@@DianeJennings I remember that too. On the day he died, I was home from school for lunch- back then we lived close enough to school to walk home for lunch. When the radio said he was shot, I didn't get it right- the emotion of the announcer affected his pronunciation, and I thought he had said "shocked"... so I imagined that he had tried to get toast out of the toaster with a knife, which our mom said would result in our dying from being shocked. It wasn't until I went back to school after lunch and the crying teacher talked to us that I understood it correctly.

I was just 3 years old when Captain Kangaroo first aired on television but I remember watching it even at that age. There were many more characters but it was fun to watch. I am not exactly sure but I think the show originally started in Pittsburgh just like Mr Rogers. Thank you Diane for another great video. I always enjoy what you post and love what I can contribute to it if possible. I love you and Chewie and Editor Diane and hope you stay safe. I can't wait for your next video. I loved Capt. Kangaroo as a kid. We hardly got to see Mr Green Jeans, and Grandfather Clock here though. Some of the celebrities were Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Dinah Shore. I think the 3 guys singing good morning were the Hudson Brothers. If so one of them is Kate Hudson's dad. Thanks for showing this Diane.

The show was for kids from age 3 to about 8. I was 4 in 1955 when the show first came on in black and white. My mom said I would get up close to the tv and try and look in his pockets to see what he had. It was my favorite show when I was child. Thanks for the memories and thanks for sharing.

During most of its run, the show featured live actors and puppets, for example his neighbor Mr. Greenjeans (Live) Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit (Puppets). Bunny Rabbit was a constant source of havoc as his part of the show. Bob Keeshan did, in fact, love children but thought little of the programming offered to them and, hence, created Captain Kangaroo to be a better alternative. What's little known is that during WWII, Sgt. Bob Keeshan was a serious badass, loved by his men and feared by the enemy and known, or at least reputed to be, personally fearless. I used to really enjoy watching his show when I was little.

Thank you for my first look at Captain Kangaroo in decades. He was part of my childhood, back in the early 1960s. I actually hated when Mr. Moose would surprise him with a ping-pong ball dump. It reminded me too much of mean kids at school, who laughed at me, while I cried. That cost me 30 years' clinical depression, and any chance at a family of my own. But mostly Captain Kangaroo was good memories. And my life is much better, now. Stay safe.

My years of "capn' roo" as we called him was late 60's into the 70's. I was 4-7. My sister was 2 years older and watched it every morning before school. Before i started attending school i would watch captain kangaroo, sesame street, mr rogers neighborhood, and the electric company that had morgan freeman as a character. Saturday morning was cartoons. I was up at 6 watching them all. Usually by myself, followed by a baseball game in the afternoon.

The regular cast members that I remember are Mr. Green Jeans, Grandfather Clock, Dancing Bear, Mr. Moose, Bunny Rabbit and the Banana Man. The daily cartoon show that was shown during the time that I watch Captain Kangaroo was Tom Terrific. As a child in Canada in the 60’s I also grew up watching the Captain, but we had our own beloved children’s shows as well. One was Mr. Dressup with Ernie Coombs. Ernie started as an assistant puppeteer with Fred Rogers and came to Toronto with him in 1963 to do a show at the CBC. When Rogers went back three years later, Coombs stayed here with his own show and never left. The other was probably the most beloved Canadian children’s show in history, The Friendly Giant. It actually began in the U.S. but went to the CBC. The Giant lived in a castle and was always visited by Jerome the Giraffe and Rusty the Rooster. It ran from 1958 to 1985 with over 3,000 episodes.

I'm from Alabama. I often get told that I don't sound like I'm from here (I do. I sound like I'm from Birmingham) because I'm well spoken and have a good vocabulary. I also have countless public speaking, writing and acting awards. I attribute all of this to my parents plopping me down in front of Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Mr. Rodgers and Captain Kangaroo. Those shows taught me to speak, to reason, to empathize and helped place me in an accelerated elementary school program. I later got into a special high school for advanced arts learning. I totally think it was being addicted to these programs. They even taught me to read early. God bless PBS.
