Diane Jennings 10. Yes : if you go to malls ( shopping stores ) the biggest size they have is a size 6 ( I’m a SIZE 18 ) 9. Not necessarily it depends on where you’re going ( I’m less maintenance so I split ) 8. Lower maintenance is just a term that means girls in America ( except for me )spend a lot of money on makeup 7. Yep 6. There’s such a thing as a backhanded compliment so it depends 5. Ur right I respond better to humor 4. Yes, just tell me what you need I don’t need you to beat around the BUSH 3. It’s a racial thing but just don’t 2. We are more direct 1. It takes me more time to mentally prepare for things (I’m naturally tan and I take 10 minutes and I got crooked teeth )
American Dude here: I always took "high maintenance" as meaning a lot of work to keep someone happy, whether it’s attention, gifts, taking them out on the town, etc. Chilling at home, or spending alone time to unwind after a long day is verboten in the High Maintenance world.
For a description of high vs low maintenance women watch When Harry Met Sally. It’s when they are watching Casablanca together while chatting on the phone. There’s a call back to Sally’s ordering of food.
High maintenance usually means that the woman has very high demands for material things. It can include cars, type of home, high end clothing, etc. they do not care about the cost involved in maintaining that lifestyle. It's about a social status to them
As an American, I agree with this answer the most. Time women spend on their appearance can also be included, but that time typically is associated with a monetary value. Examples: "she spent 3 hours at the salon" or "she goes to the tanning bed 4 days a week" or "the shampoo she bought was $50 for a pint size bottle"
@@Luscombag Yes, the OP and this combined... She will spend more money on makeup, clothes, and self care, and eventually you may be expected to pick up the cost of some of this, she does expect more attention as Diane says, she will take forever to get ready when you go some place, and you will be waiting on her because she cannot go out without "getting ready", you may have to do certain things for her, because she'll be afraid of breaking a nail, etcetera
This pretty much says it . It’s more of a observation to marriage , I think . Looks real good , but do you want to be tasked with that maintenance? And maybe you do if that’s what you put value in . Inner value is far more lasting ! The older you both get the more maintenance it’s gona take to maintain that out word facile
Saying a girl is “high maintenance” in America basically means *expensive* for the man. She expects/demands high end food/clothes/etc in order to remain happy. Only rich guys are ok with dating high maintenance women I generally think about that term as a put-down. Like calling someone shallow or selfish.
I don't see it as just about money. When I think high-maintenance for a male or female I think what they kids call "extra". Like... having a quiet night at home watching Netflix is never going to happen, or the kind of significant other who needs constant text updates or gets really angry when you hang out with your friends, I guess money plays a huge part but there's other things as well, IMO anyway
It's definitely a combination between what Airehcaz said and the amount of time you also need to put in. I agree that typically the term is used in a negative way.
I believe i am high maintenance and i dont think that has anything to do with money or being roudy...it just means needy. Whether thats attention, “stuff” or approval. It could be needy in almost anyway.
@@britanysingelyn6195 Have you ever dated or married a guy that turned cart wheels just to get you and then afterwards turned into another person? They turn into a couch potato or running with the boys. I'm sure that's the same for a woman too. Marriage or a relationship takes work and time and if they don't want to give it then you don't want them.
American culture has to do more with chivalry, it's an old English concept that men should be seen as providers, so we tend to express this by paying for a ladys' dinner.
To be honest, I think I've experienced more chivalry when I'm in Ireland, money aside. People aren't afraid to help you get your luggage up or down, open doors, all sorts of things that guys here don't offer to do anymore
@@LindaC616 We also don't want to be seen as creepers, and often times if I'm near a woman who's struggling with something physical and offer to help, I get a "fuck off". Other times, they're a bit grateful, I help, and I go on my way. It's iffy. I know it depends on what the lady has experienced prior, and she could have bad reactions based on prior abuse of some sort, so I don't take any of it personally.
Alan Harris Sorry for the times you’ve gotten a “Fuck off” in exchange for your kindness. That’s a bit extreme & harsh. I can tell you, though, women kind of always have to be a bit on guard & suspicious. There’s so many creeps out there & if you show yourself to need help or be vulnerable, it’s like putting a target on your back. Glad you don’t take it personal & you’re awesome for trying to be helpful!
