@mikhaelamann.1810
@mikhaelamann.1810 4 года назад
Some Dude They could, however, a lot of terms we use that they consider is “American English” actually migrated from the Brits themselves. Their slang changed over time because the loyalist went back to Great Britain and the people who wanted to stay in the US, stayed in the US. As that statement stands, it is good to note that the geographical separation of the two countries made changes to the english slang. (this may be inadequate information, idk this is just stuff i have gathered from observation) If that statement doesn’t make sense, basically what i’m saying is that some words that us Americans use, were historically used first, and that the British changed some of those same words, while Americans kept using the original terms. (wow i just did a whole comment about something idk that much about, i’m in 8th grade so i only get to learn about the history of my state.)

@dans3.macabre
@dans3.macabre 4 года назад
@Jonathan Parks Well actually it IS more my language than yours because we originated it. You can speak it but in order to speak it properly you need to use our version. The same as you wouldn't change the French language because it doesn't belong to You, don't change the English language because it isn't yours. Just because you have British ancestry also doesn't automatically make you British same as having Italian ancestry doesn't automatically make you Italian.

This conflict is stupid and petty. There is no “proper” English. Even within the UK, there are varying accents, phrases, slang, etc. depending on the region you come from. The modern English language spoken in the UK today is not identical to the English language people spoke hundreds of years ago or even decades ago. Language is constantly evolving.
@dans3.macabre
@dans3.macabre 4 года назад
But it's quite clear that given we originated the language that it is our version that is the truest and most correct form of the language.
@artistfloor9
@artistfloor9 4 года назад
Cole Mclaren - Except you don’t speak the same way as the people who originated the language. You think you're speaking the "pure" form of English, but the reality is the language you're familiar with has evolved over hundreds of years to become what it is today, including branching off into different dialects. Even if you disregard other countries, who in the UK gets to lay claim to the title of "true English?" Do Scottish people not speak true English? Which accent is the true English accent? What purpose does it serve to insult millions of people by telling them their language is incorrect? You’re not going to change the way Americans or Canadians or Australians speak. You’re not going to convince them to stop referring to their language as "English." You're not going to stop the language from continuing to evolve.
@dans3.macabre
@dans3.macabre 4 года назад
@@artistfloor9 Trust me you ask any patriotic Scot and they'll tell you "I speak Scottish not English" because actually we Scots did have our own language, funnily enough called Scots. A lot of us didn't speak Gaelic contrary to popular belief, only the western and northernmost regions of Scotland did because they were closer to Ireland. Scots was an amalgamation of anglo-saxon and English from what linguist can tell. But we don't call it English, we call it Scottish because it's different from English the same as American English is different. As far as I can tell Australian English is really quite the same as British English with the addition of a few slang terms. Americans literally changed the spellings of words because the cost of ink was too high to have the "u" in colour and armour. Not to mention you don't distinguish between biscuits and cookies, the Australians and other English speaking countries of that region for the most part do. And that's only naming very few changes they've made because I don't have the time to list all the contextual differences (certain words are used in different contexts e.g. rubber in England means earaser in America and rubber in America means condom). As to who has most claim to the language, people born in England today have most claim, primarily the Queen has most claim to the language because she is the monarch of the commonwealth including Britain which is where the language originated.

supposedly both England and the colonies had a similar accent that was closer to the typical American accent where we pronounce our r's but over time, the middle and upper class of England began not pronouncing those r's so as to show their social status, creating what is seen as the typical British accent. Add in the fact that the colonists interacted with numerous different countries, and therefore, cultures over time and its no wonder that we are different with our slang, though Americans do use British slang from time to time.

@natj8675
@natj8675 5 лет назад
@@williamryder8497 You're almost there. They weren't known as JUST Soccer and Rugger. It was called Football in the first place, when peasants and freemen played it on the streets in medieval times. In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was founded. It was called "Football". At the same time, another group also set up a foundation for football, but in the rules it said that using your hands was okay. Since there were two different groups with the same name, they named them "Soccer Football" and "Rugger Football". Since Rugger Football has become Rugby, and the "Football" ignored pretty much all the time, there is no need for "Soccer" before "Soccer Football". Just taking that, it seems that Americans, Canadians, South Africans, Namibians, Botswanans, Zimbabweans, Australians, New Zealanders and Papuans are about 100 years too late for calling Football Soccer.

Caitlyn Cottam It’s not from “England” it’s a Germanic language which had strong roots to the German language before the battle of Hastings in 1066. No such thing as “proper English”

@@troelembiid6970 This is going to annoy a lot of people. In 1937 the ‘First Head Of The Commonwealth’ King George VI established ‘Proper English’ via his two famous speeches at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The document named “Proper English Never To Be Changed” was entered into the royal archives soon after. Proper English as it were only applied to the Commonwealth Countries and still does. Other than England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand there are approx. 54 other countries, dominions, republics etc that use their own version of the English language as their first language. The English language is mostly Germanic and Latin.

@Rosida Andriyana You're wrong. Two-thirds of the language came from French, which is a Latin language. There is Germanic influence (via the Saxons) on our grammar and some of our vocabulary, but most words derive from Latin via French.

English was created by Germanic tribes, who then brought it to England. Not to mention, Americans have the traditional British accent. People from England adapted the modern British accent to differentiate between the upper and lower classes.
