This is the short patriotic movie that RTÉ used to play when they were shutting down for the night. Think it played in the late 70s or the Early to Mid 80's
I lived in Ireland from January 1991 to July of 1994 while studying at UCG (Now NUIG). I remember seeing this when TV went off the air for the night. Ahh what happy memories this brings back.
As much as I like the marching tempo of my country's anthem "Lupang Hinirang", "Amhran na bhFiann" is one of the best national anthems around. Greetings from the Philippines 🇵🇭
As a child (up to 18), I spent 2 or 3 holidays a year in Ireland with my Grandparents. These closing sequences of of RTE will live in my heart forever. This is my Ireland ... my Kilkenny ... my Heaven ...
The music is a little creepy alright. But, each to their own. Some Irish are religious nuts when it comes to the national anthem and nationalism. So the more overpowering the better for them. I think I made a better one myself, you can see it on my channel. I called it; "What-If 21st Century RTÉ Closedown (Kieran Griffith)"
Kieran Griffith It makes the hairs stand up in a good way. I think it is the best musical arrangement of the Irish national anthem I have ever heard - although I'll be sure to check out yours!
Although not Irish I love this National Anthem. I listened to RTE Radio 1 when it was on LW 567 KHz in the 90's. The last words before closedown the announcers usually said was "Oíche mhaith agus codladh sámh" (Goodnight and sleep well) and then played Amhrán na bhFiann a slightly faster version compared to this YT video
+Andrew Swift Almost everyone loves the Irish it is our duty to love everyone back. At the exponential rate that the population is increasing through immigration and the highest birthrate in Europe Ireland should have a population of 30 million by the end of the century. We have the only hardcore nationalist party in the world that is pro-immigration and Irish descendants live all over the world. If we were not welcoming new Irish with open arms from Poland, Nigeria, Brazil, China etc. We would be the biggest hypocrites on the planet. But you probably know all that already.
@Fíonán Murphy Yes, I guess so but, sadly, it's not as if the Saxon foe hasn't given you enough reason for those sentiments over the past eight centuries or so. Perhaps we should blame the Normans rather than the Saxons, as they seem to be at the root of the trouble. They gave us Saxons a hard time too and still do, in some ways, only nowadays they call themselves English and go to public schools. No names; we don't want to get political, do we?
How so very kind of of great neighbour in England..as We are great neighbours..lived in the UK for 15 yrs & always treated with such great english kindness manners & great respect..& working in business 5here & here,we here have much to learn re: integrity...Thank ypu England for all your open Kindness to strangers as Me.! I remember being back home and when the anthem was played at the end of the night, it didn't matter how pissed people were they always stood and sang it.!!
Ah this brought back a happy/sad memory of my son begging to be left up to see 'the butterfly Daddy' all grown up and his own kids now. Where did the years go?
That's so funny. When I was young my brother and sister and I would beg our Mam & Dad to be left up to see 'the cobwebs' before bed! 😁 They always did.
This is surely the best version of our national anthem. I loved it growing up when RTE closed at night. It was less militaristic and more lyrical. A credit to who I presume was the then RTE Symphony Orchestra. I miss it sorely from TV but a pleasure to still have it here.
Brings back memories of a time in Ireland when people had less but were happier with their lot, a time when people were kinder to each other and people had more time and respect for each other. I remember watching the anthem signaling the close of another day and feeling a lump of pride in my throat as i listened and watched this beautiful video capturing the beauty of our amazing little country.
I remember going, with my then new British girlfriend, to an Irish language cultural festival circa 1969 - she had learned the anthem in English, and we sang it together in the two languages at the inaugural meeting. We both sang it in Irish earlier this year to our Swedish friends in our new home in Kalmar, then joined in the lovely Song for Sweden - Du Gamla, du Fria. Happy days!
As a Irish person I think that this is the most beautiful instrumental arrangement of the Irish national anthem that I have ever heard it's too bad that they don't play it anymore
If You want to see what the closedown anthem movie would look like in 2023 go to: Irish National Anthem + Movie (Kieran Griffith) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ISgcN5v4f6A.html
Thank you for your cordial comment. I greet you as an Irish speaking southern Protestant whose great grandfather came from Belfast. There's a mix! :-) All the best to you.
Only as an adult do I appreciate how beautiful this version is! Great memories of childhood, asking my parents to be allowed to stay up to watch this just before bed!
I thought it was boring when I was a kid (Then again I thought almost all art was boring if it was not a naked lady.). Only later did I realize that its a beautiful work of art. Much more exciting then a William Etty porno.