I was laughing at that too!!! So funny and random. Like you wouldn't want a really dead bored face in the shot when you are doing all of the talking. He was like, "... I just CAN'T EVEN,...." Hilarious!!! And it got funnier and funnier the longer you were talking. Because he was definitely paying attention the whole way thru,.... just in a dead bored posture doing it.
From my perspective, American women are harder to categorize because the country is so big. Women from the northeast are very different from women in the south and both are different from women on the west coast. I'd see midwestern women are probably the closest thing we have to Irish women but again they are very different than the other groups.
In American slang “high maintenance” can also just mean you get your hair and nails done a lot and wear a lot of makeup. That you require physical upkeep that’s expensive.
When I married my wife she was low maintenance but once I started making more money she became very high maintenance. It takes a whole staff of make up artists, hair stylist, hair colorist, blow dry specialist as well as an army of dermatologists and other doctors to make her look good for herself. Now she has to have a new fancy new foreign cars to drive, a no limit budget for purses, shoes, jewelry, clothes and multiple exotic vacations at only the most expensive hotels. We also have on daughter who I love dearly but was raised from birth to be high maintenance. I will never be able to retire because my maintenance costs are so high!
Your “American women are better groomed” goes hand in hand with “American women are high maintenance”. In America “high maintenance” women tend to spend a lot more time and money on clothing and cosmetics, including things like Botox or other cosmetic procedures through a doctor. They are more of the “me, look at me, pay me attention” culture, especially the younger crowd. Not me, I’m to old for that, different generation. Remember, this is just my observational opinion.
We have hollywood and fashion shoved in our faces from a young age. Magazines just tell you how to fix things you didn't even know needed to be fixed only to make you end up hating yourself even more. That's why teens in america have such a high rate of self harm and eating disorders. So we feed into this culture we didn't realise until it's too late only to be labeled fake or high maintenance when it's our cultural society that pressures us into it in the first place. I've worked jobs where I was required to have my nails manicured, hair done and makeup along with wear what ever clothes were trending. And that was just clothing stores.
“High maintenance” refers to how much money a girl spends on things like make-up, hair, nails, new clothes, massages, etc. Some girls don’t spend that much on such item each month and they would be termed “low maintenance”. Those that go for weekly manicures & pedicures and hair appointments, buy lots of new clothes, got to have the newest of everything etc are called “high maintenance”.
I think it's one thing if a woman spends her own time and money on her "maintenance" - it's only a problem if she's expecting other people (like family, boyfriend, husband, etc.) to foot the bill for this.
The anger thing? So accurate. I’d much rather have a small tiff frequently and know where I stand than for a girl to lose it over something and stay violently angry at me for two weeks.
American girl here 2 drink limit for me and I nurse those drinks. Started answering other comments, but then it started sounding like a dating add. 😄😄😁😂
The Irish woman in my life was my grandmother, she left me with an indelible image on the Irish female attitude,"DO AS I TELL YA, OR IT'S THE BACK OF ME HAND YOU'LL BE FEELIN ACROSS YOUR FACE!" That's one reason why I married an English girl.
Hello from TEXAS! Just subscribed today after binge watching about 15 of your vids. Keep up the entertaining work and come back soon! We miss you so much it hurts!! 🤠
It's not just a southern thing. Although I imagine it's better received, I often get strange/dirty looks, holding doors or standing when a lady enters for example. It's a lost code.
@@burtmacklin6443 I have noticed that usually the younger, more urban crowd and the people who moved to the South from the north or west coast get pissy when you're polite to them. Born-and-bred Southern women, on the other hand, will literally stand there in front of a door looking at you until you open it for them lol.
I'm not sure that it's so much the coupon as the Dairy Queen, lol! If there's a nice dinner, I am perfectly cool with a coupon for Dairy Queen for dessert. But having dinner at Dairy Queen? Nah, bro, you have to save that for 3 years into the relationship! 😆
@@LindaC616 Nah bra, if the first date has to be at a high end steak house (or vegan raw foodie thing), that's the start of a high maintenance relationship. If the first date is a fun date that peripherally involves Dairy Queen after other fun activities, that's a low maintenance relationship.
