ALL ABOUT REELS with Kirsten Allstaff
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Four/4 is so named after the time signature of the reel (4/4). The reel is a tune type that many players find challenging due to breathing obstacles, speed and stamina issues. Using the reel as the vehicle of focus, Kirsten shares with us pretty much everything she knows about the flute, how she dealt with her weaknesses (common to most players) and overcame them, tricks for improving breathing, practice apps and wonderful classical flute warm-up exercises that have been adapted for the Irish tradition.
This course suits the intermediate to advanced flute player who is really seeking to develop their talent and take their playing to a new level of dexterity and fluidity. Be sure to scroll down for an in-depth course description as this is the biggest course on offer here at OAIM and is packed with wisdom and guidance from a professional Irish flute player (and teacher) with over 30 years playing experience.
By the end of this course, you will have greatly improved the qualities of your playing with regard to tone, intonation, breathing, stamina, rhythm and speed. You will have learned some incredible warm-up exercises that will stand to you for your entire playing career. Plus of course, you will master the art of reels on your flute all the while adding 13 beautiful reels to your repertoire.

@@onlineacademyofirishmusic thanks for the reply Kirsten. Really like your playing of March for the king of loaise love the crans and a couple of scotch snap in the second part. I know the morvan are a great flute but what's the secret of the bottom D awesome. Maybe you know the history of the train journey north. I t was composed by pm Tom Anderson from Scotland who lived in Dublin in the 1970s and he travelled north on the train to teach st Patrick's pipe band donaghamore co Tyrone .hence the sound of the train on the lines inspired him. Awesome on the flute and bagpipes .fm Montgomery pipe band played it on there medley a few years ago.small bit of history there Kirsten. I wrote a March some time ago for my grand daughter. Shannon heaton played it last Saturday on her weekly virtual session if you would like to have the notes I would send them to you. Just like to hear your take on it. Take care and stay safe Kirsten. I would really have joined long ago if there had been some guitar lessons other than just backing. But I reckon OAIM is an awesome website/academy. Do you know about any album of a guitar duet? With 1 flatpicking and the other 1 backing? Tapadh leibh, Kristen 😽💖 Great lesson, very interesting, even for none flute players. Kind regards from An Bheilg. You are from Alba, right? That accent. I am struggling with whether or not the right "ring" finger can or cannot (should or should not) be held down on bottom hole during G, A, B, C, to support flute. It looks like Kirsten is doing that here. I see some who will always and only use the right pinky not on a hole for right hand support. I have been playing with ring finger on bottom hole for support. What's a player to do???

It’s true that usually ríleanna ar played 10-15% faster than póirt dúbáilte
@onlineacademyofirishmusic
@onlineacademyofirishmusic 3 года назад
I think this is generally true, however different musicians play tunes at different speeds. I particularly love reels played at a much slower pace than normal.
@Melvorgazh
@Melvorgazh 3 года назад
@@onlineacademyofirishmusic #metoo 😛 But thanks to Kevin Burke’s tips to play faster I am able to play not too slow now. Generally in Ireland you play damn fast. For dancing it’s cool. But slower with a classy and fun sean-nós dancer I prefer too. :) In which band does that lovely and sympathetic Kristen Allstaff play? Thanks. Blian Úr Mhaith agaibh at @OAMIM

@@onlineacademyofirishmusic Hi again! Who is I? Kristen herself? In Contae An Chláir they play slower than Dún na nGall, and I love the flavour of their Music also. I would love to learn how to play along with a metronome. Nowadays I mostly use the metronome as warming up playing scales but can’t play well a reel or jig with the metronome. I’d need to see some examples with tunes I already know I guess. Do you have videos with the musician playing with the metronome on your channel @OAIM Kindest Greetings from Brussels, Belgium. Hope to see that very nice Lady Halstaff on Tune Supply Live session as special guest some day :)

Hi Yashi, you will be looking for a plastic flute then?

@@onlineacademyofirishmusic yeah that would be a nice option to start as long as it has the same "setup" (holes positions i guess) of a wooden one, to then switch to a more expensive one
