Great video, thanks for giving us the opportunity to see this. Mr Baton was injured trying to film this for us so it’s not a hazard free pass time! Delvin will be along very shortly to give us the titles of the marches, I have nowhere near the confidence! Vicky will be delighted, as am I , to see SDM Chambers leading the way with his customary expertise and due reverence, saluting as he passes the Guards Chapel. The band are superb, despite the foul weather trying to drown them and all the participants in the parade. Thanks to all involved either side of the camera👍

isn't it a requirement it rains on St Patrick's Day parade though?

Fantastic video! The Band sounded brilliant! The marches played were, 1) 0:01-Rhythm of the Line (12 co. Irish Guards Drums and Pipes) 2) 2:27-Fare Ye Well Inniskilling 3) 3:04-Kelly the Boy from Killane 4) 3:38-The Minstrel Boy 5) 4:15-The Sash My Father Wore (Band of the Irish Guards) 6) 4:54-If You're Irish & Begorrah 7) 6:11-St. Patrick's Day

I’ve learned that I can rely on you for these details, but have no idea how you do it! And I have a question! Please can you explain the different type of drums and how the different sounds are achieved at 3:07 and 4:51 ? I just know you’ll have the answer😎

@@AnnofWales21 Hello Ann! Always happy to help! There's a few types of Drums used in the Bands and Drums & Pipes. Let's start with the Band. The Band has two types of Drums, the most important one is the Bass Drum which is the Biggest Drum in the Band. This is what the Time-Beater uses to keep everyone in step and in time. He is also in charge of signaling the Band with various Beats as to when to stop playing (Cut-Offs), start playing, Mark Time, or raise and lower their Volume. These signals can vary from one large beat, to two quick large beats for Cut-Offs. The Time-Beater always pays attention to the Drum majors Staff. As the Drum Major signals, the Time-Beater gives the signal to the rest of the Band via Drum Beats to execute the Drum majors command. The second and the smallest Drum in the Band is the Snare Drum seen at 4:51 , these are there to add to the music, they are also very important as they do the 5 pace rolls at the start of every march. These are made by Pearl, they are the Pearl Viscount Series Snare Drums. As for the Pipes and Drums, they have two types of Drums as well, the large Bass Drum. Which also has the same job as the one in the Band, is used to keep everyone in step and in time. The smaller Drums seen at 3:01 are High Tension Snare Drums, these sound different as they are Tensioned higher than most snare drums thus they have a higher sound. They also have more Tensioning rods, as opposed to the Bands Snare Drums which is an easy way of identifying them. High Tension Snare drums are only ever used in Pipe Bands, at least that's the tradition in the British Army! Unlike here in the USA where they are seen in Woodwind Bands. I jokingly always say that American Military Bands that used High Tension Snare Drums sound like someone is beating on a plastic table! Hope this helps!

@@delvinrodriguez3341 thanks ever so much Delvin, beautifully explained. How heavy are those big bass drums? I don’t suppose they’re as heavy as they look but it must be quite awkward sometimes not being able to see what’s in front of your feet!
@delvinrodriguez3341
@delvinrodriguez3341 3 месяца назад
@@AnnofWales21 Glad I was able to answer your questions! The Pearl Viscount Bass Drums are around 9kgs (20lbs). Not the most "heaviest" of things, until you wear it for a long Parade. The smaller snare Drums weigh are 5.9kgs. Much less hindering to the shoulder.

Last Years Irish Guards Black Sunday Parade, Musical Support was Provided by The Band of the Household Cavalry & The Pipes & Drums of the Irish Guards. SDM Gareth Chambers MVO, Marched with The Veterans of The Irish Guards in Mufti & can be seen Marching into Barracks as the Man Furtherest from Camera in the Last Rank of the Parade. This Years Parade "Feels" Much Better with The Band of The Irish Guards Marching & So does "Seamus". An Incredible Job by Both Bands in very Difficult Conditions. Take a Bow People! It's always Special when the Regiment's Old Boys March, it's Clear to see They most Certainly Still Have it! Thank you Gentlemen, for your Past Service & your Pride in the Regiment. God Bless. Finally, Thank you To Mr Military Events, for Braving the Elements so that we can be Part of it all. I really think you should retire to Somewhere Warm & Dry & Partake of a little Something to Keep Colds & Flu away.