I think that what they mean is hair cuts, getting your nails done, facials, spa days, that is what I as a American would think that they would mean if they said, she's high maintenance, she requires alot to keep up appearances
Thank you for doing these videos, I'm actually learning a lot about myself from you. I'm American but my heritage is about half Irish. I find myself relating much more to the Irish side of your comparisons between Irish and American even though I've lived in America my whole life. Very interesting
With her blue eyes, shapely nose, flowing hair and quick, genuine smile. As long as she has a body (with all of its original parts), any man would be lucky to see it.
I just Love the Irsh accent, your accents are just So attractive, I wish I could find and Irish girl or Galway girl around here in the US, but love your videos Diane
High maintenance. Watch the movie, "when Harry met Sally" it explains it in the movie. Being low maintenance is a good thing in guys eyes. The grooming thing goes slipping with high maintenance.
Diane may I start off by saying, #6 I love the videos you make, and Chewie is a BLAST. Speaking for myself on paying for everything on a date. That is the way I was raised. The man always pays. I just came across your channel today and have watched a few of them. So part of this post will also be for previous videos. When the scare is lifted and we can all go back to a semi-normal life. Please do plan to come back to America. IF you do stop in North Carolina we can show you around and even take you skydiving if you want. When you do decide to come back let us all know on your site and then say the following... "Where should I go and Why?" You will find a lot of people here willing to help and play tour guide for you. Something to think about. Great Videos and keep up the good work.
"Have you ever seen the Seagulls ah flin' over heather or the crimson sails on Goey Bay the fisherman unfurl? The Earth is filled with beauty and it's gathered all together, in the form and face and dainty grace of a Pretty Irish Girl." Oh....She is my dear my darling one, her eyes so sparking full of fun, no other, no other could match the likes of her, etc, etc"... Cheers!
"High maintenance" is a euphemism for "difficult and demanding." "Low maintenance" is a euphemism for "easygoing." Re fake tan, realize that its heyday in America was 20 years ago. It has since become a cliche and now is frowned upon. Whereas the "pale pasty potato" look is actually in here; it's considered exotic and sexy. The grooming move for a pale-skinned woman in America now is not to get a tan - it's to stay pale (or even wear powder) and dye her hair red like Christina Hendricks or Jessica Chastain.
The needing attention is definitely part of maintenance, but I've always thought of high maintenance as including the paying for all dates, gifts on holidays and for random reasons, and all the drama. Since you specifically mentioned that splitting the bill on dates, that moves Irish women into the lower maintenance sphere.
My Russian friend who was in Germany at the time, was happily surprised I paid for everything when we were together. That is just one of the cultural differences that makes life fun.
Oh man, I kinda want to hear how bad the women tear apart the men now that you've opened up Pandora's Box hahaha. This was fun! Thanks and happy Monday!
Just in case...Before I even watch any of your Videos, I hit like first...as not forget too. What I'm trying to say is,,,,I enjoy all of your Vids. Cheers for that and Craic on!
To me, high maintenance means they have to have the best of everything. It’s easy to get the woman to pay, just leave your money at home. 😂 Nice list! ❤️U🍀🇺🇸🇮🇪
High maintenance is more than just attentiveness, it's being financially, emotionally, psychologically, physically, and otherwise taxingly drained with a huge dose of drama to round it all off with. It's like being owned, and not in a fun way.
My interaction with Irish women consist of 2 young ladies that I watch on RU-vid. Hard to make any rational judgments based on that. Oh well, back to the video.
I like three Irish ladies of RU-vid... two of which have been handcuffed together on one of their videos 😉. That being said, I think these 3 amazing young ladies are among the best of their generation while their moms are among the best of that generation for raising them as well as they have.
How about a video comparing and contrasting the overall American bar versus the Irish pub experience? Thanks for making these videos - they really help me take my mind off the shelter in place stir craziness!
