The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, nicknamed “the Butcher of Tehran”, has just been killed in a helicopter crash.

While many in Iran are apparently mourning his death, Raisi was a divisive figure, and was deeply unpopular with some Iranians. Raisi rose through the ranks of Iran’s judicial system. He became infamous for his leading role in a so called ‘death committee’ that oversaw the mass execution of Iranian political prisoners in 1988.
