The Verlander Family plays a traditional Irish polka set: Rattlin Bog / Kerry Polka / Britches Full of Stitches.
For sheet music, videos, and more, visit the family website:
www.fatimafarm...
tenor banjo: Michael
guitar: Mary
tin whistle: Veronica
bodhran: Thomas
The polka set was recorded live with minimal effects. Dad insists, "we must be able to play live what we record."
Thank you to the Online Academy of Irish Music for teaching us how to play traditional Irish music!

Great set! I'm learning to play the mandolin at OAIM at the moment, and it's much more fun to play along than just repeating the tunes on your own. So thanks for the opportunity to play with you!

the 2nd polka also known as John Egan's or FABA Polka [F#ABA the first 4 notes] I've always found 'Kerry Polka' a confusing title cos there are 100's of them!
@FatimaFarming
@FatimaFarming 2 года назад
The variety of names is daunting to me right now, but it does reflect the organic nature of the music. We love the charm and can't wait until all the names become like the nicknames of old friends. Thanks for listening and commenting!

@@FatimaFarming Yes,I've also heard FABA Polka, from someone who' d never heard it called differently,and its a lovely folky derivation. I also like that people call any of the three Ballydesmond Polkas 1,2or 3 quite randomly, and it matters little, and they are so recognisable from their common ending bars,all good fun.

Listened for 3mins and 37 seconds but didn't hear a song as the title implies. What I did hear was a beautiful tune.
@FatimaFarming
@FatimaFarming 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the kind words despite the disappointing wild goose chase. I'm sure some veteran Irish musicians can confirm that we are playing the tunes as advertised. Perhaps you are thinking of a different version. I once heard, something like, "there are two sides to every story but twelve versions to every Irish song." That's the charm of traditional folk music!
@rabnuds
@rabnuds 8 месяцев назад
@FatimaFarming I don't think you read my post correctly. I said that I didn't hear any songs. What I did hear was a medley of very well played tunes but no songs were heard. Song are sung and there was no singing here. Tunes were played here not songs
@rabnuds
@rabnuds 8 месяцев назад
@@FatimaFarming The original title (now presumably edited) described "songs" being played. And as no songs were heard, this is what prompted my post.
@FatimaFarming
@FatimaFarming 8 месяцев назад
No edits to title, but thank you for the lesson about songs. I did not know that songs are necessarily sung. Makes sense!@@rabnuds
@movinon1242
@movinon1242 7 месяцев назад
In Irish folk circles, "songs" have vocals/ lyrics, whereas "tunes" indicate the performance is only done using musical instruments. Its a bit of a genre-specific colloquialism, you might say. But any Irish folk musicians would know folks outside of the tradition would rarely be aware of these self-imposed semantics, and therefore should try to explain the difference without any severity. Fine job, btw.
