Potato chips - or crisps as we call them in Ireland. Who doesn't love them?! We managed to get our hands on a particularly popular Canadian brand, so we figured - let's see what our Irish People make of trying Miss Vickies chips!

I absolutely LOVE Miss Vickie's chips. Cool origin story too; They owned a potato farm in Ontario and she started making chips for her kids lunches because she could control the ingredients. Then the neighbors started eating them, then the town folk... and BOOM! Within six years, sold to Frito Lay.

@@Pandameter13 Just to play devil's advocate, perhaps the demand outpaced their ability to create and distribute the product, and thus the brand was sold to the international conglomerate with a contractual stipulation that they continue to be manufactured in the same way with the same ingredients? It is a possibility. Many small brands were created and then sold exactly that way and continue to keep (hopefully) most of their original "flair."

Don't be giving the wrong idea. MV doesn't do those generic flavours that you get from the big brands. You're more likely to find coffee roasted duck turds than ketchup.

As a Canadian, I can confirm that Miss Vicki's is probably the best chip brand on our grocery shelves. I even like their "original" (ie. plain) variety, though as far as flavours go, I like salt & vinegar or lime & black pepper (but seriously, they're all good).

Funny thing is, quite a number of us French Canadians have a little Irish ancestry and our traditional folk music has a distinctively celtic twist (including jigs and reels - partly from Brittany and reinforced by lrish immigrants) because Irish folks have married into French Canadian families for centuries. Back then, religion mattered more than language and maybe there was a little bit of solidarity in the whole "invaded by/looked down upon the Brits" thing. There were Irish settlers in New France back during the era of French colonial rule and even more after the Brits took over and Irish immigration ramped up. There are even French Canadian last names in Quebec that don't even occur in France because they were made up names that sounded French used Irish troops who'd fought for the French and concealed their identity from the British (just fading in with the locals as another white Catholic who spoke some French). Interesting how there are 180 thousand or so folks with the surname Langlois (66th most common last name in the province) and 35 thousand Langlais in Quebec but only a few thousand Langlois in France and virtually no Langlais... names which literally mean "the English guy" and would likely have been how the rest of a community referred to an English-speaking/accented person as a nickname. www.concordia.ca/artsci/irish-studies/foundation/irish-in-quebec.html - from the extract of the paper "By the end of the 1600s, it is believed that 130 of all the 2,500 families in New France, or roughly 5%, were Irish." For folks who tend to think of themselves as exceedingly French in ancestry, we've had a strong Irish streak going WAY back. I grew up being taught by teachers who came from the strongly ethnically Irish village of Shannon, just north of Quebec City. When I was a kid, the locals still had a noticeable Irish accent to their Canadian English and French and had a strong sense of attachment to Ireland.

Miss Vickie's is owned by PepsiCo but most chip companies have factories all over so these are just made in Canada. You can buy the salt & vinegar ones here in MD but ours are made in MD (or in a nearby state).

Miss Vickie's is maybe a central Ontario thing. It grew up around the spud growing region near Alliston. The original factory was in the four corners village of Glencairn which might be hard to find on maps. It is a great success story. What I want to know is how you managed to fly those bags of chips to Ireland without having them broken into bits. What I found funny was the fellow saying that, "My life is hard enough". If your life is Jalapeno chip hard, most of the world wants your life.

I love Miss Vickie’s and I’m in California! The print is only in American English, no Canadian French words on the bag but the chips/Crisps, are from Canada! And the chips are delicious! When I visit different parts of Canada, I always bring back locally made candies or cute souvenirs for my family, Thank you, Canada! 😁❤️

I moved from Ireland to Canada years ago and can confirm Canadian crisps are good. I did have a good giggle at Miss Vickie's being called "fancy crisps" though. My favourite Miss Vickie's is Sweet Chili & Sour Cream flavour. Not as spicy as Jalapeno but with enough spice to make them fun.
