This mechanical iris cabinet was built from a combination of wood, brass and 3D printed parts. It has a diameter of 30 inches and a wingspan of 48 inches when fully opened. There are over 100 parts, 30 bearings, and 16 axes of rotation in this design.
This cabinet has been on my mind for 3 years. I knew how I thought it should function and look, but didn't think that I had the skills necessarily to build it. So I decided to wait until I felt more capable before attempting the project. After years of dreaming and the past 6 weeks of prototyping the iris mechanism, I am so happy to see it finally come to life. Most importantly, this personal achievement has given me affirmation: I am ready to build awesome things.

Absolutely you can make beautiful things. I love how you've integrated interesting visual elements to account for the iris splaying out. Often these designs include a big box to hide those, and it usually ends up making the project large and the iris appear small. Well done!

The iris door, the thing of the future, yes! It would be very ideal and practical for space stations in the future! I also predict they will use the same principle of the iris as a valve for auto drip faucets to use in the winter time to keep pipes from freezing. The Iris will open and close every half second to allow one drop of water through. It will be based on the same principle as a maglev train using a magnetic force moving the train forward, except, the computer will be programmed to send a magnetic pulse back and forth making it possible to open and close the iris using speed controls on a console in front of the faucet. There would be a wire or something that leads from the control console all the way through the faucet leading to the Iris, if it's not possible right now, they will figure it out later.

How did you figure out the shape for the 5 petals? I am trying to make an opening similar to this but on a smaller scale, and am having difficulty with the "doors". This is one of the most gorgeous and incredible creations I have ever seen

Thanks! The shapes come from drawing circles and removing lines. There are 5 leafs on this iris so you draw 5 points around the circumference of the circle. Then using each those points as centers, draw 5 circles that extend to the iris center. Then remove lines. It is all just overlapping circles

What's the chances you'd be willing to sell the STL files for those gears? I'm not much of an engineer but this is one of the coolest cabinets I've ever seen.

Thank you! Unfortunately I do not plan on releasing the files for this project in the foreseeable future.
