What are Iranian trains like? Pretty awesome!! We took the Kupe class night train from Mashhad to Tehran and were very impressed. This is the kind of comfort you can expect, all for less than $10 US.

We shared our 4 berth cabin with a very friendly Iranian mother and son. Although there was a language barrier, we got along very well. Iranian people are incredibly kind and friendly. It was a wonderful experience.
This was just one of many train journeys we took whilst travelling from Europe to Asia and back again on Our Grand Tour of the Eurasian Continent. An ongoing journey that has taken us 2 and a half years so far. Check out our other train journeys on this trip.

I am an American, Spanish. I went to Iran with an American passport two years ago. I am 23 years old and a girl. The truth was I was very scared but I wanted to see Iran. Let me say a few things about Iran: Everywhere I went I told everyone I am American. I expected them to hate me but they loved me. No one took extra money from me. Even in most places, they did not charge me at all. When I asked them why, they said that we Iranians have a hospitable nature. Even with ourselves. Iran is safer than the United States. Nobody bothered me, nobody attacked me, nobody cheated, nobody frowned at me, nobody hated me. Iran is like a miracle for human beings. This is a fact. Thank you Iran Thank you Iranian people I love you❤🇺🇸🇮🇷❤

That is so heart warming and lovely to hear. We had a similar experience too and met so many people who were kind and welcoming. Travel shows us the true nature of people and proves so much that the media so often feeds people with a false reality and keeps people in fear. The following year we continued our travels and passed through Iraqi Kurdistan where we experienced the same level of hospitality and generosity. I feel honoured and very humbled to have met such kind and warm people. 😍

What an amazing video! This was so cool to experience the train travel through your eyes. We are definitely going to do the same. We might try and learn a bit of farsi beforehand too! Thanks for the tip about the bed Lee, shame you learnt it a little late for yourself!😂

So glad you enjoyed it. It's really cool and great value travelling by train in Iran. People are friendly and helpful too. This was luxury for us! Mandy worked out the bed in the morning after i spent the night squashed in to a small space! Good luck with Farsi. It's certainly good to learn some phrases to communicate with people and we quickly learned to identify the numbers which is imperative! Happy travels there. You'll love it.

That quick shot of the free drinking station gave me so much info about the local culture. Those train seats look so comfy and really fun patterns on the backs. We absolutely love traveling by train. And getting to sleep on the train with that gentle rocking--such a treat! We just subscribed, would love to be RU-vid friends!

I paid $50 for a train ride from Anakara to Tehran in 2012. Its called the Trans Asian Express. Normally the train leaves istanbul on Wednesday morning and get to Tehran friday evening. You take a Turkish Train to Tatvan, In Tatvan you sail across to lake Van and get onboard an Iranian train. You got to get off the train to be stamped out of Turkey in Kapikoy, but then you get stamped into Iran while on the train.

That is an awesome, classic train journey and definitely one I want to do myself one day. To go on the hippy trail across Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India. I love the sound of the fact that you get off to take the ferry across lake Van. Turkey has so many amazing places. Did you travel around Iran much afterwards?

We'd loved to have had the chance to capture more scenery on this night train journey but unfortunately it was dark for almost the entire duration of the journey. Once morning came, it was a quick breakfast and we were in Tehran. I'd like to return and do the trip to Mashhad by daytime as the desert scenery would be spectacular there. Iran is amazing! 👍 - Lee

Iran is an incredible country to visit and I'd recommend it to anyone. Sometimes it can be tricky to travel due to the language barrier and working out money and simple things like that but it is definitely worth the effort. We wrote a blog post with budget travel tips if you are interested. frugaltravellers.com/frugal-travel-guide-iran/ Please ask if you have any further questions. 😊

**IMPORTANT: The only thing to be careful about is the fact that Iran, along with 7 other countries, is on the US watchlist. If you go to Iran, Iraq etc you won't be eligible for an ESTA and must apply at the US embassy in your home country & pay $150 for a 10 year visa: Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP): Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).

1.2 Million Rial was about 7 quid at the time if you change from the moneychangers (not bank rate). I wrote an in depth blog post on our costs in Iran. frugaltravellers.com/frugal-travel-guide-iran/ Hope this helps. Only problem is at the time you could not travel independently in Iran on a UK, USA or Canadian passport and needed to be on a tour. Not sure of the current situation but worth checking out in advance.
