I mostly upload violin music but sometimes I upload piano music. I first became aware of the music of Medtner from Repin's recording of the 3rd violin sonata.
Listening to his piano music has been somewhat of an addiction for me in the hands of pianist Irina Mejoueva. To be honest all of her recordings have been a massive source of wonder.
Skazki No. 2 In a Minor, Op. 51
Skazki No. 4 In a Minor, Op. 51
Sonata-Elegy in D minor op.11 No.2
3 Morceaux op.31
Night Wind Sonata Op. 25 No. 2
Skazki No. 2 is normally about 3 and a half minutes, the reason it is about 7 minutes long is because she recorded it twice, so I uploaded both if you listen closely the two recordings differ slightly, well that and it's my favorite piece by Medtner and ends too quickly so I like to hear it as a repeat. Everything except The Night Wind Sonata has already been uploaded before, just wanted to put all my favorites in one file.

This is one of my favorite videos on RU-vid. I particularly appreciate the pairing of Medtner's most compact sonata (Sonate-Élégie, Op. 11/2) with his most expansive (the Night Wind). I'm learning the Elegy Sonata now, and this is a great reference recording, along with Elena Endeberya's.

The composer and the pianist were new to me. I love both. Thank you!

Incredible performance, especially Night Wind Sonata. Reminded me of Charles Ives' Concord Sonata, very challenging to listen to, bel canto is stretched, distorted, shaken by nightmare. Incredibly difficult to play much less to listen to. Mejoueva always searches and finds the "music". Because Medtner's compositional technique exhausts the melody, repetitiously elaborating with technical flourishes but not introducing new emotional/melodic content, it can sound, to me, like a battle royal, and it bores me. I have the Hamish Milne recording, and that's what I'm referring to. Mejoueva keeps it interesting. Difficult, hard to believe someone could write Night Wind, and another person perform it so well.

Ben Leet..Thank you for your comments. I'd heard of the composer but don't recall having heard his work before, same for the pianist. But your comments were helpful & enlightening. Thanks for taking the time to write in!

Agreed, this is a glorious, deeply emotional, epic performance, and well recorded too. One of the best heard, it may even be as good as Hamelin.
