Jazz Ensemble Library - Grade 4
Featuring a quirky blend of reggae and blues, this original by jazz master John La Barbera is an appealing and unique change of pace. Solo space is provided for tenor sax, along with spicy riffs for entire ensemble. (Recorded by the John La Barbera Big Band)

Electric bassists who can sight read this part...approx 10 in the world

Tried to sightread it as a sub yesterday, pretty hopeless to get it even to 50%. However, I discovered a bunch of things: If you nail the "dah-daps" and leave the upper-register triplet stuff to the keys, the reggae groove is already pretty solid. I guess if pianist stays away from the left hand, bassist can fake/approximate the feel of the full groove with reduced risk of collision. I was really glad the bari sax has their own part and not another copy of bass.

Great! Something different for big band. (The style reminds me about Erlend Skomsvolls arrangements for Chick Corea.) But to pick up the elephant in the big band room: Tenor solo,- always? In almost every big band arrangement you can find? Why? Seriously? Why didn't anyone tell me when I was a kid? Then I would'nt chosen the trombone! :-)

I know! Sometimes they try a bit too much to put a tenor solo (like with their arrangement of Smackwater Jack, there's not even a tenor solo written in and the one that's there is not good to listen to.) I much appreciate the cool thing for the 4th trumpet, though.

Anybody notice this sounds remarkably similar to the Overture from Whiplash??
