Iris Care After Flowering 

Big time. That ring structure is a dead giveaway.

I agree, it's a tough job to divide. So when i do, i plant them 18 inches apart.

When is the best time to divide?

I'm in KY. My irises bloomed very early this year. And the spot they're in is very packed. Can I thin them now, at the end spring? They're very overcrowded on a small spot between the mailbox & road curb.

@@tdginter I would normally thin them out after blooming, never before. If it's done blooming then dig want you want out and leave the rest as next year you'll want them to bloom. Depending on the v ariety it can take sometimes 2 - 3 years after you transplant. I also do a very thorough cleaning of the roots first I soak it in cool but not cold water to loosen the soil. Once the soil is off I'll put them in a a 1 part bleach to 10 parts water (for about 30 minutes) as this kills any bacteria, fungus or parasites that may be hanging on the root. Ensure the soil is nicely tilled so it can establish its roots. Once it is transplanted it normally will take an iris a few years to complete it's growth circle. Youll notice on some of your older iris rhizomes they will form almost like a circle if they are german bearded ones. For Siberian irises it takes them at least three years to bloom after transplanting. But I don't know if you can grow those where you are at. I'm up in Canada so I can't really successfully grow louisiana irises.

Also a KY girl asking about the huge bulb after they bloom you said that's seeds? tell more about that,I know nothing.?

My irises did not come back this ear except for maybe three or four flowers. Can you tell me why?

@@rmullins9596 after they bloom if you see a swollen pod, then pollination has been successful. Leave it on for the rest of the summer. Eventually the pod will turn wrinkly and eventually dry until it's brown. At the end of the summer generally you can harvest the seeds. Siberian Irises will self-propagate by just shaking the pods when they are brown, and you cut things down at the end of the year. But there are many different varieties of irises. Find out which one you have, and you'll be able to figure out the best timing on when to harvest the seeds and plant them. etc.

Brand of fertilizer you use?

@@shawndakramer7352 just any 10-10-10..at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Also used for grass. Comes in a large bag.

Why would you fertilize in fall? They are going dormant.

The farm I bought my iris from, also said leave stalk. Moisture is important and healthy.

fall fertilizer helps build strong root reserves for next year.

When I first started with irises I cut the stalk after the first flower bloomed. I didn't realize that each stalk will eventually have several flowers on it. Oh the mistakes one makes when learning. :) I hope you get as much enjoyment from your garden as I have in my 70 years. I started as a child...digging weeds out of my dad's beautiful dichondra lawn.

The spent blooms oft times develop a pod what is its significance and should that stem be kept? Cut?

Gosh, I'm not sure. Iris borer is not common in my area, so don't have any experience to share. Hope you find some good information.

They will multiple a lot without mowing over them. I've never done anything to mine, and the spot they're it way overcrowded in 3 - 4 yrs.
