The Iranians pushed them out without a proper standing army using air power and ambushes, the Iraqis only got good in the 80s when the Iranians started really pushing for basra, but even then they were mediocre at best. Probably better than the Iraqi army of today but that's about it

I believe he served a short term as Saddam's deputy, but had to retire due to disagreement with Saddam. Saddam however allowed him to live despite their differences. Later he became the assembly speaker and reappeared on RU-vid denouncing the sanctions that caused many Iraqi children to die. He survived the fall of Saddam and died several years later. He was elderly by the time of his death. If more Westerners knew about him maybe the 2003 war would not have happened.

But there is nothing out of the ordinary about that, perhaps certain elements are lamentable but in geopolitics if you aren’t gaining you are losing. I don’t see how this could be viewed as negative, unless you are some kind of communist or pacifist or whatever
