Here are three albums filled with photos from the three cameras: - iPhone 14 Pro: adobe.ly/3TC2bJ7 - Pixel 7 Pro: adobe.ly/3hrF3j4 - S22 Ultra: adobe.ly/3DNTOUP What camera do you think is the best?
It was disrespectful not to show or give any interest to the pixel 7 pro's camera comparison in portrait, video and main lens for the rest of the video. In my conclusion you were biased as you failed to give examples for the viewer to decide and make that call for themselfs. Becca, next time dont just take out a smartphone in the middle of a comparison video because of your bias decisions, in doing so you lose credibility as it was not a fair comparison of the other features not shown.
yes, the s22 ultra is the winner, 3x and 10x zoom, best selfie and great pro mode. i bought the pixel 7 pro and im very happy with it, it may not be as consistent as the competition but i love the looks of the pictures
The greatest comparison on each phone for this great pictures. Comparing so many pictures I'm sure was not easy. PLEASE!!! DO THIS EVERY YEAR. WE ALL LOVE IT!!!
Wait, so just because you didn't prefer the color science and the style of photos that the Pixel takes for it's main wide camera You just removed it entirely from showing us the sample photos? Instead of letting the audience decide what they like out of the three? Photography is up to the users preference, i understand and respect you don't like Pixels photos but you should as a reviewer leave it up to your viewers to decide what they think
@Jeffry Chen She is inconsistent in the comparisons. She throws out the Pixel for inconsistent "system choices" and then goes on to praise everything about the S22 Ultra's manual calibrations in pro mode. She never once mentions the pro mode in the Pixel or that you can get way more out of the iPhone camera with a 3rd party app. Just a poor ending to the test.
dont be so harsh. most probably there is another reason. the lens was scratched or something and there was no way getting a ne one before the deadline 😁
@Jeffry Chen but later in the video, she also said the Samsung was unpredictable in what the photo will look like. That's just the same as the Pixel 7 Pro not being consistent. She negates said unpredictability with the Samsung having the best portrait mode. By that same logic, you could negate the colour science of the Pixel for having the best Astrophotography mode or motion blur or the ability to unblur photos which is great for taking pictures of kids.
@Jeffry Chen that doesn't explain why she completely removed the pixel which has a pro mode but praised the pro mode on the Samsung. It's still a bad ending to an otherwise good review
@@felipe367 So that users pay for them then Apple takes their 30% cut (since Devs have no other choice than to post on Apple's Appstore) when they could have had it for free if it was first party.
I'm a huge fan of phone tech and phone comparison videos and this was my first watching one of Becca's videos. Amazing job and love the style and pace of this video! I'll have a new place to look for phone reviews and comparisons now. Keep up the great work and thanks for making these!
The Pixel 7 Pro is improving every month with every software update. It has a dedicated section of the Tensor 2 SoC for photography, so Google keeps on improving the cameras step by step...
...buuut you should never buy something based on the promise that it'll get better later. Source: Pixel 7 Pro owner :') Edit to add: former Nexus 5, 6, Pixel 1, 2XL, 4XL, 6 Pro owner as well, I'm not a hater lol
@@jm-alan No, you should buy something based on the fact that it currently does 95% of the stuff as well as phones twice as expensive. Source: regular Pixel 7 owner.
I like the Pixel photos better than Samsung, and in most cases better than iPhone. Idk what she's talking about with the Pixel being behind Samsung and iPhone when it comes to the main camera sensor. I could see maybe PREFERRING the iPhone, but if anything Samsung is behind unless it's in regard to the telephoto in daylight. I think iPhone is great too but it tends to over-expose especially in low light. They're all great cameras, but Pixel still looks the best imo. Every time I'm at a party or something take some photos, people ask me to use my phone instead of theirs. And they own Samsungs and iPhones for the most part. Not too many Pixel owners out there but they all love the camera.
I am surprised that iPhone had the best highlights on the ultra-wide, didn't see much difference in the clouds, but the photo at 1:09 under the bridge has blown out sky on the iPhone.
Great video, and it just shows you can't go wrong with any of these choices these days. But like you mention, samsung kills it with the zoom, which is what keeps me with them year after year. If you're on a plane, the kinds of pictures you can take while flying over a city is insane.
Thanks Becca, you have done an amazing analysis of the three smartphones. I think the S22 Ultra is worth the price, specially with all the Black Friday deals.
