The first guy was Clint Malarchuk and he had his life saved that day by the Sabres athletic trainer Jim Pizzutelli. Pizzutelli had been an Army combat medic in Vietnam and he immediately pinched off Malarchuk's carotid artery until they could get him off the ice and the doctors got there and could start working on him.

I believe this is the reason all hockey goalies wear neck guards now. Was because of this indecent. I heard the other reason he lived besides pinching off the artery was that he was on the side the Medical facility was on so he was able to get treated right away.
@jacoblangford1092

@@dailygrind_games definitely why all goalies should unfortunately they aren't required to in most leagues this almost happend to my little brother cause at the time he wasn't wearing one got a skate to the neck and missed the artery by like a 1/16 of an inch. He wears one now but still should be a requirement like mouth pieces cause puck or skate to the neck has a good chance of seriously damaging you if not killing.

@@emmaduncan2991 Well, the worst injury someone survived that is. Bill Masterson died on the ice afterall, after he hit his head on the ice wearing no helmet. Also, Malarchuk was close do death but made a full recovery and played on in the NHL. Others who have less graphic injuries have had career ending injuries (Pronger, Savard, Forsberg etc), so you could always argue which is worst. The life threatening one who made a full recovery or the injuries that werent life threatening but stopped players from ever playing again.

The goalie, Clint Malarchuk, who got his neck slit by the skate survived. So did the other guy, Richard Zednik. Both could continue to play in NHL afterwards, Clint Malarchuk for almost 10 years and Richard Zednik played another 2-3 years in the NHL before changing leagues. The goalie that got hit in the head by the stick, Tomas Vokoun, had no internal damage done, and played another 4 years in the NHL. Steve Moore, the player who got sucker punched, played his first, and only, season in the NHL that year. The reason for the attack was because he gave a deliberate check to the head to the opposing teams captain in the last match between the two teams. Steve Moore broke his neck and got paralyzed immediately from his neck down. The guy who sucker punched, Todd Bertuzzi, got sentenced to 80 hours of community service and he played in NHL up to the 2014 season. Max Pacioretty, the guy who was pushed face first into the side of the glas, got a sever concussion and a damaged cervical vertebra from the hit. The player that pushed him in, Zdeno Chara, did not face a suspension. Both are still playing in the NHL today. Jannik Hansen, the player who collapsed on the bench, got no long lasting damage dealt to him. He got a concussion from the hit and, if my memory serves me right, he collapsed due to lack of oxygen (he got hit in the chest area first, punching the air out of him) and because of the concussion. I might be wrong on why he collapsed, but I think that was why.

Malarchuk getting his neck cut is easily the scariest injury I've seen on the ice, at least on a visual basis. It was shortly after this that a lot of minor leagues made neck guards mandatory. I still wish that it was a piece of gear needed in the NHL. Necks and blades don't mix. Also, injuries like these aren't a common occurrence. It's a rare event that you see something to this extreme.

If you’d like to be stoked instead of grossed out, do a reaction video of Top 10 NHL shootout goals. Far more pleasant for you to watch. Hahah To answer your question before you ask, shootouts occur at the end of a game to settle a winner if/when an overtime period produces no goal (overtime periods are “sudden death”, meaning, if a team scores at any time during the overtime period, that team wins and the game is over despite time remaining on the clock). I dig your videos man. Haha they’re funny. My wife is from Belfast btw and she’s a HUGE hockey fan. Our son plays and is obsessed as well. That Canadian and Irish blood mixes well for this game. I remember watching the Caps practice at Kettler 10 years ago when Brooks Laich broke his eye socket when he shot the puck and it came off the post into his face. The sound of the bones breaking was louder than the sound of the puck hitting the post. That was fckn creepy! Also remember during playoffs in 2010 when Eric Belanger took a stick to the face from Bergeron... went to the bench pulled out several teeth and got back on the ice after having basically a root canal between periods because some of the shattered teeth had roots hanging from them. Oh, and of course the stitches for his mouth. But just seeing him digging his fingers into his bloody mouth and setting teeth down on the bench next to him before any trainers got to him was pretty crazy. Hockey is the true blood sport.

The first video was from the video feed, the actual braodcast was on a different angle and that cameraman knew he was on the broadcast at that moment and did respond to the commentators request that he take the camera off Clint Malarchuk, he wasn't allowed to let the puck get out of the screen, but he was able to zoom out enough for the image to be indistinct. The goalie(Clint Malarchuk) was taken to the hospital, across the street from the arena, and his carotid arteries were re-attached. He was able to suit up and practice 6 days after losing nearly two liters of blood. Malarchuk's incident is why all goalies wear a plastic neck shield.
@TSandstrom30
@TSandstrom30 4 года назад
lazyidiotofthemonth They don't all wear neck guards in the NHL and that's not why they wear them. It's for pucks to the neck. A skate could still easily get under a neck guard because the angle. I had to wear a neck guard as goalie in high school in Minnesota and I hated it. They're so annoying.

@TSandstrom30
@TSandstrom30 4 года назад
lazyidiotofthemonth That can't be true that they're required because I see NHL goalies without them. And maybe that is why they started using them, but having played goalie and been required to use one it was always thought of as protection from pucks. I never even thought or heard of it being for protection from blades, and I've played and been around hockey my whole life. And they weren't even required until high school varsity in Minnesota, which would make more sense that's it's about pucks as obviously high school shots are harder than younger level shots. And if it was about blades it wouldn't make sense that they weren't required at younger levels. It just isn't a very effective way to prevent blade to neck injuries because a blade would be coming from underneath where the neck guard doesn't even cover. And I would still get pucks to the neck even with the guard because it moves around and there's still unprotected area depending on the angle of the puck and/or movement of the guard.