Diane High maintenance woman in America refers that a lady expects the guy to pay for everything whether it's the 1st date or marriage. A high maintenance lady will expect a man to buy expensive items typically eat at expensive restaurants($300 or greater meal), demands $$$$$ jewelry/shoes/clothes/house/vacations Bora Bora, New Zealand, Rome, Paris/cars etc.
"American vs Irish Men" video? Yes, please. 2:35 "Potato body," says the Irish girl. 😂 "High maintenance" vs "low maintenance" - Dating some women is a full-time job. It's not just _paying attention,_ it's a constant requirement to provide affirmation, reassurance, and reinforcement. It's also a spectrum: rather than a binary: "higher" vs "lower" rather than "high" vs "low" maintenance.. 8:30 American women don't merely _hold_ grudges, they caress and fondle and cherish and *nurture* their grudges. If you seriously piss an American woman off, *she will never forget.* In my experience.
When I was in middle school I was a trumpet player in Jazz band. I was usually given the solos. One concert after the show, my Dad came up and told me how great I sounded. I proceeded to tell him about the mistakes I made. He told me that the next time just say thank you because he'd never have known about my mistakes if I hadn't said anything.
In regards to taking a compliment: I used to have a really difficult time doing that until I had a boyfriend say that when you discount a compliment from someone it offends them. As if you were telling them they don't have very good taste. It was uncomfortable at first but I did learn to just start saying thank you after a while and leaving it there
My Irish girl stereotype: all Irish women talk with a very hot accent. My American girl stereotype: university educated American women want the three sixes: 6 feet tall, 6 figure income, and have a six-pack.
At my local WalMart in New Orleans, the butter selection was very poor.... a lot of empty spaces on shelves.... BUT they had KerryGold and I bought it because I have heard you praise it! I look forward to trying it out soon! :)
What I think high maintenance means; it means you got to do a lot to keep up your looks (manicures, pedicures, lashes, waxing, botox, fat freezing, laser hair removal, facials, haircuts, hair extensions, hair dyeing, hair masks, not to mention all the skincare and makeup) idk is it just me😂
So, the maintenance thing is kind of like your take on easygoing for the guys. I watched that video before this one because I just found your channel and have been binge watching it haha. Anyway, a high maintenance woman doesn't just require lots of attention, but she also wants you to take her to the fanciest places, buy her expensive gifts, etc.
I cannot vouch for the validity of this list because you, Diane are really the only Irish girl I know, and that is only from the internets. I do agree that people of both genders are more body conscious in warmer climates where they generally wear less. From my limited experience, many European women don't expect a guy to pay on the 1st date. Was it a cloudy day there, and the sun kept coming going out and then going behind clouds? The lighting there seemed to be fading in and out for a lot of the video. It was not distracting, this is another wonderful video. I have noticed you take compliments better. Thank you for doing all that you do.
I love when you say "Potatoe bodies" 😂😂😂 I'm not sure about all those facts 'cuz I never go to the US or Ireland (North or South) but one thing is for sure (TO ME 😉) I love Irish accent 😍 your voice sounds like heaven to me 😊 well I tell you almost in every post I made. Anyway hugs and stay safe Diane🍀 lots of love from Argentina 🍷 #LoveYourVoice PD: Irish and Aussie accents are my favs on the English lenguage "variants". In the Spanish happend the same some people loves the Spanish other preffer the Venezuelan accent, the Cuban, Argentinian, Chilean or any other latin speaking country. Anyway bye 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
high maintenance means: needs hair done, nails done, fancy shoes, lots of fancy make up, lots of expensive shoes and clothes, never see her without fully being done up / Low maintenance means: doesn't need much, happy the way they are, wears little to no make up, wears sneakers, can be fancy but generally isn't everyday
My definition of high maintenance. Wearing makeup all the time, having your hair done, and dressing up all the time. No slack days (wearing sweatpants while eating a bag of chips and ice cream on the couch). Expecting the best shoes, cloths, makeup, etc as gifts. Ecpecting the best of everything all the time.
If you want to know what high maintenance is, watch the movie “When Harry Met Sally”. There is a great scene that explains it all. by the way, paying your own way is definitely low maintenance.
