Apple has tentatively agreed to settle the iPhone BatteryGate class-action lawsuit in the U.S. to the tune of $500 million dollars. This follows a €25 million fine last month.
So, how did this all go so wrong for Apple… and why?

So I worked for Apple during this time. Not only did they not tell the customers what was happening, they didn't tell their genius bars. I swapped many devices for slow down issues because our diagnostics said everything was fine and the battery was ok. It was later that we found out that our engineers knew then that a battery would fix slow downs, but never told us nor did they update the diagnostic software to let us know the battery was faulty.

I can second this. I was an AppleCare Advisor (call center) before this got big, but we began seeing the first hints of it just before I left. Those of us who were a little more savvy than average figured it must've been a battery issue though none of us knew for-sure because we weren't being told it was & we had no guidance to treat these scenarios in a special way.

Both my sibling and I had the shut down issue during winter a few years back with our iPhone 6 Plus’s. It seemed to happen in the cold, because that’s when the shutdowns occurred for us. It got to the point where whenever we went outside, he resorted to keeping his phone as close to his body as possible, and I turned on my battery case, even if my phone was pretty well charged. I remember reading the articles about the shutdown complaints, and realising that my family and I were part of that group with the issue. That’s why when it came out that Apple applied throttling to phones with degraded batteries, I wasn’t surprised. If anything, it explained why my phone wasn’t shutting down as nearly as much. Though, it also explained why my phone would become terribly slow a minute or two before shutting down, meaning I had to turn on my battery case right then and there. Did it suck that Apple didn’t be more transparent about their fix? Of course, they should’ve let people know what was happening. But the people who decided to immediately start saying that their fix was “planned obsolescence in action” had no idea what they were talking about. I know what it was like to have to worry about my phone shutting down whenever I stepped outside for more than 30 seconds, along with the relief, the difference it made to take advantage of Apple’s $30 battery replacement programme. Thank you for covering this issue Rene, because what really happened needs to reach more people.

This also happened to the Note 4 which is why it was fined in Italy too. But of course no one talks about that even though Samsung came out throwing  under the bus. Even lied about it “We don’t throttle our phones” which is something that Apple didn’t do

My only issue with Rene's (and Apple's) argument is why did Apple slow EVERYTHING down? They could have just slowed down the power intensive tasks to prevent the phone from shutting down. I think they came to the decision to slow down phones with good intentions but then realized that slowing down all processes would generate more $$$ than just slowing down the power intensive tasks.

A 6s Plus user here. I’m sure others had actual performance issues but when this was all happening, I kept my phone in low power mode which, amongst other things, cut the processor frequency in half. And yet I didn’t notice a change in performance. Might be different on a 6 Plus...otherwise, how dead would the battery have to be to cause a 60-90% decrease? Was the performance management itself buggy for some? I know sometimes people have had to restore an iPhone to make it not slow due to some bugs in the OS.

Thanks Rene. It's always fun to watch your show. I used to work with General Motors. They use "PPM", problem per million, different from well-known unit ppm. 1 PPM means 1 problem in 1 million. In another word, 0.0001% . General Motors treats it still a warning. But if it comes to 5 PPM, it's a big problem. They even consider a recall if it's over 10 PPM. I believe Apple does the same way. They may set higher standards than General Motors. I'm using iPhone XS Max, 6th-gen iPad and 2018 15" MacBook Pro. And I develop iPhone/iPad apps. I am basically OK with my current Apple devices but I noticed the signal reception of iPhone XS Max is not as good as iPhone 6S. Wifi is same. I am living in the Seattle WA area and was working next building from T-mobile (BTW, my iPhone is with AT&T). Some of my coworkers had T-mobile iPhones but same. I think it is caused by Intel chip. I want to see Intel vs QualCom comparison. I was traumatized by the videos about thermal throttling issue on the MacBook Pro. As soon as I launch VirtualBox, the temperature goes up to 100 degrees Celsius instantly and then throttle. I'm not happy about it and hopefully I can switch to 16" MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM soon. My MacBook Pro at my work was 2019 15" MacBook Pro with Vega graphics and 32GB of RAM (not 16" model). But it caused tons of problems almost everyday and I was discouraged. Part of the reasons may be the security software installed by the company IT guys. I hope Apple would not go with their chip for MacBook Pro. I need to use Windows sometimes, too. Please let everyone know if Apple would choose such wrong direction. Thanks, Carl

How about they said SAME THING for iPad Pro 1st Gen, LAST YEAR? Seriously, if other tablets weren’t so shit, I would’ve switched to Android. I’m not supporting this. At all. I don’t care how well you explain it. I replaced the battery in my iPhone 6s and chose not to use the fix they added to the software to slow the battery down once it starts aging. That phone still works great. Other than having to charge it more often, it’s still really fast. This was very deceptive of Apple. At the very least, they should have given a short explanation as to what was going on and why, as you said towards the end of the video. But they saw their shares increase and the money rolling in from the sales of new devices and became greedy. If they weren’t caught,  still would have been doing this and getting away with it.

Good info 👍... Yep Apple messed up when it came to informing people what the problem really was. Apple gave in to the temptation of not letting any negative info out which looked like a cover-up whereas if they had been upfront with what was going Apple would have looked like a company solving a problem. Apple did fix the problem but instead of looking like the company that cared they ended up looking like a company that was forced to fix the problem.

I’m still a firm believer this: Apple will screw the previous iPhone (previous year) such as say the iPhone 11 Pro Max from 2019 if you update from iOS 13 to iOS 14 and will make the iPhone 12 pro or pro max (whatever it be call) to make it seem worse and the iPhone 12 pro max to seem better. I have graphs showing my iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 11 day before I updated to iOS 12 and my battery worsened by a lot. Worse part is Apple doesn’t let you downgrade your iPhone to older iOS. I am staying on the old iOS my 11 pro max is on. They don’t add much features and security is fine (better than android I’m sure). Believe what you want, but I’m not sacrificing battery life for more emoji crap
@DillWijay

Aren't you giving Apple too much benefit of the doubt when you say they didn't mean to throttle such a wide array of tasks? I think their developers are smart enough to be able to throttle only the necessary tasks (but they didn't). To me, it looks like Apple was trying to pull a fast one on uneducated customers and got caught red-handed. It's just, not all customers are well informed, so Apple was able to use cover up stories like the ones they gave to you and other people in the tech industry ("we didn't mean to throttle everything", "it was for the benefit of customers", etc)

If that’s the case the phone goes into serious crazy mode looking for other networks and this kills the battery. I have some areas like this in my life. I agree that in many instances, corporate interests conflict with consumer interest but in some cases, they tend to coincidentally align.
