Two Apple experts explain what to do when your iPhone screen is dark.
First, try turning up the brightness on your iPhone to see if that makes any difference.
If it doesn’t, there’s a decent chance that one of the iPhone Accessibility settings has been configured in a way that makes the screen darker than usual. Make sure Reduce White Point and Zoom are both turned off.
If your iPhone screen is still too dark, Reset All Settings. Instead of tracking down the specific software problem, this will just reset everything!
The last step you can do before ruling out a software problem is a DFU restore, the deepest iPhone restore. It’s time to consider repair options if your iPhone display is still dark.

Interesting. It sounds like something in the Settings app might be affecting your screen brightness - or it's a hardware problem. Try a Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings to eliminate the possibility of a software problem. Good luck!

I really believe that Apple does not know how to work this problem out. It is currently sunny and I cannot see my screen, so I am doing talk to text. I have the auto brightness off, because I’m not an idiot, and neither are millions of other iPhone users, but the screen gets unreadable in sunlight even with auto brightness off, zoom off, and every accessibility feature not enable. Is this Apple‘s way of doing us a favor by limiting battery usage without our permission. My screen does not go above 50% brightness even when the temperature is low, simply because it’s bright outside. I am using the iPhone pro max 13, it had the same issue with the 11. Every Apple message would I go to, I support tech replies back to adjust auto brightness. If I hear auto brightness one more time I will scream. It is not auto brightness. It is not auto brightness. It is not auto brightness. I spent $1200 on the phone and can read it when it’s sunny outside. I have to cover the screen as though I’m reading a first generation Kindle.

Okay so help, my brightness is ALL THE WAY UP, I checked all the things you said zoom, white point auto Brightness etc they’re all good, it’s so dark I can barely see it in the sun that’s why I’m here, then all of a sudden my phone decides to brighten up like just out of nowhere, then 2 minutes later it does it again so I can see everything - again bare in mind the brightens is all the way up, is my phone broke ? I got a replacement cause my phones back was cracked and I think this one is faulty

I have a brightness problem outdoors. I have an Otter Box on my iphone 7. I have the brightness turned all the way up, which does not solve the problem. I removed the Otter Box thinking that the screen protector may be the problem. It helped somewhat but I still have difficulty seeing the screen details outdoors. It happens in bright sun or overcast. It's almost like the phone specifically dims itself in outdoor light. Being a location-based gamer, this presents problems. Do you have any suggestions?

I was getting worried bc I have an iPhone 6s+ and I wouldn’t get a new phone till next year. My phone became dark in like december. And I finally had enough and searched if I can do smthn abt it. My white point thing was off so that wasn’t the problem. I didn’t even know my zoom was on so when I turned it off, my phone got broghter and literally jumped in joy

If your zoom is on and you actually use zoom. and don’t want to take it off. at the bottom of that same page there is something called “zoom filter” make sure it’s not on “Low Light” and change it to “None” that should fix it and you’ll still be able to zoom. Hope it helps

On IPad Pro 2019 “increase contrast” button in Accessibility menu is only thing that made things brighter. The screen is WAY TOO DIM when any kind of daylights hits the screen. These brightness levels are only cool if you play inside all day or you work at night.

iPhone 📱 is not for gaming. It automatically reduces brightness to 50% or 25% of maximum when it is overheating and you may not change it until it is cooled down. Don’t buy iPhone 📱for playing PUBG Mobile or other same games.

Omgosh!!! This was a game changer! I had no clue my white point was turned up to 80%! I’d finally gotten so frustrated thinking the iphone8s must be jacked bc this is my second one, just got a replacement with insurance, it STILL had the darkest display watching vids! I like you two fellows a lot. Friendly, comprehensive, easy to understand fixes for nearly everything. (I say "nearly" only because of my ignorance of many conundrums, I'm sure. Were I to run into one of them I'm confident I'd find the fix right here.) One suggestion only. In the new iPhone SE (as you already know), Apple has placed "Accessibility" outside "General," as its own category in the main menu. You can't go back and redo everything every time a new phone comes out, or Apple changes something on a whim ): But maybe going forward you can mention this for those who are easily put off when their experience doesn't e-x-a-c-t-l-y match yours.