7:28 : yes I can explain this. The doctor isn’t on that side because there is just not enough room because there is trainers on the bench. The trainers are there for minor injuries like cuts but the doctors are for concussion, broken bones, heart attacks and players/goalies collapsing and stiff like that. The trainers aren’t just meant for cuts. They’re meant for twisted/ rolled ankles, minor dislocations and other minor/kinda serious injuries but not life threatening ones.

With the first incident Clint came back only 10 days later and he says that’s why he’s had such terrible mental health since. No support from the NHL back then. When the second incident happen with Richard almost 20 years it was a contributing factor Clint attempting suicide later that year (alongside undiagnosed ocd, ptsd, depression and anxiety) he survived and now is a great advocate for proper mental health services for players. Richard took the rest of the season off from his injury and returned the next season at least six months later. Crazy stuff.

Steve Moore made a dirty hit on Bertuzzi's team mate Marcus Naslund, injured him and there was no penalty called. It was Bertuzzi's job to remind Moore that you don't make dirty hits on stars. Bertuzzi went too far because Moore tried to run away and wouldn't fight. You should watch Don Cherry's Rockem Sockem videos, they are quite entertaining. Minimal gore.

ok, quick thing I don't think many people commented regarding the first clip, the old commercial thing was because the game was on tv, so they just went off the air and went straight to commercial so people at home wouldn't be seeing everything that's happening on the ice unlike those at the game that's why you could hear the music and the clip said old commercials on screen it was to let the viewers know why there was music playing. you did realize what was going on and your reaction was almost the same as mine the first time I watched the video.

A little more detail for the first 2, the jugular was partially cut for Zednik. For Malarchuk, it was severed (completely cut). Malarchuk was lucky that the physician was also ex-military, went into his next and pinched the artery until proper medical professionals came, literally saved his life. Both lived, thankfully

5:23 That hit by Todd Bertuzzi to the back of the neck is what costed him being suspended for like 10 seasons, upon going to the ground/ice the opposing player ended up landing on his neck as a result by being knocked out by Bertuzzi from the illegal punch to the back of the head (unsuspecting hit), which left the player paralyzed, it's why alot of people never liked playing against Bertuzzi, the guy was big and brutal, but he was later picked up by Detroit red wings around 2010 or 2012, but wasn't as overly aggressive when he came back to playing pro hockey, that hit is what almost completely ended his career with the NHL.

*For people wondering about the Steve Moore/Todd Bertuzzi incident:* In an earlier game Steve Moore injured Canucks team captain, Markus Näslund, resulting in a concussion and elbow injury. Naslund was the league's leading scorer at the time and many felt Moore's actions were disrespectful and was even described as "a marginal player going after a superstar with a headhunting hit." Retaliation was inevitable and in hockey it's fairly common. In a rematch 5 days later it was obvious from the physicality throughout the game, the Canucks wanted justice for Moore's hit on their captain. After failing to instigate Moore to fight, Bertuzzi skated after Moore, grabbed his jersey and punched him in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. A brawl erupted but fighting died down as it became apparent that Moore was seriously injured. He suffered three fractured vertebrae in his neck, a grade-three concussion, vertebral ligament damage, stretching of the brachial plexus nerves, and facial lacerations. He was also suffering from amnesia. 2 days later Bertuzzi wept as he apologized to Moore and his family, the Canucks organization, his teammates, and the fans in an emotional press conference. Bertuzzi was suspended indefinitely. He was eventually reinstated after a 17 month suspension and forfieting almost $1 million in salary and endorsements. He was also later charged with "assualt causing bodily harm" facing over a year in prison. He pleaded guilty after a plea bargain was arranged. He was sentenced to 80 hours of community service and 1 year probation. Steve Moore then filed a lawsuit in Colorado courts against Bertuzzi, his teammates and the Canucks organization but it was thrown out with the judge ruling the case would better be suited for Canadian courts. Moore and his family then filed another lawsuit in Ontario seeking almost $70 million and later an out of court settlement was reached. Todd Bertuzzi last played for the Detroit Red Wings and retired in 2015. Ironically his nephew, Tyler Bertuzzi plays for Red Wings currently.

I was at the game with the puck to the eye. Scariest moment I’ve seen live in hockey. He got hit in the eye and he started kicking his legs I’m guessing out of pain. The arena went silent, and the players players cautiously for the next 5-10 minutes, which hardly ever happens. Crazy moment.
@curtisconaway8554

The pucks are actually kept frozen when not in use, making the rubber even harder than it already is. Broken Jaws, broken eye sockets, stitches in the locker room before coming back and finishing the game, concussions, completely paralyzed, etc... have all happened in hockey. Yet it is still the best sport on the planet, even though the players make considerably less money than all other major sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, Soccer/Football, and probably even the top Cricket players). These guys are some of the toughest guys on the planet.

My dad played hockey, when there was no requirement to wear helmets. If you tried to wear one your own teammates would regularly beat you so badly you would end up in hospital. It got to the point that they had to make it mandatory to wear them with stiff penalties if they didn't. That bit is why the lack of full face cover and throat protection still are not part of their gear.

The reason why doctors commonly have to cross the ice for a neck injury is per NHL rules and regs, the doctor is required to be seated behind the home team's bench at every game, so if the injury is on the visiting team, and that player goes back to their bench area, the doctor must cross from the home team side. Those doctors also are required to be trained in trauma care.

Necks dont get cut often. It happened in the 60s where the player died on the ice, the 80s with goalie Clint Malarchuk (1st clip and lived) and in 2009 with Richard Zednik (2nd clip and lived). This is the reason they dont wear neck guards. It doesnt happen often and the guards dont ensure safety. Zedniks injury was above the area protected by neck guards.
