Dean "Deanie" O'Banion (July 8, 1892 - November 10, 1924) was an Irish-American mobster who was the main rival of Johnny Torrio and Al Capone during the brutal Chicago bootlegging wars of the 1920s. The newspapers of his day made him better known as Dion O'Banion, although he never went by that first name. He led the North Side Gang until he was murdered by Frankie Yale, John Scalise and Albert Anselmi in 1924.

Man only lived to 32 and led a life of crime and murder yet he will be remembered more than me or indeed my mum who worked hard for 50yrs and stayed out of trouble or indeed 99.9% of people here. The world we live in where we celebrate warlords like Alexander and not those who built his cities. Still, a fine vid and very informative, they all are. :)

We spell it Dion, but its pronounced "Dean" not the way it looks. For example Sean is "shawn," Eoghan is "Owen" etc. in other words, its spelled differently than it sounds. And what I mean by other people posting your videos is that I've searched for different mobster videos and found videos you've made posted up by different you tubers as if they're taking credit for the creation of your videos. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I'm very old and not privy to this whole you tube thing.

No, that is Déan. Same pronunciation, but a slightly different enunciation. O'Banion himself HATED the misnomer "Dion" and said he'd love to get ahold of the person who came up with that spelling and error. According to him, "It makes me sound like a guinea". Idk if someone lied to you or youre making it up, but its wrong.

+Roy Johnson Roy, I appreciate the videos too and am a believer in Jesus. I don't idolize organized crime,but it is part of our history in this country. It's a group of people who have different values and ways about them that thankfully are different than the way the majority has. Some of these men could have done so much more with their lives and been a lot happier if their lives had gone different directions. It's actually quite sad when you hear about guys like Lucky Luciano whose family disowned him. Most of the families of these men are decimated. It had to be very difficult to live in this kind of life. They paid a huge price.

These little docs on gangsters are really good, and as I've read quite a bit about numbers of them, all the facts seem spot on. I know many of the very early violent big city gangs where almost always Irish, but were there any English or Scottish, Welsh or any other British origin street gangs in the early history of the US? You should do some longer ones on lesser known but key mobsters, like Madden. He is fascinating. I know Bob Hoskins played Madden in the Cotton Club, but Hoskins didn't look anything like the real Madden, and Madden spoke to his dying day with a soft Leeds accent, which would be interesting to see in a film! Cheers.

Dont forget "Nails" Morton. Apparently the character Nails Nathan in Cagney's "Public Enemy," gangster flick was a real dude. His real name was Samuel "Nails" Morton. A heavy weight in the Northside gang. He actually did get killed by a horse stomping on his head. Deanie saw him out with a lavish funeral procession full of thousands of dollars of flowers for the whole neighborhood to come watch and pay respects. A true mobsters send off, and classic Chicago gangland lore.

@Bloodlettersandbadmen
@Bloodlettersandbadmen 8 лет назад
+Robert .Hartley When it comes to the mob, sources always contradict. Ergo, unless blatant plagiarism is taking place no two articles ever have the same facts. But do pray tell, what inconsistencies have you found and share your sources.
@RobertHartleyGM
@RobertHartleyGM 8 лет назад
+Bloodletters & Badmen well the one that comes to mind first is the name, which you address here. Wikipedia, various RU-vid videos and a few movies and TV shows too all prove a little inconsistent on Dean, Deanie or Dion. But there's also dates of certain events and the order of events too, such as when he met certain associates, when he moved to Chicago and the details of his death as well. Was he shot four times standing and once more in the head while on the floor, was he shit six times standing? Obviously that specific a detail is understandably first to get lost to time but a few sources have said or shown it with such confidence that it makes one wonder. And finally, not so much an inconsistency but I've found often his limp is not mentioned at all; I'd be interested to know the truth if it and how bad it was for his mobility.
@Bloodlettersandbadmen
@Bloodlettersandbadmen 8 лет назад
The name is kind of weird in my opinion. During my research I tracked down a man in Maroa, IL who claimed to have lived next to a woman who went to school with O'Banion (by the way did you notice some will spell his name with 2 N's.) She told him some stories (none related to his later years in the mob) but they were unverified. As to his limp, I just didn't think it was that important to the narrative. If you plan on continued research, just remember to couch your language in probability. I believe it was Gus Russo in his book on the Outfit who completely discounts the story of the Seiben's Brewery raid.
@RobertHartleyGM
@RobertHartleyGM 8 лет назад
+Bloodletters & Badmen Thank you, I'll keep researching. One last thing I'm very interested in though, perhaps you know the answer, I've heard he had an 'Irish tenor' singing voice but was born and raised in Illinois. Do you happen to know what his accent was? Did he speak with a typical Chicago accent or did he pick up an Irish accent from his parents? I'm trying to find any real footage of him, other than photos to see how he moved but I know that even moving images of him wouldn't have sound of him back in the early 20s.
@Bloodlettersandbadmen
@Bloodlettersandbadmen 8 лет назад
I really do not know. I believe his parents were from Ireland. So he may have picked up the accent from them, But you are correct, everyone says he had an Irish tenor voice.

In most movies or tv show O'Bannion is portrayed as an asshole to lean the viewer more toward Al Capone and Torrio

the thing i never understand about this criminals are how they're so connected to each other. like him and torrio owned the same distillery. also greed kills these guys so often. like why challenge the south siders when you were making good money and just as feared as them? anyways great vid

+smith doe Thanks for the comment. And I have to agree. He had enough money. But I am guessing it wasn't enough for him just like with so many others.
@KretinoSantino
@KretinoSantino 8 лет назад
+smith doe You don't get from dirty broke cockroach on street corner to Torrio's or O'Banion's position by "having enough". All criminals just "wants more". Just like 99% of people. Difference is that they have capabilities & have set of parameters that allows them to do it the violent or risky way (suppression of conscience, fearlessness, attraction to power or fearsome reputation ...)
@HadToChangeMyName_YoutubeSucks
+its bill gates to you son. -- So Budweiser should just be happy with the market share it has and quit trying to sell more beer? And remember, even if one guy is fine with what he has he still has to hold on to it or the guy who wants more and the guys who have nothing and want something are going to take it from him, these are criminals after all.

97 years ago today November 10 th Deanie was killed in Chicago im a big of Jay Robert Nash for years I enjoy reading about the north side Gangsters in the twenty's my favorite are O'Banion and Weiss , O'Banion was only 32 when he was killed. Back in 1924 , I remember going by there only a parking lot is in place where his florist building stood most of the building where Mob people own are now parking lots i guess they don't want to rebuild in those areas from the past.

Dean was a good man. Widely respected, and very generous and charitable. He was the model Capone got the idea from to open soup kitchens, and pay peoples bail if they worked and had a family to support. Let the WASPs say what they will, he solved and enforced a lot of crimes the police either couldnt or wouldnt.

+Mark Ramsey Capone didn't hate the Irish. He was friends with numerous gangsters of that ethnicity. He hated people who had what he wanted. As to his wife, he was quoted once as saying Irish women make the best wives cause they don't mess around.

+Bloodletters & Badmen no problem, I believe alot was false. my big problem with his boasting is there were at least new jersey police officers and atf looking into him. and kuklinski killed at least 5 people. itd be nice if one of the LEO involved with his case would write a tell all or the least this "Phil solimene" his only friend he didn't kill. Robert Prongay was a hitman kuklinski spoke of, mr. softee ty for your time though. another mobster Frank Ballistreri might be good to check out