@@TheCrafter8837 I have always been an Android user. I had the PIxel 3 which. Really loved. Now I have the S20FE and the S22 Ultra, great phones with best camera features. Way more flexible than an IPhone. My wife had an iPhone 6 a long time back but she also switched to a Samsung A50 device. I hope you are happy with your new device.
I agree that the winner is the S22 Ultra, but not because of the “pro-mode” which can be easily achieved on any iPhone with a third-party app (with more features than Samsung’s native camera app) but because of that amazing portrait mode and the tele-photo lens. Writing this comment on my iPhone 14 Pro.
Thank you so much, Becca 🤗 I've using the S22 Ultra for a while and still discovering new features when it comes to the camera. The most thing I like about this phone is that I can capture any thing at any time from the ants to the moon😅
Thanks bud for putting in the time and effort to make this! I think some of the night telephoto photos on the S22 Ultra are blurry/pixelated cause it's not choosing to use the 10X zoom lens but choosing to use the wide lens and digitally zoom, it's a common issue that's sometimes frustrating for me. You will have to use Pro mode to force it to use the correct lens.
Not anymore, with one ui 5 there's a new goodlock module camera assistant that allows you to disable lens switching amongst other things and it's a very welcome option.
@Benjamin Jagun to each.... facts are facts finding the facts is what some struggle with but what your comfortable with regardless of price is what matters
Yes I agree with the "I Can't Believe I took that on my phone" with my S22+ because I use a Canon 80D and a S22+ and the portrait mode is so, So fine, It baffles me.
I think she was biased towards the pixel 7 pro and I will choose the 7pro over the pro max and the ultra any day when it comes to pictures and and the pro max when it comes to videos
Great video, slightly disappointed you didn’t address shutter lag, which seems to be the S22U’s downfall, unless it’s been addressed in a recent update.
@@techr1320 i agree with you but tbh the shutter lag has been reduced a lot in one ui 5 it's not as good as other phones but it's still better than what it was
Congratulations ! Such an amazing detailed informative hight quality honest review !!!!! I agree that S22 Ultra is the king, the most features rich tool, the complete package ! As far about night shots on 10x of S22 Ultra, you should show us the other 2 phones what kind of images are produced on 10x even digitaly ! Again, it was an amazing review ! You deserve million more subscribers !
@@SAM-os9zyI have an s22 ultra, and I absolutely love it I also have an iPhone 14 pro, what I would say since it’s right around the corner, wait for the s23 ultra I think it is going to be an incredible device especially with its new 8 Gen 2 and it’s much better battery efficiency. But yea I would rank the s22 ultra over my iPhone almost any day with a few exceptions
So let me get this straight. You advertise this video as a 3 way comparison between the pixel 7 pro, iPhone 14 pro and s22 ultra but then remove the pixel 7 pro from important categories like main lens and video just because you didn't like some of the photos the pixel took? How on earth does that make sense? That's not a fair comparison at all. Why not give the viewers the full information and allow them to make their decision.
You are literally the only person I've seen review the 7 Pro and say that the main cam isn't even good enough to compare to the 14 Pro S22 Ultra. I came for a full in-depth review and got a half-baked one.
@@Wander_Ventures The Verge journalist/director that took the time to create this phenomenal piece of work to share with us.... her name is in the credits. LOL
Great video. I had Lg V10 and V20 and been missing the pro mode so you can control everything manually. I went to Iphone 11 a year ago and was a bad decision, for photos it's ok but not great specially at night.. I'm between Iphone 14 pro and S22. I will pick probably S22 Ultra for the same reasons you mentioned at the end. Thanks
@@msnoteyirmi3331 me personally, having all of them I'll say the iPhone is the most reliable because of the best video and Social media. But taking pictures using the stock camera app, the Pixel doesn't have competition
So the Korean soap factory and apples face-turned pancakes are better than pixel just because you, guys, disliked the colors on the main lens, didn't over process the selfie and showed REAL deep and natural HDR? Verge as always is the same as other e-magazines.
I’m lucky enough to carry both a S22 Ultra and 14 Pro max. If I’m taking a still in good light, nothing beats the S 22, but if I’m shooting video, it’s the iPhone every time
Sad that I came here to see how my new Pixel 7 Pro compared to these other two top performers, and only stuck around for half the video. Great work, even if it fell short for me.
