i was looking at gummy candies around Halloween one year, and i realized you could do a whole mockup of a witches' brew, with a miniature cauldron, sold as props around Halloween; then there's gummy worms, which could double as snakes; gummy bears, which could be homunculi; gummy frogs, gummy fish...

BNektar in the Detroit area primarily brews Meads and Ciders, and they have meads aged in whiskey barrels, beer barrels, wine barrels, rum barrels, bourbon barrels, and tequila barrels. The barrels clearly add a flavor to the meads as each takes on the aspect of the other alcohol. My buddy loves the one aged in bourbon barrels, but I like the one from the rum barrel and the one from the tequila barrel. Can't recall the names off the top of my head though, but I'm sure most are on their website (unless it's a taproom only special release.) Sláinte!

I'm from Belgium and damn, I've spent many a night at the "Pelikaan" (the Pelican) in Antwerp with a handful of Irish Nutcase friends, sucking the last dregs from a pint of lager or even cider, just in sympathy for their misery. Someone should invite you to the world's most infamous pub. It's also in Antwerp, Belgium. It's called "The Kulminator" and has over nine-hundred (900) beers; most of 'em locally brewn and almost impossible to obtain because of the rarity of 'em. Rare because brewn by some ob-fucking-scure gathering of friars in a remote cloister in the depths of unknown Belgium. Trappist before the name was ever invented. Get your producers on it and come to Belgium to get your fill. I swear.

Oh, for sure. We have a few different ones in my home. We were particular to a vanilla ice cream version but we didn't get the name of the brewery and we can't find it anywhere now.

"Brett ale" refers to the brettanomyces yeast that is used. It's a wild yeast that creates funky flavors. I sort of like referring to brett beers as the "stinky cheese" of beers. Not everyone will love them, but those that do cherish them. I'm one of those that do.

beat me to it! my favorite style of beer is the Belgian sour/Flanders red / bret beer. the best one I've ever had was the Cuvee de Tomme from Lost Abbey in California. absolutely amazing. Brett yeast and sour cherries. so good...

Thank you for recognizing that Brett is yeast! So many people confuse them with sour beers and try to call it a bacteria like lactobacillus. When I tell them it's Wild Yeast they argue with me and say, "Well how do you know?" and I reply, "Well I brew for a living and I have Brett yeast in the cooler right now." Funky flavor and horse blanket/wet hay armoma. Sounds awful, tastes great. lol.

Barleywines are my favorite. Beer aged in both wine and bourbon/whiskey barrels. The best are layered in a way that you can taste all 3. In the USA, Hi-Wire's Ringmaster is the best I've tried to date.

Founder's and Bell's have some great barrel-aged beers. I've had Bell's Third Coast Old Ale, and Founder's KBS, both phenomenal. I'd give them both a Martin 10/10

I did comment before watching the video. Figured they would have had some of the US barrel aged beers. Bourbon County and it's variants are the gold standard. They are the original. For my money though, I prefer Prairie Artisanal Ales or Central Waters.

Barrel-aged beers are about all I care to drink anymore. I'd rather just have a cocktail or scotch otherwise. You can take the edge off with just one, or get good and relaxed with two, and no need to pound three or four just to get a buzz. Boulevard Brewery in Kansas City - their Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout is my favorite beer I can somewhat easily get my hands on at the moment, and that sucker is an 11.8% ABV. Love the stuff.

Michigan has some great barrel aged beers including a few from Founders, Dark Horse, and Bell's and 2 of my favorite brewer names: Witch's Hat and Jolly Pumpkin. Check them out. ~Be Blessed

For Easter, I put together a basket of barrel-aged-brews for my father. He loves 'em. The complex flavors and the high alcohol content(several of the beers I chose had ABVs greater than 15%) really speak to the old man. All I know is I spent $300+ for like six bottles so they better be decent. lol

For future reference, if you do more barrel aged, aim for stouts or barley wines. Those are generally my favorites for picking up the notes a barrel can give beer.

By the way, the "Pelican" is the oldest Belgian business still worked in. It used to be a fish-shop back in the twelfth century. The fish and beer they currently sell is much more recent, cross my heart and hope to die. Which I did, a couple of times, over the years. Love you guys 'n' dolls. Years ago before beer was mass produced, beer was aged in 50 gallon barrels, and served from them, it was not until the 20th century were brewers brewed batches in mass, and aged in larger barrel, tanks.

Andre's still makes it. It's not a beer-wine combo. It is a mixture of red wine and champagne. I tried a bottle a few years ago to see how bad it was. Surprisingly, it was pretty drinkable for a $6 bottle of wine.

@@FlintIronstag23 Cold duck was originally the dregs of wine (and later also champagne) left in the cups after the nobles were done with their banquets. The servants would collect the all the dregs in one container, and then drink it to have their own party. Over time, this changed to the modern version of cheap red and sparkling wine. They don't use real champagne because it costs too much and you wouldn't want to ruin good champagne by mixing it with red wine.

The barrel aged Chimay ales are so nice. Sadly we dont get them often in the states and are unnecessarily expensive. but if you find them and its the current season they are released... worth every penny.

The microbrew 3 blocks from me does a oak whiskey barrel aged imperial stout, it stays in at least 1 year. This year its 12.5 % abv (officially) others years have been higher (unofficially, i think above 12.5 he can't call it beer anymore)

Yeah, it's too bad they didn't have an imperial stout to try, there's so much going on taste-wise in those things. I always thought around 10% ABV you could start calling it barley wine, but maybe it's higher.

Local World Whisky Award winning distillery was just given their licence to sell in Europe, the UK and the States....They have a wonderful triple pot distilled Irish style Poitin that has won multiple awards.

There's a brewery/distillery/tap room (same place) in the town I live in. They make their own in house beer and spirits. It's so fricken good.

FYI, liquor previously made in the barrels does NOT add to the ABV of the beer. It tastes boozy, but it's not actually getting alcohol from the liquor. Given how much the crew tend to enjoy bourbon, I highly recommend getting some Bourbon Barrel aged stouts. I don't know what you can all get in Ireland, but in the states we have a massive selection. Craft brewing has gotten very popular in the last 10 years or so. I'll look for the crew on Untappd now. ;-)

As an intro to barrel aged beers, wine barrel ones wouldn't be my first suggestion. They're good, but more of an acquired taste if done well. I would've gone for the tried and true bourbon/whiskey/rye barrel aged beers, even a rum one would be a good starter as well. The Anejo barrel aged beer sounds lovely though.

Not surprised they didn't like the beers aged in the wine barrels. I've tried a few like that and the combination of the two doesn't work well, at least to my taste. However, barrels used for spirts like whiskey, tequila, rum, etc. seem to work well

They have a stout that has been aged in mezcal barrels I’d love to try . But I haven’t been able to find it in Michigan. I’m a bourbon barrel aged stout, brown ale and barley wine beer man. I love the higher Abv beers 11% to 15%.

I don’t know why I enjoy these so much perhaps it’s the brogue. You should really try bourbon aged beers like Dragon’s Milk or Kentucky Bourbon Ale.

When I think of barrel-aged beer, wine casks are not what comes to mind. Bourbon and whisky barrels, now THAT'S the ticket. Try Chicago's Goose Island breweries Bourbon County Stout. It'll put hair where you want it and remove it from where you don't! Cheers....
