This documentary covers the period from 1827 with the establishment of the convict lime kilns, to 1904 when Ipswich became a City. #ipswichqld #queensland #brisbane
The area that was fenced off at the Bremer river got flooded during the 2022 floods and it got some damage to it. I sometimes research Ipswich flood events
I love Ipswich in winter. So crisp and beautiful. I used to drive out there and teach at the UQ campus. I always felt happy out there. Lovely old QLDer houses, rose gardens, old world charm.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip to Ipswich, Rob. It was an excellent video. You fit so much into your ~25 minutes and there's so much more to explore. I hope you make your way back soon. The only thing I'm surprised about is not including a beer at Pumpyard.
Great video Rob! Love Ipswich and I learnt some new things 😁 Lots of funny bits too 😆 Happy 150th video 🥳🥳 Did you know that up until a few years ago, you could climb the stairs to the top of the water tower at Denmark Hill? I'm not sure why the gate is padlocked now, but the views from up there were just amazing, especially at sunset.
All joking aside, I have to leave another comment. This video is fantastic. The old houses are just beautiful. You really have a gift for putting all the history of an area into an entertaining and informative viewing experience. Thank you 😊
@Shell awww thank you. I really appreciate all your feedback. I know I keep saying it but I love making these shows, so it's always great whenever people see them and enjoy them. I still think I could do so much better so will keep working at it...
You're very welcome Rob. I think you may be a bit hard on yourself. Everyone watching these enjoys your videos immensely just by the comments. On another note, Congratulations 🎊 🎉 on 150 videos...I've got some catching up to do 😅
Great vid Rob. I’m a proud Ipswichian who loves our city and it’s people. I live not far from the cemetery. The River Heart Parklands Walk is still probably fenced off from the 2022 Floods. Lots of old historic buildings have been torn down over the years, the Railway Station one of them. Shame, but the ones that remain are great to see everyday. Did you venture to the Workshops Rail Museum at North Ipswich? Great place to see. Perfect for your vids. Love to see a follow up from 1904 onwards.
I just had to re-watch again... I'm pretty sure I spied a Blue Steel moment when you were walking into the Denmark Hill Conservation Reserve. I too notice spelling mistakes all the time.
as a person who grew up in Brisbane and had a negative view of Ipswich and now have purchased a house in Ipswich i love the City and thanks for the Video your best Video Ever i have followed you for a long time and this is your best ever al the best mate
Rob Im gonna one day visit Ippy it looks very tranquil very historic one would say its the Parramatta is to Sydney. Ippy is to Brisbane thanks for the tour keep up the good work
Gidday Rob, my son Brendan actually was the one that directed me to your channel on RU-vid as I love the history of Ipswich and Brisbane... I'm loving your videos. I grew up in Ipswich and ive always had an affinity with history but obviously you've done a way better job of historical facts than I thought I had. lol. So I live in the United States now for like 20 years now. My grandfather who has been gone since I was 13yo. I'm now 60yo used to got hang out with local aboriginal kids in Dingo Hills now known as Gailes. he grew up in a house that was in Redbank that was right near the Shell Garage off of the Ipswich Road. My family has a quite the history in this region of Ipswich. I'd love to talk more about this if yo'd like. Cheers, Wes
I remember competing in the Ipswich theatre festival in the 70s. I think the Little Theatre still has its base at the building we played in. I remember the stage bein quite small.
You were SO CLOSE to the Ipswich Masonic Lodge. Its a very very old and historic one with many influential members to history... Its RIGHT NEXT to the Memorial building! Why didnt you check it out?
My job is not to explore everything. I select the places and events that personally appeal to me. Sometimes a building I wish to explore is closed or undergoing renovation. Sometimes access is denied. Many reasons.
Hi Rob great channel i was born in Ipswich and still in the family home with memories how our city has grown from strength to strength only thing i hate is My house could be inundated with flooding 🤠st Paul's has seen many weddings and funerals There My parents did both cheers Stephen 🤠✌️🦅
Give 'em a chance. They're doing their best. With the increased mining royalties there might even be something left after the essential expenditures for salaries and perks owing to the starving public servants, bureaucrats and polies are taken care of. 🤔😉
As a somewhat newish addition to Ipswich, it was very interesting to hear about the history of settlers in the city. Love Blackstone Reserve, even love the old buildings and churches in the CBD.
@Morgan Parker yes of course, it would require at least a 50 hour documentary to try and cover it all. I focus on the main points. Thanks though for watching though! I would like to go back and do the more recent history.
Thanks Rob for an interesting tour around Ipswich City, I was born 1937, Ipswich Town, Suffolk UK. there were many times in my 86 years when I wished for the oportunity to visit Australia. The City open spaces are vstly different to the IpswichTown, I admire the grand white homes there, the homes here are nainly red brick built. Their is a well known conection with farm machinery built by Ransomes in Ipswich Town that was shipped to Australia in the late 1800s, no doubt some were used on farms around Queensland.
@Derrick Palmer thanks for the comments. I was in the UK for quite a while last year but didn't make it to the Ipswich there. Yes there are some magnificent homes in this Ipswich, thankfully well preserved and looked after.