This is an opinion video. I think Pixel and iPhone are the best with Samsung a close 3rd place. I prefer the Pixel photos, and she is TRIPPIN when she says Pixel falls behind the other two. Every time I take photos somewhere with other people they talk about how great they are and ask me to take photos with my Pixel. And these people are largely Samsung and iPhone users.
I wasn't expecting this conclusion. When I had my S22 Ultra, regardless of the lens I used, I found the images to be noisy with crushed shadows, blown highlights and over processing leading to artifacts and over saturation. I've found my Pixel 7 Pro to be far more consistent with more natural colours, less noise and better balanced dynamic range across its cameras. Very good flexibility in its RAW files too.
camerea on phones especially at this level there so close I have s22 ultra from day 1 it has definitely gotten better with updates but what I think looks really I like a little over saturation.. u might not had iPhone 13 pro max great camera 2 some shots better then s22 ultra.. people felling bad pixel didn't win.. if u like it what does it matter 10 years from now u will be looking at them.. there are no losers
Fiance is switching over to the Samsung galaxy s23 ultra when it comes out. She's only had an iPhone all her life and she does photography as a hobby/passion. I've been a Samsung user all my life, but I'm not really a "pro" photographer like her. I switched to the fold 4, after being a "Note" user for so long, but I hope she likes her switch. Thanks for this informative video!
In the past week, I think I've watched about forty videos compare Pixel 7 Pro, S22 Ultra, and iPhone 13/14Pro Cameras. As a photographer choosing a cell phone that can take good pictures, this video is my favorite. Simple, direct, and honest. So, thank you!
I agreed with most points aside from the s22 ultra being unpredictable. Maybe it's a use by use thing, but my friend and I are both phone nerds and he got the 14 pro max. We took around 250 pics each (we tried to get the same frame and shot) when we went on a hike to Bear mountain last week. Needless to say, him and I both agreed that the 14 pm is more unpredictable than the s22 ultra mainly due to HDR issues on the iPhone. In fact, I only had a handful of photos that came out funky and this was due to some weird sharpening issue that started happening with my phone on Android 13
So is iphone 14 pro a bad choice? I am also a nerd and i was just about to buy the 14 pro as i wanna try the ecosystem being an android user since ages.
Becca is a proven professional camera editor - shooting over 1000 photos with 3 Phones and finished the editing to render this quality comparison video. - speechless. My love for Pixel 7 Pro keeps trying to stop me from believing it's not as good as the S22 Ultra. But Becca is right - the versatile camera system from S22U is truly a masterpiece that's worth the throne.
Fantastic review! But, in reality, no one watching this review will ever notice enough of a difference (if any at all) to make this aspect a deciding factor. I current own a P7P, but have owned them all (prev models) and can honestly say, they're all phenomenal everyday cameras. Imho, the OS of each is the biggest difference and that (FOR ME...) is much more of a reason to purchase one over the others..
Nice comparison thanks but which turns quickly between the iPhone and the S22U only (lost the Pixel in the meantime?). Personally I used an S22U (Exynos) at the same time as the Pixel 6 Pro and also the 7 Pro and overall the Pixels have better image quality in my experience. The iPhone I don't know, I don't use that
S22 Ultra really nails it but I guess Pixel catches up really fast. About the iPhone, as long as they are stingy for using latest hardware in their phones, I don't think they'll be able to outpace the competition.
So interesting to see how much opinions differ. I'm about to buy a new phone and your review was comparing exactly these phones that are in my list of phones to select. Very most of my pictures I take during daylight, hardly I use the front camera and I don't use videos a lot. And with taking photos from the main cameras on the back during dayime in my opinion the winner couldn't be any more obvious than the Google Pixel 7 Pro from what I have seen in your review. Especially with high contrast pictures, which most pictures are when taking them outdoors, it looks most natural, kind of what the human eye would see, where the iPhone makes dark areas far too dark and the Samsung looses colors in brighter areas. The perfect example is the picture at 1:08 where the iPhone renders the lower part of the sky white and the Samsung keeps it all an unnatrual constant blue and at the same time making the trees far too bright where with the Google the whole scene gives details without looking too artificial - basiclaly coming very close to what my eye would see. Unfortunately the main part of your review was focusing a lot more on Samsung/iPhone and the Google came quite short. So I would have loved to see that in the main compare, too. Anyway, your review makes it a lot easier for me to make a selection - most likely it will be the Pixel 7 Pro. Thank you!