@@spacemooseireland women aren't my type and I'm afraid I had to google who William Etty was! (my bad!) 😂 so I'll take your word for it! But that aside this beautiful version and arrangement of our anthem is definitely a work of art! Doubt it could ever be beaten.
@@AnIrishMan500 If you want to see something of a similar subject go to: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ISgcN5v4f6A.html I made it when I was inspired by the RTE Closedown movie from the 1960's.
Do you think we should sing the Anthem in English or Irish? I prefer English because I don't like the way most people think its: Sinn na fianna fail....mumble...mumble..Eireann.....mumble Amhran na bfían!
+Hell in Hibernian Why I was in Primary School we had to do all the prayers and national anthem in Irish! I know every word but strangely I don't know it in English at all, other than "soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Éire"!
Hell in Hibernian Some people want that to be Ireland's national anthem pending unification with the north! Crazy! My school was fairly crazy in things like that (I'm only in 6th year now so it's only a few years ago!) We even had to say "dia dhuit a athair" and stand up when the priest walked in! Nonsense altogether haha
Ahhh the good old days when you had a prayer at Midnight then Amhrán na bhFiann and even then at the Cinema before you would get 2 movies a short one about some holiday destination and then the Main Movie Amhrán na bhFiann was played before them both.
Thank you. Very interesting to an American who had not heard or seen this before, even though I was in The Ireland in the 70's. I watched the sailing of the "tall ships" in New York Harbor for our 200th anniversary on Irish television from a bar in Sligo.
Happy days with my dad (Donegal man) and family in Ireland, the only time as a kid the tv played the national anthem, back in Scotland it was off before the first note...
But where are the people? Emigrated to make way for Third World aliens. Already half as many inhabitants speak Romanian as a first language as speak Irish.
From Brazil i want to deliver the best for Eire and the North who reelected Sinn Fein for the second time,i have a very good felling who we see a unified Ireland soon
It's so hard to believe RTE used to play a brilliant version of the Angelus which our lady holding Jesus Christ can we have the Irish national anthem at the end of the TV programmes, and this is one such version I will always remember play in the 80s, how RTS changed it's unbelievable.
Good on you, come to Ireland any time you want and it will be an honor for me and my countrymen wherever your from. Though, I am curious, where are you from?
I did that as well but I decided to make my own 21'st century version and you can see it on my channel as "Irish National Anthem + Movie (Kieran Griffith)" Word of warning though, It is based on the RTÉ National anthem from the black and white days of the station, which is a bit less environmentally friendly.
There are tons of 1960s RTÉ close down national anthem on RU-vid. Just type in keywords: irish national anthem rte and you will have all of the anthems including one I made myself for if the RTÉ was still closing down in the 2000s called: 'What-If 21st Century RTÉ Closedown (Kieran Griffith)'
A country that I love, but no longer recognise anymore. A country that looks after the outsider before a natural citizen is not fit to be called a country anymore
Ireland is the friendliest nation in Europe and its only people who are grasping at straws to find excuses for everything that is not perfect in Ireland who blame immigrants and visitors If you are a xenophobe you aren't fit to be called an Irish man. Ireland is the third proudest nation on Earth and one thing all good and smart people in Ireland can be proud of is that 10 percent of Irish residents weren't born in Ireland and race motivated crimes are extremely rare. i am not white myself and my mother was born in Kenya to an Indian family and I plan to adopt two baby girls from Africa when the time is right and bring them up to be even more Irish then I am. I would die for my country Ireland. Would you just die for just most people in Ireland or all people who call themselves Irish?
@@spacemooseireland the whole racist...xenophobia calling isn't going to work anymore I'm afraid, people are waking up to it. I am pointing out absolute facts, that Irish people are now 2nd class citizens in their own country...and frankly I couldn't give a fuck what you think...you woke shitbag.
bcuzfaqudatzy... Brilliant on so many levels. Of course The Soldiers Song. But truly I believe that not only James Joyce, but also, all Joyceian scholars will be massively impressed with your translation of as gaeilge Amhran na bhFiann into a gutteral , slip slap slop slide into the world of late night approbation of our nashional anntherumm. Hurrah an' hip hip hippopotamus... Slan agus etcetorium.
Joyce never went back to see the Free State for himself. If you read the chapter of the Citizen's ranting in 'Ulysses' you will understand why. Joyce foresaw the deformation and stagnation that would result from 26 counties of Ireland cutting themselves off from the rest of the British Isles.
In my channel I have what is maybe the oldest closedown of RTÉ, could you please drop in the video and comment from which year you believe it is? I found it in another channel, and as it is a public thing, I uploaded it, neither me neither the one who uploaded it first know which year is from
