Oooof moments like that one are important in showing just how delicate microsoldering is. Just a tiny bit of debris can make a repair worthless if you miss it.

Well, I can't blame you. With freight forwarding and transporting [truck driving], a whole lot of it is repetitive, and even still I occasionally miss that one thing that can come back and bite me on the ass. Like a missed ABS cable, or even a trailer door. Thankfully that's far and few between, but I know that oooof feeling when I kick myself for having missed it. @@ststele

It would be interesting to see how components like this get soldered in the factory with the high melt.
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
I often wonder this exact same thing! For some boards I can come up with ideas that would make it fail-safe for them but others have melting points all over the place that are very, very close in temperature. I'm sure they have a specific order to lessen defects though.

I love your immediate criticism of this new design. I had the same thought about the battery when I first saw the change for design rework for these. Even Apple's manual seems to skip over battery disconnection for repairs. Even if there's no voltage to the connector, it just makes me feel wrong. Glad to see you back around. I miss your frank humanity when you're not uploading. I think it's a needed force in these kinds of videos.
@ststele

I am hoping that the risk of leaving the battery connected on this model may be minimal but it certainly feels wrong with the way things have been on previous models! Sorry for the extended down-time. I'm really glad to see you're still here. Thank you for watching and commenting! 😊

I replaced a iphone 14 screen in the shop and fell into 'the trap'. Removed the screen and thought crap, the battery connects in the back!, I didn't want to risk breaking the back glass so completed the repair. Luckily it booted with no problems. Doesn't mean I'll be confident next time. I've been practicing removing and fitting screen connectors on old boards at home. Going well with no issues. Might try the solder build up and flow method. Always concerned about having enough solder.
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
I still have some hope that on this model it may not be *too* risky to keep the battery hooked up. During the iPhone 3~5 days, it was common to see screen replacements on the 3's and 5's without disconnecting the battery. They often needed a hard restart afterwards but damaging the board from keeping the battery hooked up was not common.

Nice job Jason! Quick question: have you ever changed your heating element on 861DW?
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
Hey, thanks! I haven't had any trouble with the heating element yet. Still on my first 861DW with the original element. I've been a little worried about it one day going out and then having to spend the time calibrating / re-adjusting my temperatures after fixing it. Even the slightest bit of change makes a big difference. It's still going strong though.

Nice one Jason! I love the quality of your microscope camera - what is it?
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! This was one of the cheapest cameras I could find after my old camera died early this year. I've been beating myself up over the quality and wishing I had bought a better camera. I'm glad it's not *too* blurry to see what is going on. I will try to run it on HDMI instead of USB before upgrading. These low-end cameras differ inside from unit to unit and have many different brand names. Here is one like it in the US: amzn.to/2Ckxiot I am using this one from Aliexpress (have to click the camera after opening the link or it's only the ring light!): www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803570931911.html They look the same outside but inside they are totally different. My old camera had a *much* larger sensor! I plan to upgrade soon.

Jason, I wonder why you used the soldering iron instead of using the hot gun to lift and solder the connector
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
Only to be extra careful. With this being a multi-part sandwich board, I did not want to accidentally disrupt the sandwich solder joints. I would have needed to reball the whole sandwich if that had happened. I switched to using hot air for soldering only after replacing the medium/high temperature solder so that I could use lower temps and have almost no risk of floating the sandwich on accident.
@kokodin5895
@kokodin5895 7 месяцев назад
for a job like that would lower melting solder paste be any good?
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
It works good for removing but would be too brittle for soldering the new connector on. It breaks very easy during screen replacements. At least all of the alloys I have at hand would!
@seapeddler
@seapeddler 7 месяцев назад
What is needed is smart solder. Engineers should exploit and modify the dendrite formation of some crystals. A smart solder is applied, electricity is passed through it, and the little nanites hook up like velcro. No heat required. It is hard to believe that the CERN installation is likely just a prototype and actually tiny, in the minds of those physicists.

Amazing camera quality What is the black stuff around the connector ? Can I remove it before dealing with connector ?
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
Thanks :) Yes, I used to remove this stuff to keep solder from squeezing out when it expands. It's ok to remove. I don't know what the proper term is but I call it "over fill". Apple uses different types of this glue on various models in different places. Thanks for the camera compliment. I was really beating myself up over the quality actually and feeling a need to upgrade. I just can't get it the clarity my previous camera had.

great Job. got a Question I have a 2020 SE and would like to replace the front camera will it take a new one without problems?
@ststele
@ststele 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! The 2020 SE shouldn't give you any trouble to replace the front camera. If the camera doesn't work afterwards, updating / re-flashing iOS should fix it. I've had that happen on iPhone X models --- may have been Xs? I don't think that SE will have any trouble though. It should just work!
