Duran v Barkley was one of the greatest fights of all time. Barkley fought the fight of his life. He was the sharpest you ever seen him during that fight, and he would have beat ANYONE except a determined Duran on that particular night. Being 37 at the time, Duran might have been well past his prime, but the extra years of experience helped him to overcome the huge hurtles of fighting Barkley who was an absolute Giant, throwing lighting fast triple jabs, hooking off the jab, and RIPPING to the body about as much as you could ever hope to see. Beautiful textbook boxing from the "slugger" whos technical skill was very overlooked before that time. Barkley was a 50% better fighter than he had ever been before that night. He and Duran both showed true mastery of the "sweet science" of boxing. And delivered a fight for the ages.
@@thelevisullivan yeah i wasnt talking about barley, i was talking about Durans he got his ass kicked when he went up vs hearns, he quite literally had nothing to give back in that fight other than some quick punching inside
Agree, it was one of the best fights of all time. Duran produced that final great performance, and he showed when he was focused and trained hard for a fight what he was capable even at the age he was at.
If you watched the fight between him and Duran, and I bet you did, you saw the greatness of both Men. Of all Duran's fight the one vs Iran is one of my favourites and the greatest statement to Duran's (and Iran's) greatness. Duran was 38 at he time!!!!! He gave Iran one of hardest matches of his career. And Barkley did the same, he was in inhuman shape and he was a hell of a boxer, very underrated in my opinion. He was lighting quick, punched VERY hard (his left hook in particular was vicious) and could take some really big hit and still survive 15 rounds. By his side Duran was veery close to a KD at least once. And Duran was a semi-God of the ring that dropped veeery few times during an incredibly long career. So great great respect to Iran Barkley. At the end of that fight huge huge love and respect between them. Earning Duran's purest respect speaks a lot of Iran's value as a boxer.
it have to do with genetics some fighters take punishment and you see it some take punishment and nothing comes out of it Julio cesar chavez sr Roberto duran took more punishment then anybody but they sound great
Vedran Tole well duran best leanord. And leanord best him. So they are kinda tied... hoenstly it’s your cup of tea on whoever you like but the four Kings of boxing are just that the four kings.
Great to see and hear from The Blade after all these years. His KO of Hearns ranks right up there in shock value with Foreman vs Frazier 1. It appears that he has his health. That's a beautiful thing. All the best you you Iran for a long, healthy and prosperous life.
He shocked the world for sure. I've not seen too many get beaten up so thoroughly, to head and body, as Barkley was by Hearns that first time. Then out of nowhere BOOM! Turned the fight upside down
Duran/Barkley was a classic. A 15 round war is the best description of that fight. No one gave Duran, at 37 years old, a chance to defeat the 28 year old champion, Barkley. Round 4 was Ring Magazine's round of the year, but just about every round was fought at an incredible pace. Quite possibly, the best fight I've ever seen, and I've seen some incredible fights.
Dubon Gros duran started at lightweight he turned pro at 16 homie he was a true welterweight light middleweight, he was not a lightweight or a light heavy if that makes u feel any better. but he started at lightweight when he was 16, in top condition in his prime he was a true 147lber that beat sweet as sugar ray leonard and beat the shit out of him too.
all the above i agree with..but best fight you've ever seen? It was a rally good fight i'll agree.....nbc sports world or CBS late afternoon..i remember it well and it shocked me Duran could keep up that pace and stay with him punch for punch, but he did. It was one of Duran's finest performances, albeit at the tail end of his career. For those born in the 70's that only caught the tail end of his career, this was a vintage performance and one for the ages..to say it was unexpected would have been a massive understatement-as far as other fights that would qualify over this imo and not in this order but Ward vs Gatti, Marquez vs Israel Vazquez, Corrales vs anybody, Taylor vs Chavez, Arguello vs Pryor, Boom Boom vs Doo Ku Kim - and almost all Juan Manuel Marquez fights, just to name a few.....if you've seen that many fights, this couldn't possibly be the greatest fight you've ever seen I hope
Barkley was as tough as they come, and although skill wise he fell a little short, nobody could doubt his courage. As for Duran, he shocked everyone with how well he handled a tough cookie like Barkley, and the fact that he scored the knockdown was remarkable. This is one of my all time favourite fights.
Gil Clancy said it best of the knockdown of Barkley, " You want to see a surgeon operate on someone. There's a surgeon for ya. " The combination was beautiful.
Its stunning how lucid and on point Iran is, a man who has been in bloody wars with the greats. He is like a gold mine of terrific anecdotes of his brush with champions, and insider notes on the content of their character. Greatest of respect to Iran "The Blade" Barkley.
i have followed the fight game since rocky marciano and i have seen a lot of great fighters.but someone that never gained the respect they deserved for never laying down or thinking of quiting was iran barkley.the man fought his heart out every time he got in the ring, win lose or draw, iran gave it all.in mt humble opinion there was never a greater warrior.and for that spirit he will always be a true champion.
courtney hall I agree. He was always talked of by the commentators and others as a tough contender, but as you said, he was much more. A true and deserving champion and a nice guy to booth.
Barkley vs Sims, Barkley vs Olajide, Barkley vs Duran. 3 back and forth rockem sockem robot type fights. All 3 were fight of the year calibre bouts. Barkley was a God damn warrior. Heart like a lion.
George Ybarra, I loved Terry Norris. Boxer, puncher, very skilful. Fast. He took some heavy ko’s too but he didn’t suck anybody. It’s horrible to see him struggling now but he still physically at least, looks like an athlete.