One forgotten point is that 200 million year old dinosaur footprints were found in coal near Blackstone (I think 1964) and Box Flat mining explosion (1972). Both significant events for Ipswich..
Really interesting, and there is still a lot more to discover including in the mediate surrounds. It's a credit to Ipswich that have have preserved so much of their heritage.
Excellent vid Rob. The boardwalk is fenced off from the 2021 floods, not the 2011 floods. I'm led to believe the little bronze statues of the kids playing in the creek are from Expo 88 but can't find anything to confirm this. Thanks for sharing your history lessons.
Thanks Rob. Great video, but how did you miss Ipswich Grammar School with its original building of 1863 still standing? Queenslands oldest secondary school.

@DIYDownunder thank you for the wonderful praise. Really made my day. Great to have you onboard with this little channel. Hope you enjoy the upcoming Beaudesert video.
Back in 1885 when I drove trucks Melb to Bris the Cunningham hwy went thru Ipswich . I was singing aloñg with Ian Dury, " I wanna be straight, I wanna be straight, I'm sick and tired of taking drugs and staying up late..." and forgot to turn right at the intersection and came to a dead end. The next trip Ipswich was bypassed.
Hey mate definitely the video looked so good in 4k, you deserve so many new subscriber's with your vocal and camera skills. also you got a good sense of humor. IPSWICH does looks so pretty. ... don't know why its got bit bad reputation hmmm guessing may be crime...😊😊
Nicely illustrated vid of Ippy I did a tour of Ipswich with my family at night was haunting and adventurous at the same time as our last stop appeared in all its glory think it was called St Mary’s church overlooking a Parklands was Epic to see at night absolutely loved it keep up the great content you upload;Bless you and thanks
Nice work, thanks Rob. This one hits a bit different because I'm a lot more familiar with the locations you visited. Somehow even more enjoyable to watch. There were also several places I've not seen. That boardwalk on the Bremer that was fenced off is flood damage from 2011 that was never fixed. I visited there shortly after the floods and the highwater marks were still easy to see. Those boardwalks were several metres underwater. Thanks for the tour and congrats on 150 videos!
Wow hasn't Ipswich changed since I last lived there back in 1984. Lived there for 7 years prior. Loved the placed but from what i've been told and appears to be true, a lot of the old Ipswich's character has been demolished. Must get back there to find out for myself.
Hi Rob. Just a few yards away from my home. It's not a bad place to live. Great parks and older features are restored. Climbing Denmark Hill is a bit of a challenge. Needs more good food places. Memories of India is my favorite.
Great walk Rob and history lesson even for those who've lived here for decades, just a shame that the River Heart Walk hasn't been fixed in over a year since the flood of 2022. Those brass children were originally in D'Arcy Doyle Place as a tribute to the legendary artist and re-housed on the river walk this century and there was a stream created plus a Waterfall using the brine water from the Bremer River.
Looing into it Gips also means gypsum and I wonder if that had something with the limestone they were mining, remember it said they changed the name from limestone hills, shame to lose the history of things
When i was i kid in Brisbane watchin the television when a story came up about Ipswich.I said to me Dad, wheres Ipswich? My father replied you don't wont to go there that's the End of the Earth.😂😂😂😂😂😂
In the 1980s I knew a guy who was ALLEGEDLY responsible for the renewal of Ipswich. He was convicted and later exonerated for burning down all of the buildings in the main Street. ( To police, he never admitted to doing it)
Congrats on the 150th episode. Great vid once again. As a long term watcher, i'd like to make one comment on this video, i dont think the editing in of the "humorous" extra clips actually works, but instead distracts and takes away the natural flow and "seriousness" of your doco's. I've seen this done on other channels and think the same. I do prefer your own quirky humour rob. Keep up the good work.
@BeardeDragon77 thanks for your feedback on that. I'm always trying to new little things here and there to see what works. Will keep your suggestion in mind for the next one.
I disagree with you completely! Life is too serious as it is. We work and work and work and pay bills to survive in this monotonous world...can't we have a bit of fun too? I like that Rob adds some humour to his videos while also being very educational.
You didn’t get the chance to mention some of the more colourful characters of the district, like Sidney Cotton (Book - Last Plane Out of Germany) or the link to Ned Kelly’s family. Your tour was still very interesting though. The Smith family and the Architect who built Woodlands Mansion at Marburg QLD. Marburg has a fascinating and surprising history too. (Feature in a John Jarratt movie, The Settlement) It is hard to believe it was once a thriving township when you see what is left today.
Maryborough could've been the capital also.. second oldest port in Qld and gold was transported from Gympie pass Maryborough along the Mary river.. In hindsight Maryborough would've been perfect as the Qld state capital..
Rob i tried to ask you about your Coomera story as my family Siganto n Lane owned n built everything there there is a book out Donw Memory Lane 200yrs on Gold Coast my grandfather and his brother Bob owned Helensvale there had a saw mill n farm they built the Mt Tamborine tavern as well there is a plauqe there in the tavern i was born in Ipswich in 1960 my mum married an coal miner dad worked at Box Flats can't wait for your story on Coomera thankyou
