Some advise on towing out dead sleds, I have used this trick in the mountains for over 20 yrs. I triple pack a track out, keeping the path slightly over 2 sled widths, then tie the right ski to the rear bumper, center, with the actual rope to do the pulling tied to the spindle. The ski tip is solid to the center of the rear bumper, but the real pull is tied to the spindle. With the belt on the dead sled pulled and the rider of that sled mountain 2- upping out, I have pulled dead sleds out of some nasty spots, the pull sled has complete control of the d ad sled, up hill and down hill, and when you get back to the trail, any oncoming traffic can see that you are towing a dead sled. An added bonus is the engine compartment is not packed full of snow.
I feel your pain, I rebuilt mine 5-6 times this season. Your best bet is to either buy a completely new unit or do the "bolt mod" - drill out the center of the recoil and use a bolt instead of that nasty retaining clip.
My 05 rev ate recoils untill i installed a bolt , washer instead of clip and use the metal pawl from a 06 1000 renegade.. never an issue after that. the 1000s replaced the plastic pawl with a metal one and can be used onnthe 800s.
Threw the handle on the Ski, and tied to the Spindle, you don't need to be on the sled that being towed? I know any of this is Difficult? Suck's.... Damn two smoke's!
omg I wish I had your problems now believe it or not. blow up sled. stuck sleds. whatever ot be. mine are in the trailer. its 50deg. and not a pinch of snow for miles
Race sled and putting it in the deep mountain snow isnt a very great idea, i did it with my 1998 xcr 440 and put a 136 track suspension set up on her and had many problems. My buddy had a 97 rmk and that had not nearly as many problems as the xcr 440, i guess it was only for trails, ditches and races.
In my opinion skidoo has always had bad recoils. Even the good old 583s had that stupid recoil design where if you need to take it off you need to undo the steel band and all of that crap. That part is easy until you go to put it back on, and the huge rubber gasket never wants to stay in place when you are trying to get the recoil band on and the bolt for the steel band is too short to touch the other side. What a PITA! My Yamahas have about 3 or 4 simple bolts holding the recoil on. No screwing around with trash designs, no hassle.
Maybe now you will heed my advice about not letting go of your recoil letting it slam back in after you start it. You bring this hatred for skidoo recoils on yourself buy wrecking it a bit at a time every single time u let go of it. When u fire it up slowly return your cord back to its resting pount and your recoil will live a ling happy life. Or just keep slammin it back and keep complaining about it.....either way its good entertainment for me.