Wow ! FANTASTIC camera comparison and a truly unbiased Verdict. Super Proud of you for carrying the The Verge's great legacy ! Kudos to you ! Keep up the Good work ⚡️👍🏼
My gosh you are soo bias Pixel 7pro in most of the pictures is wayyyyy better than the other two... anyways,i guess you have to learn a lot about photography. Would have been better if were the followers, without knowing which phone was talking which picture,to choose they preferred. Mmmh , honestly this could have been a much better video if it was a bit more honest
But we should mention that the RAW-Photos on the iPhone 14 Pro look so much better than normal 12MP-JPG. I was shocked how much detail the Raw images have.
Apple need to give users a proper pro mode. They've been using the Pro moniker for the past 4 years of iPhones yet the only difference is the addition of a lens from its amateur counterpart. As you said, the result you get from the RAW look so much better but so few people are even going to see the benefit.
Sadly... reality kicks in. Comparing smartphone shots even the top of the line is only very important for reviewers and enthusiasts 'cause the rest of world just couldn't or wouldn't be able to distinguish differences shots made by a midrange or flagship smartphone. Reviews like these be like "look at the super sharpening going on, look how the machine learning boost this shot, did you notice the artifacts on the image' Sure a lot of people would praise a shot taken by a Galaxy, a Pixel, a Xiaomi or Apple device but then they continue with their life, choose the midrange one, shot a photo, apply a filter or edit and then upload it. Camera on midrange and flagship has small negligible differences as years went by and only reviewers are looking for different tiny details from one shot to another. Comparing shots in the upcoming years will be harder for reviewers while majority of the buyers would just be happy with the shot they've taken.
Disapointed you completely neglected the S22's 3x camera for the telephoto at night comparison. Would've been good to see like for like shots vs the other two phones in low light.
I didn’t click on this video because I’m into cameras. I clicked on it cause I am a fan of Becca. Although I miss Dieter, I do have to admit that the team is thriving! New branding, awesome personalities , and great focus on production quality. I dare say that the verge is better than ever. Also, I have been listening to the Vergecast for a few years now, and the format tweaks are fun. I love getting an extra show where David is just chilling at the stuffing aisle. Overall, the verge retains its 10/10 rating in my mind.
As an S22 Ultra user I found out that the 10x low light zoom shots in this video is a cropped 3x not actually captured by the 10x lens. If it would have used the f/4.9m 10x lens it would have been much darker and clearer than the 3x cropped photo shown in the video. Should have enabled force lens switching using camera assistant in goodlock.
It felt pretty biased towards the Samsung S22 ULTRA, I have used both the pixel and S22 ultra and can say that S22 ultra doesn't come even close the pixel in images from the wide angle lens.
@Benjamin Jagun Exactly bro. The Samsung 8k is not worth using at all. And I totally agree iphone has the best video for a smartphone but the still images are best of Google and their post processing is just out of the world given their hardware.
I'm a pixel fan, but sadly it's not . I own a pixel and an iphone. I find the iphone more consistent ( I own a DSLR and mirror less camera too) the pixel lifts the shadows too much, plus under exposes photos on bright, sunny days. Pixel Photos look like they've been badly edited in Lightroom or photo shop
woo, s22 ultra. though for night time i use the pro mode for videos and photos to get the best result but sadly neglect the portrait mode too much. other than that, great review
She forgot to mention that galaxy s22 ultra can’t really shoot the full 108 megapixel even in raw mode while the iPhone can actually shoot full 48 megapixel in raw but honestly you can’t go wrong with either iPhone or samsung
Next time can you compare these cameras with a DSLR or a mirrorless camera with different lenses (ultra wide, regular and telephoto) package that costs similar to these phones?
I own a sony a7c and love to shoot with it. However in a hurry I love the images and videos from my s22ultra. And I’ve been with iphone 13 so I know that samsung chooses to be a little bit on the dramatic (read, slightly oversaturated) side but that’s just how I want my images and videos to be. Love it!
I really appreciate that you made a video that is somehow different than any other camera comparison I've seen. And to be clear, I watch a lot! I own an S22 Ultra, and consistently wow my friends and family with my photographs. This is despite being a visually impaired person! So I definitely agree with your conclusion!
