The Irish Guards seem a bit of an enigma. 35% of them are recruited from Dublin, Cork, Galway & Limerick, and another large chunk of them are from the Irish diaspora or of Irish Catholic heritage, from cities elsewhere in the UK. And yet here we have a group of loyalists in the Guards playing a presumably loyalist Protestant tune, which I understand is also on their official playlist for ceremonial duties. At the same time they also play Let Erin Remember, which clearly has connotations with the Irish Catholic identity, and Whiskey in the Jar, in which the hero is the highwayman and the villain is the British military official whom he robs. They recruit also from the north, and there is no barrier to anyone anywhere in Ireland of GB signing up; they celebrate St Patrick’s Day, wear the shamrock, and attend Mass before deployment (sometimes during.) Seems like a strange combination of opposing sentiments, but as far as I can tell they have excellent discipline and morale.
