My phone usage habits have not changed in the last 5 years. In 2018 I purchased a XS Max. After two years of hard usage and multiple vacations my battery percentage was at 90 percent. I passed this phone down to my mom and the battery is still at 84 percent after 5 years. iPhone 12 Pro Max was purchased in 2020. After heavy usage and multiple vacations in 2021, the phone was at 98 percent after 1 year. My dad is using the phone now and it’s still at 89 percent after 3 years. In 2021 I purchased a 13 Pro Max and after 1 year I was at 96 percent. My sister is currently using this phone at it’s still at 90 percent after 2 years. My 14 Pro Max was purchased in November of 2022. It has been 10 months and my phone is at 92 percent. From the first day of getting this phone I noticed a huge battery hit and first time ever I had to top off a charge my phone during the day. There is something wrong here.

I’d say it’s impossible to measure how much you use a phone over a 5 year period. More likely it has changed over 5 years than not. Covid alone forced people to be on their phone and screens more. You can’t say it was the same even in 2019 let alone 2018

I got my iPhone 14 Pro Max on release day last year and my battery health is at 100%. I charge it up mostly using the Belkin 3-in-1 MagSafe charger when I wake up in the morning. Still using my iPhone X, and it’s at 77% battery capacity. I know how to manage the batter well enough that I don’t need to use a batter pack on my travels. It’s got another two years of life in my opinion. But I will be getting the iPhone 15, whichever version has the best camera, screen, and battery capacity. I was hoping for a foldable iPhone this year but I don’t think Apple will do that until 2025.

29th of November 2019, dropped to 96% within the first 5 months and I have a recorded case on it. They said that the usage of the owner also is a factor in the equation calculating the % of battery health. Finally, it is now at 74% with a significant stutter once reaching below 10%. Unfortunately I would have to pay twice the price Apple asks just because the place I live in has a lot of tariffs and custom duties on spare parts for electronics especially where an iPhone is a niche product here.

I use Siri Shortcuts and have it alert me with a sound and a flash when recharging hits 80% charge then I unplug. I suspect this battery will last a good long time using this method. Hopefully at some point some new battery tech will come along and make all these worries obsolete. Until then just replace your battery every now and then. I took care of the iPhone 13 Pro Max battery very well. Almost never charged over 80% expect for “calibration “, which didn’t work. The capacity slowly go from 98 to 92, and stayed there for a long time. Then suddenly it went from 92 to (you guess what) 88% in less than a month. Then stayed there till now. It’s either bad programming or based on other factors totally other than the actual capacity.

Batteries are not created equal. My iPhone 13 Pro has a 3,095 mAh battery. That is a minimum. Some are exactly that, some have more but none have less. If you are lucky enough to get one with more it will take a lot longer for your battery health to drop below 100%. If your battery is larger than 3,095 mAh Apple still display that as 100% health as 107% would look messy and confuse people. My iPhone was at 100% for 8 months and then dropped the usually 1% a month from then on. I think this is the biggest differentiator, not usage (although that does effect it). I never hear anyone mention this.

I think it's the software. I have an iphone SE and ever since ios 16.6 I've noticed after an update, my battery will drain around 8% per hour and that'll last for 2 or 3 days and go back to normal. But recently I've noticed these periods happen when there's not an update. During those draining periods, if I put in in airplane mode overnight, it'll only drain 1% per 8 hours! But once I connect to wifi and cellular, the 8% drain continues only to return to normal after 2 or 3 days. The overall health dropped 2% since 16.6 over the span of about 3 months. So I'm not experiencing a dramatic health drop, but rather these annoying random draining periods.

Idk how you could use the whole battery in a day I have a standard 14 and I just can’t also it’s not that deep people ask for so many features that the phone will use a lot of power which means more charge cycles and a warmer phone it also doesn’t help that so many people put their phone in a case instead of just holding it

Wooooohoooooo.... mine is iPhone 12 from more 25 months ago and it's at 88% battery health. I've been working at home since 2020 lockdown, and it's on Wi-Fi most the time except when I travel but that's about 5% of the time. I charge it whenever I can, meaning, even if it's at 99%, if I am close to a charger, it's charging. I don't subject the phone to any extreme heat or cold temperature, it's almost always at room temperature except when I am driving and it's in the car giving me directions AND charging. My conclusion, charge your phone as often as you'd like and those power banks would just be "one more thing" you need not to carry with you all the time. ;)

I’ve got the 12 pro max… at 85% health… I usually charge it in the morning before I go to work as opposed to letting it charge over night… I head out to work with 100% charge and may use it to text, check for things online..watch videos on my lunch.. then the last 2-3 hours of my shift I’ll have Spotify on until I’m off.. by the time I get home my battery percentage would vary between 50%-70%, I try to close all apps and try to remember to turn off the Wi-Fi… don’t want my phone constantly scanning.. percentage has been higher on nights I don’t have Spotify playing in the background as I work..

As a long term iPhone user, the key to handing down old phones with a good battery is to condition the battery off and on. Never let the phone run on battery 🪫 to below 20%… because that reaches a cycle. Also the network has nothing to do with it it’s all about range and signal strength. The battery will last as long as 5 years or more if you understand that your battery is like your heart it paces it’s useable range within 100% and 45% that means it’s best to keep it at its top capacity. What happens when your heart reaches into the red? Just be careful and try to be near a energy source the current phone tech we use is based in a model of transferring cost and reducing energy, otherwise our phones would last ten years and cost 10,000 dollars. Hope that helps.

Great video as usual Bridget. It must be mentioned also that iPhone 13 Pro Max phones seem to be holding their charge very well. It's the iPhone 14 SERIES that is showing UNUSUALLY FAST DEGRADATION.

I have a 13 Pro Max and I've had it since day one and my battery life is at 86%. My wife has a regular 13 and hers has dropped from 90% to 85% in the last 60 days which is very curious. She does go through more battery in her day and she does charge it overnight whereas I've stopped charging overnight and started charging during the day to only 80%. So either way, after about 2 years I think our battery life is pretty solid.

Launch day iPhone 14 Pro Max, currently has 248 cycles, at 101.3% health. I only charge from 40% and stop at 75% sometimes 80%. AOD is always on, though without background on. Never wirelessly charge only through lightening. Also never charged while using it for anything demanding. I could just be lucky with my battery. For context, my old iPhone XS Max, which I gave to my mother is charged to 100% daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Battery is down to 87% with 820 some cycles. Really good overall! The only thing I can think of is HEAT! That must be a real killer.

I have been using an IPhone XS Max for the past few years. My phone is still at 82%. The battery life started bothering me after the IOS 17 update and because I am changing it for a 15 Pro Max, I just leave it plugged in night and day. The reason that I do that is that I do elder care at night and work during the day at another job and even if I top it off before going to eldercare, it will be in low power mode by morning nowadays, and starting the day in low power mode sucks and going to elder care in low power mode also sucks. When my 15 Pro Max comes in, I will be shutting off always on display and everything else that causes battery to die faster because THAT is the only stressful thing.
