A few tips, carefully removing ribbon cable from battery post. The post can be pulled off motherboard, that is a common problem due to heat and age. You can get replacement posts cheap. Also remove input output cable first before disassembling cover from frame just so much easier. The click wheel and centre button, use painters tape to keep button in place for removal & installation of click wheel.
@@joseoscargonzalez7078 160 is the biggest hdd you would have to do a flash mod. Elite obsolete has great selection and you can buy from him. The iPod openers and everything. You can get the flash mod adapter from him etc. then you just need a micro sd card if any size up to 1tb but this is very important. The iPod cannot have more than 50.000 songs on it or it will crash.
I did this to my 7th gen and put 512gb on it!! It’s so 😌 that iTunes recognizes it has 512gb!! 😂 I also upgraded the battery to a 3000mA battery in which that is a helluva a lot of hours of music playback on one charge!!! 🤩🤩
Edward's Workshop Thanks 🙏 Could you help me with the front housing? I have an iPod classic 5.5g (video) and I’m considering if I can order a front housing from iPod classic 6th/7th gen? Thanks for help 🖐🏼
Hey there! Yes, the iPod classic (6th, 7th) housing should be compatible with the iPod 5.5g. For reference: www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/42750/Can+I+replace+the+front+panel+with+the+iPod+Classic+version
Bodziooo you will need a new clickwheel aswell because the 5.5 clickwheel is different, I do not know if the new clickwheel will work with the older 5.5 gen board
Thanks! I just happen to have an old iPod lying around in my drawer. I was searching aliexpress for parts and it seems that there is a thin shell and a wide shell. Which one should I purchase?
Hey there, Both shells (back panels) have specific components it can house. Essentially, the thick shell was created because of the bigger hard drive variants. If you're going to use an iflash + non upgraded battery (same as the one shown in the video) the thin shell will be fine, but if you're going to upgrade your battery with a larger capacity one, you should get the thick shell.
@@EdwardsWorkshop If you use an iFlash Quad adapter and a 2000mah battery, you can fit them in a thin shell, according to the iFlash website. People have commented that it is a tight fit, but it does work.
Hey there, screwing the ribbon cable (lock switch) to the rear housing can be quite difficult if the screw is even slightly stripped. Try to replace the screw with a similar sized screw or use a crosshead screwdriver that is better than the default one which comes with the parts. If it still doesn't work please let me know.
I manually put them using iTunes; once you have the files on iTunes ready for sync, you can select the songs in an album, press right click, get info, and drag and drop the album art.
There is a Bluetooth transmitter than is not been talking about it enough, is the KOKKIA i10s and even works with aripods The baterry can be buy on iDemiGods and than gives it a bigger battery For the wifi and store i think there is nothing yet but maybe soon
No thanks, I prefer the old scool with no WiFi or Bluetooth. I hate having notifications and distractions while I’m jamming. These iPods worked very well because they did what they did the best. If Apple releases a 20th Anniversary, I’d definitely get it. More storage, ssd, same form factor hell remove video playback, just us and our music library with no notifications and distractions. And it would be cool to instead the shiny stainless steel look or chrome the material that the iPhone 5 had. No glass. Or the same material of the iPod touch 7the gen!!
But, iTunes is no longer compatible with the iPod Classic. It will not sync to iTunes sense iTunes version early 12. I have two iPod Classics (a 120 GB) and an unboxed 160 GB.
It should still sync to the iTunes, as they work in the latest version. If for some reason it doesn’t work, you can try to download an older version of iTunes.
@@EdwardsWorkshop i have tired this many times and my mac wont let me down load an older version .. can this be fix because i have an ipod classic which works perfectly but itunes wont recognise it
Random question, but do you have a way to get the old ipod games I saw you playing in the video? I used to own a handful of the games, but apple removed them from itunes and I can't find them anymore.
You can download something called "rockbox" on your iPod, which is another operating system (something like macOS and windows), but just on your iPod. There you can download games like Doom. If you want to download games on the iPod classic with the original OS, there are tutorials on youtube that tell you how to do it easily. Good luck!
I have a 30gb 5the gen video ipod that I'm converting to SD card but it has a problem even before I get to that. Had to replace battery and Screen has bars in it but I have a new screen to put on it.. Problem is when I tried to charge it up the keypad gets HOT and after a while it won't show menu, but just Very low battery but it won't charge.. Any idea what I should replace as I don't want to throw it away.. It started when I first put in new batt but soon ran it down then I found the overheating problem....
Hm.. I don't think I've ever heard the keypad getting hot. Are you sure it's the keypad? Try to open up the iPod again and operate it to see if there's another component heating up the keypad.
It definitely hasn't been done before, and it is possible if you buy a charging controller, but it will remove a lot of built in features from the iPod such as dock out.
@@EdwardsWorkshop I'm in the iPod discord server, and it turns out someone actually has done this! Although, I feel it's highly impractical, and will require lots of skill to pull off.
Hey, by USB port do you mean 30 pin? Not sure if you'll be able to replace all the features with USB because data transfer through firewire is proprietary.
Wow that reply was lightning quick. The answer is yes, it should function just like it did in the old days, except that you can't officially download iPod games (everything else should work fine). And I'm quite sure you don't need an "old" version of iTunes. It should work with all versions, including the current one.
Hey, it really depends on which pin you're talking about. If you don't know the exact name you could take a photo and send me a link. I'll gladly take a look!
@@EdwardsWorkshop I'm afraid quite a few of them are damaged. Is there any hope of ipod surgery?I'm over here in Donegal.Would it be possible to send you the ipod?
I'm afraid that the shipping will cost more than the cost of purchasing full replacement parts as I live on the other side of the globe. If the "pins" are broken on the motherboard, I might not even be able to repair it myself. If you could send me a photo it would help me a lot.
For the 5th and 5.5 gen, the cover is made of a plastic material which easily scratches. On the other hand, the 6th and 7th generation is made of an aluminum material that doesn't scratch easily.
@@EdwardsWorkshop yes they do. Sadly I don’t trust myself with this kinda stuff. I can build ikea shelves and dressers all by myself but give me a broken electronic device and I’m gone 😂 I’m scared that I will break it even more
If you can build Ikea shelves and such this will be easy for you! I fix electronic devices but every time I have to assemble furniture I fail horribly 😂😂 You'll never know unless you try!
Both my Mac computers and PC works natively with my iPod. I installed the latest version of iTunes and didn't do any tweaks, or anything of that extent.
Hey! I sold everything I've had and now I'm using the lcd-2F and lcd-xc. The iPod isn't meant for hi-end listening, but if paired with a portable such as pha-2 or 3, it can drive most headphones.
Damn I would kill for an iPod classic, with all the specs, options and and sound quality of an M15. Unfortunately, apple never knew how to do music right. They can't even implement gapless playback in 2020. It's not DSD to have o signal before and after the song, it is a some average recording, compress to now end, barely better then the old mp3 ppl, keep up with times already.
Yeah, it's just that the company makes these choices because the majority of people don't care about these features, and many consumers aren't aware of audio theory like compressed music, etc. Firms are profit driven so its likely that they implement flashy features such as better, larger displays and such to attract more customers.
@@EdwardsWorkshop yea and is really a missed opportunity. Apple with it's unique ability to sell anything could really introduce and educate people about good sounding music.
