Dang the hair! Bring back the old look it was way better. Also it looks almost more simplified now a days with some of the steps. Some of the dancers look so floppy, like they are dragging themselves across the stage.
We understand your comment and a lot of people feel the same way. We think it is just the progression from being a folk art dance form, primarily found in Ireland to a more mainstream dance form due to Riverdance and Lord of the Dance along with other shows. The show style basically has come into Irish Dance. Further, the older costumes are very bulky and difficult to dance today's more athletic style so the costumes have changed dramatically. As for the hair...we agree with you and have put in coverage in the magazine encouraging those to tone down the look. We also do not like the overly large wigs! The tanning actually began in Ireland. That just took off...apparently it looks better on the big stage in terms of overall look. We personally like the bling, the makeup, but not the big hair. Most, if not all, dance forms or any stage performance you will typically see strong makeup due to stage lighting. So, Irish Dance is not alone in that aspect of use of makeup.
@@IrishDancingMagazine personally, I don't mind the pageantry so long as the dancing is still more important, but I think it's awesome that you put so much time and effort into writing a thoughtful reply! ❤
@@chloelanteigne-marrow7508 thank you! We care so much about Irish Dance and also think some of the look as you pointed out is too extreme. Hoping our coverage of better looks and styles (especially hair) will help bring it back to a more toned down look but we do love the costumes - so expertly crafted and beautiful - especially in person!
What's with Marge Simpson hairdos and tutus? As an Irish woman and ex- dancer I find it embarrassing. It's a shame, it detracts from the wonderful skills on show.
The stages have grown larger and the stress is about travelling as far as you can impressively, throw a grand kick, then travelling like a racehorse to the other side of the front of the stage to keep in adjudicators' eyes, Result is poor stagecraft and floor patterning and a loss of or severe reduction of interesting motifs and traditional content. Lots of skill and stamina, less artistry.