Given the conditions, this was a video of perseverance all round. Everyone looks to be near soaked and those waterlogged bearskins must have weighed a tonne. Nevertheless, sporting sprigs of shamrock in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day, the parade made it back to Wellington Barracks in resolute style. (And in keeping with tradition, officers' umbrellas remained furled!) Whatever the weather, selections from the Band of the Irish Guards' great fund of regimental tunes never disappoint. Thanks!

Great video once again! Sounding well despite the conditions. I can somewhat sympathise as my own band got a few heavy soakings last year including Remberance Sunday and it is tough going especially sight reading if you are wearing glasses but thankfully we don't wear bearskins, they must have been a ton weight
@vickyRoyalHistory
@vickyRoyalHistory 2 месяца назад
Hi Reggie, Hope you are well. Your Comment re the Bearskins Started me Thinking, just how heavy they are when Wet. So I did some Digging. Dry Weight of a Bearskin is around 1.5 lbs or about 7kg. When they are Wet depending on How Wet & the Rate of Absorption, they are anything from 3lbs - 5lbs in Weight. Interestingly, there are still a Few Synthetic ones around, leftovers from when the MOD trialled Alternatives to Real Bearskins. Not only did they not look Right, they were actually Heavier in weight when they were Wet than the Real Article. That's because Mother Nature created Bearskin with it's own Water Repelling Properties. Even when Submerged, the Bearskin Full of Water weighs much less than an Imitation one does. The Imitation ones start gaining weight as soon as it's exposed to Water. The Bearskins tend to be no heavier until they're Exposed to much Heavier Rain owing to their Natural Repellent Properties.

@@vickyRoyalHistory oh yes, I like the ‘elegance personified’ too. Nothing clumsy about this DM! What was that Carly Simon song? Yep, “Nobody Does it Better”! You know, I hope he never reads all this praise as I fear there wouldn’t be a large enough bearskin to fit over his head! But at the same time I get the impression it’s not a performance put on for onlookers, it’s a determined dedication to honour the role to the best of his ability and to compliment the professional musicians and soldiers following on behind. The swagger is a very nice added extra🥰

@vickyRoyalHistory 3 месяца назад
@@AnnofWales21 Hi Ann! Carley Simon did a version, Yes but She also did a Song, which became her Signature Song, "You're So Vain", so I tend not to use her for Quotes. 😅😂🤣 6 Months ago, if someone expressed the Hope that none of the Musicians or DMs would read the RU-vid Comments, I would've said No, No worries on that Score, but now I know different. I've exchanged Comments with Several Musicians Currently Serving in the Bands, 3 People who were in the Bands in the last 3 Years & still have "Mates" in the Bands, 2 Current DMs & the Father of a Musician in the Band of the Welsh Guards. Not to mention some people who have Changed something that I've Commented on. To the Best of my Knowledge, SDM Gareth Chambers isn't even aware that there are RU-vid Channels where People Comment about him but I think it Highly Unlikely that some of the Current Bandsmen, at least 2 I know in the Irish Guards Band, haven't taken the Opportunity to Tease him Over Some of the Comments made about him. If that's the Case, I hope he gets a Good Laugh out of it!😁😄, from what I've heard about him from Some of the Channel Owners, he's a Really Nice Guy, with a Wicked Sense of Humour, So I doubt he'd be Offended or Puffed up in his Own Conceit. You are exactly Right about his Performances, they are just 1 Part of his Job as Senior Drum Major, having said that, I don't think it's Just a "Job" to him, I think it's a way of Life. He doesn't do his DM Performance for the Spectators, although he's aware that they're there & I've seen him at times give a little Nod of acknowledgment to some, his Performance as a DM is more a Case of being the Best he can be, having the innate sense of Duty & Respect that He Obviously Has, I think he views what He Does as being Part of the Team Performance & he delivers his, to the Best of his Ability as an Extension of that Team Performance. It's not about him it's about doing the Best He Can, so the Whole Team Performance is the Best They Can Do. There's also the Pride of The Regiment to Consider. The Teams Always do Good.
