Modern historians have stressed that factionalism was one of the great weaknesses of the colony and contributed to its inexorable decline, but it is possible to exaggerate this development. Royal authority certainly diminished in the late Middle Ages, but factionalism was hardly the principal cause. Admittedly the development in its place of strong local lordships centered around the earldoms of Kildare, Ormond, and Desmond led to intense competition for control of the office of chief governor. From 1414, there was a prolonged struggle for political power between the earl of Ormond and the Talbot family. When the Wars of the Roses gripped England from the 1450s, the opposing houses of Lancaster and York became identified in Ireland with the earls of Ormond and Kildare, respectively. This Geraldine-Butler feud continued into the early modern era. However, the intricacies of these various conflicts have only casually been studied, and we should be cautious about attributing to them the “decline” of English lordship in Ireland. The great lineages survived in frontier conditions by employing unorthodox but expedient methods. Their private armies and networks of power admittedly could be used for destructive purposes, both against each other and against the administration. However, although they were technically illegal, it was arguably these methods that ensured their survival and contributed to the endurance rather than decline of the "Irish Lords" control over much of Ireland.

That was awesome and I'm glad I found you guys again. I like this format a lot. It wasn't too long but had a lot of information. I was able to hear you very clearly too and the visuals were very nice but not reliant on so I could just listen to it and not be totally lost. Now I'm going to watch your other videos. I saw that literally had my name on it. :P

I have an ancestor who was born in Ireland in 1390 and was buried in Yorkshire. I wonder if he went across the Irish sea for something to do with the WOTR? Hopefully this can shed some light on the political climate and whether Irish did fight for one or both sides in support.

What was the real power of the Irish parliament at that time? I mean, did it allow Ireland to be quite autonomous or was it just a kind of strawman in place to please the locals? I tend to go for the former. Am I right? By extension, same question for Scotland.

It was very much a English strawman. More and more the Hiberno-Norman nobility Did what every they wanted and more money was taken out of the hands of the Irish Parliament by both the Irish Lords and the King of England , the more it just become a powerless figure of the crown. Because they looked more and more to the likes of the Fitzgerald's for support it really just turned in to the Irish Lords like Fitzgerald's running Ireland , just sighing off laws at the end with "for the King of England." That's one of the reason's why Henry VII says that Gerald FitzGerald was "King, all but in name."
