great video. some stuff ive learned. first under the dimensions tab, i personally like to keep the aspect ratio as original to the video and then if i want it to cover the full screen i set the video settitng in the ipod to fullscreen on/off. btw the ipod supports video up to twice the ipod screen rsolution, so you could put in videos of 640x480p resolution, the ipod will display it exactly the same as a 320x240 on the ipod but its great if you want to watch those videos on a computer when the ipod is connected (increase the quality, of course). under the video tab, you have to make sure the encoder profile is set to baseline and encoder level is 1.3 anything else will not work as far as i know. i like to select bitrate and set it anywhere between 500 and 1000 kbps for such a small resolution of 240p, also it will bring down the size of the video file. 2 pass encoding will make it look even better/ be more efficient but it will take a little longer. on the audio tab, the first box shows the audio of the original video, if its aac then the aac passthru will work fine if not you will need to re encode it to aac, i set it to bitrate and anywhere between 190 and 320kbps will be perfect, i havent tested anything higher than that. the 6th and 7th gen ipods support 2 audio tracks and subtitles as well and can be switched in the ipod video settings. btw handbreak has a preset for ipods under devices called Apple240p30 which is a good quick start
I think I found a fix to my gen 7 problem! I have to type "ref=2" (no quotes) in the Extra Options box in the Video section and that fixes everything I had with the video. The high pitched noise is apparently fixed by using version 1.1.2, because the audio encoder in later versions are different
I would but, no easy way to plug it into my iPhone... if only it had A HEADPHONE JACK... I do plan on getting my nice DSLR involved, but right now I'm just focused on making the video happen at all.
@@spottedtango if your computer is near the desk you film in, you can record the audio track separately in your computer. then you can remove the audio track on your video and insert the audio track you recorded on your computer in whatever editing software you use. i use a 4 count clap to sync up the audio and the video. i hope you figure it out!
@@jackieburkhart3268 I know how to do it. It's more complicated than that. Mic requires phantom power, essentially a mixer. The same mixer I use to do everything audio related with my desktop. So yes, I could re-arrange my main desk, or figure out some sort of system to get my gucci mic involved. But what you and I just said takes more time to do than an entire edit takes me usually. These video's are done on inspiration; there's no script. Adding too much work between me and the video makes it feel too much like work, and I'm just here to have fun. Like that, see!
@@spottedtango honestly, idk what people are having a problem with. your phone mic sounds fine tbh. it's not too sharp on the ears like most phone mics, that's really the only thing.
This used to work for me but recently i tried to do it again and not the videos seem glitched and most of the time crash the ipod when i try to exit to the menu. I check to make sure it isn't the video itself before i put it on the ipod and i have no clue if it is the ipod or the converter. Any advice?
This might be too late, but now that I have the video, how do I actually get it ON the iPod? Also I'm using an iPod Nano 3 so I adjusted the dimensions to that. It seems that dragging and dropping the file doesn't work.
@@josephalvaro6206 add it to your itunes library, and ensure your iPod is set to sync videos/movies within iTunes. This can be done on the iPod's settings tab within itunes when it's connected. On modern Macs, same process you just do it through Finder

Honestly, I do not know about music videos specifically; but I'll look into it for a future video. If you use this method, you can put those videos on your iPod, but I assume it will show up under the general movies tab, and may not be at the best audio quality they could be. Apparently music videos did have enhanced quality over standard movies, but I have no personal experience with this topic.
If this happens with just one video file, out of many other attempts you've done with a different method; perhaps the 7th gen pods have some different requirements. This guide was specifically for the iPod Video 5.5G. I'd check and make sure that's the case however. Because what you describe sounds like a failing hard drive or logic board. Check and see if the video is glitchy and it freezes your pod with other encodes.
@@spottedtango The only one that works fine is the unchanged Apple 240p preset, but I hear high pitched sounds from time to time with this encoding option
@@kimjongoof5000 sounds like you've got a working solution for videos then, just use that 240p preset, and adjust the audio encode settings to maximize quality. Hopefully that will take care of the chirps you're hearing with that preset. If not try an AAC audio passthrough. Depends on what your source file used.
I would highly encourage you to go over the video again, starting with the version of handbrake you're using. If the H.264 encoding settings aren't correct or the video resolution is incorrect, the iPod won't take the video file. Hard to say what might exactly be your issue, but those are great places to start.
I've had a workbench for longer than he's had an iPod channel. That's not a diss or anything, I love his content myself. But yeah, the electronics work is nothing new.