Fantastic Video. I'm an iPhone 14 Pro user, and the S22 Ultra camera system looks incredible and the clear winner, but unlike the iPhone it does mean carrying around a massive phone. Would I go Pro Max if it had a similar telephoto system though...hell yes.
Still biased on the Google's Pixel 7 Pro but I can appreciate both the iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung cameras. However, I'm hoping you have Sony's A7R V in the works. Great stuff as always
Photos from recent iPhones (12+) are also very unpredictable when you shoot people in contrasty light. iPhone brightens up faces so that they look as if they were pasted in. I am really disappointed after upgrading from iPhone X.
thank you for the great review...but was the color inconsistency of the pixels main camera a serious reason to just knock it off the competition? What about the clarity, details, night photos, portrait mode, 4k video?
I’m IPhone 14 pro user but completely agree, I prefer iPhone 14 pro for handling and ecosystem but 10x optical zoom is really fun and useful for artistic photography, I’m jealous
Wait, you throw out the Pixel 7 pro's main camera because of the systems choices and then you praise the S22 Ultra for its manual pro mode?!?!?! All of these phones have pro mode (iPhone with an app). You basically ruined an otherwise really good comparison.
This was an excellent review! Man, there are some rubbish ones out there and you totally nailed it. It helped that your photographs were varied and well-composed. Excellent work. I'm away to get the Ultra! Thanks for making my mind up.
Great job on the comparisons! Seems like a lot of thought and effort was put into the review. Some things that may be good to include/look at in the review are the settings that the phones offer to adjust how it focuses or processes the image (Samsung for instance uses a "scene optimizer" that adjusts colors based on what the user is taking a picture of). Another thing that kind of helps address almost all of the downfalls with the S22U is Samsung's Expert Raw app, which does a much better job at removing/reducing grain and gives an overall better quality image (and as of right now just improved the lag, and added new modes for exposure and long exposures of stars). While I myself own the S22U and will praise it for days, I want to mention that I have a family member who also has an iPhone 14 and what I love about the phone is what you can get out of it (especially with subjects) for essentially no thinking.
My previous phone was s21ultra and I love it! Now loving my current Fold 4 , but to be honest obviously the Ultra series does wonder on camera shooting💞
Personally I prefer the photo-video software processing of the S21 Ultra to that of the S22 Ultra, the S21 Ultra is really very natural, super balanced in terms of colors and HDR, it is not afraid to burn certain parts of the scene to highlight the main subject, much like a real professional camera.
@@rolins3279Yep I have the same opinion! Been using it for a year now and overall photos are really natural, especially selfies. The only situations when the hdr goes crazy is during sunsets (with the horrible light flares) and when there is a lot of grass.
Fantastic video Becca. The shots I took recently in London with the s22u were mid blowing in so many light instances. The 3x shots were just perfect. Interesting you compared the night video using the 8k wrongly. You really should have had 4K on each, no?
This was a great video! Love Becca, love the Verge. My S22+ camera is so good I'm not surprised the the Ultra came out on top. Samsung camera used to be a JOKE, they have come so far since 2019 S10 it's about time
This is the most professional break down I've watched, great stuff. Apple has been playing catch up to Samsung in the Camera features for at least 10 yrs now . Galaxy S23 ultra rolls out in Feb 2023 w 200mp
Is this your opinion/conjecture, or did you look through the attached photos? The Pixel got knocked out immediately on still photos with its standard wide lens.
Strange that by far, more professional photographers prefer the Pixel 7 Pro over the other phones. Not a fan of the Pixel line at all since I carry a small Z Flip 3, but it's strange that you would call the S22 out as best.
Hey Becca, one thing which I have seen on Samsung flagships since s20 ultra came out is that when taking night shots, sometimes the higher telephoto camera won’t be activated because of lower aperture size. Shifting to night mode sometimes reduces the probability of this happening. I would request you to try this yourself. There is a subtle, up visible difference on longer telephoto lenses when the software actually makes the switch between lenses. Another aspect to this is the focal distance. More often than not, the closer objects use digital zoom from a lower telephoto than optical zoom at higher telephoto. In my experience, the longer telephoto almost always produces a better image. Not sure why Samsung does this.