I met Duran right here in Miami about 25 years ago. It was at a amateur boxing even and I was working with the stand-by medical team. Duran moves really quick. It's hard to get a complete anatomical look at this guy. He just zooms by and you're looking baffled saying to yourself, was that Roberto Duran that just zoom by. Only thing I really saw was a man with the biggest smile on his face waving at everyone as he zooms by. Much respect for Duran. Sugar Ray was smart enough to change his strategy to win the rematch. All Sugar was doing tagging and running. A lot of fans didn't like that style of fight from Leaonard. All I gotta say is, you all were not in the ring with the Duran when he demolishing Leonard when they fought toe to toe. I would have stick and ran just like Leonard did in that rematch. The first match between Duan and Leonard, showed me Leonard Furznhad a Lion's heart. He lost that fight but he didn't go down with those monstrous body blows on Leonard. Leonard buckled a few times but he didn't go down. Duran hunts you down like a predator after a prey. One of the goats. Thanks for the memories Duran. Duran was the first Latino boxer my people rooted for even when he was facing black boxers.
Iran one off my favorite boxers, I liked his skills - I think he was a real good boxer - and heart, he was always respectful, and look at him as a person: a lovely, warm-hearted man.
You've got to hand it to Iran, he gave arguably the greatest boxer of all-time one hell of a fight. Barkley is definitely under rated. Just his performance against Duran alone puts him in a very elite group of fighters. Respect.
Barkley was one of the toughest fighter ever. Michael Buffer said tbe best fight he ever saw was Barkley vs Duran. Barkley was 28 and Duran 37 when they fought. Duran looked so much smaller. Barkley became champion after beating Hearns, but was really perceived by many as a very tough contender and not in the class of Hagler, Leonard or Duran. He was and still is a nice guy. Remember him hugging Duran and saying nice things even after a tough loss to the hands of stone. I wish him well.
Iran Barkley ? For real ? Damn, this dude takes care of himself, no doubt, I was a kid when he fought Duran, glad to see this man is ok and in good spirit
big difference is Duran gave leanord a boxing lesson in the fight that wasnt over before the bell rang, walters didnt beat lomenchenko. Leanord himself said duran was by far the best fighter he fought on the jim rome show.
Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Marciano and Joe Louis might be up there as well man.. Duran was great but not the best of all times imo, definitely top ten though. I definitely disagree with the hands down thing though, different weight classes etc. are hard to judge but Duran I will admit was a great one! I enjoyed watching his fights as well online.
It's amazing that Hearns knocked out Duran in 1984 and five years later Barkley had knocked Hearns out and Duran then beats Barkley! Duran was truly an all time great. Easily in the top 20. Iran Barkley is really cool. We need more like him in boxing.
That's only amazing if you don't understand boxing. It's not about Fighter A lost to fighter B and fighter B lost to fighter C, therefore fighter C beats fighter A. It's about their style, their physical attributes (which should be how you choose to fight, style wise, not emulating what you like), and how that matches up against the other fighter. Duran fights nothing like Hearns, therefore Hearns beating Duran but losing to Barkley has nothing to do with how Duran will fare against Barkley.
Hearns was clearly not a good match for Duran, simply because of Hearns physique. Long and rangy. His style was not to Duran's liking either. Hit and run. Evasive, and not an infighter, as Haggler proved. It was a bad loss for Duran, but no shame in it!
This was a great Warrior - tough as they come! ...and there's no shame in losing to Duràn, afterall - especially in that way - it was a very close fight (not to mention one of the best fights that you could ever see).
People don’t realize that Duran started fighting at 122 Fratherweight and fought prime Middleweight legends like Ray, Hearns, Hagler and no cathweight demands.
Great to see Iran is up and around and doing okay!!!......his assessment of Duran is so correct.....a brilliantly executed fight by Hands of Stone....Iran Barkley was a tough fighter, no nonsense....keep going strong!!!
Much respect to Iran Barkley and the respectful comments speaks volumes about what a honorable, warrior you were during your time in the ring. Yes Barkley vs Duran was one for the books.
Ice Vein Productions!!! Yo I LOVE your video mixes, I use to watch them all the time on the way to the gym...you're right though, he does look like Biz.
Gran boxeador, humilde persona, great gentelman. Barkley, great warrior! A big hug for him! Dios te bendiga noble y fuerte guerrero!
Big Respect, Iran Barkley! Never seen him in a dull-fight always the aggressor Mans been involved in nothing but Wars! seen him being broke up few times. The man endures pain like its nothing. Was great hearing him talk , Sounds sharp an up together looking fit and healthy.Iran Barkley keeping it real as Ever Bigup Tru School Sports Great !
Duran at the time he fought Barkley was by far not a prime Duran, A prime Duran obviously is at lightweight but for me Duran matched Toney on boxing ability but had more power than him, Either way would be a good fight.
By time Duran fought Barkley he was way past his best but still beat Barkley at a weight class that wasn't even his natural weight, Duran in his prime was one of the most masterful boxers seen that along with his punching power made him a tough fight for anyone.
Iran needs to remember all the fights Duran had heading into that fight...as well as Duran's age ! Iran caught him, yes...but what Duran did was out of this world...dropped Iran late like the beast he was. Duran is one of my favorites all time...and...Iran ...I have a ton of respect for you...you owned Hearns...to that there is no question...tough as nails and what a left hook !!
Iran = a great ambassador for NY, New York City, etc. Also a great Ambassador for the sport. (per Jose Sulaiman Jr. praise) Great to see these guys at middle age - remembering the Wars. -and they're still fiery - you still see that look in their eye. ...
Indeed he is. He stopped by my gym today and had kicked it with Tracey Patterson for a while. We watched his first fight against Hearns and he is an incredibly nice and knowledgeable man.
