A little tribute to the Mk3 Push/Pull sets which served the network well for 20 years from their introduction in 1989 to their withdrawal in 2009.
Clips shown here date from 1994 up to 2007 filmed at locations in Thomastown, Bennettsbridge & Lavistown, Co. Kilkenny with some onboard footage between Thomastown & Waterford.
The 2 early clips shows the sets operating in non-Push/Pull mode with baby GMs and 071s in charge. From here on in the 201 class is exclusively used in Push/Pull mode.

Brilliant videos there. I loved those driving trailers, they looked really great and I hope they have kept some

@TheIrishMainline 5 лет назад
Thanks Seamus, they did indeed look well although drivers absolutely hated them, very draughty and often leaked rain. Trailer 6105 is in storage at Moyasta in Co. Clare but it's future looks bleak.

It's nice to see the 201s having a break. And I love the Clickety Clack sounds

Brilliant Shots ! They Shouldnt Of Scrapped Most Of Them

Thanks Mark. It was an absolute crime, they were nowhere near life expired. Sadly IÉ wanted DMUs instead of loco hauled services so this sealed their fate.

Awesome video! Some MK3 coaches were sold to Belmond and are now part of the Grand Hibernian, but sadly the rest got scrapped.

No worries man, I just DON'T understand why IÉ scrapped the mk3 before there expiry date I personally think that they were "insane in the membrane" it really really saddens my heart. 😭
@TheIrishMainline
@TheIrishMainline 6 лет назад
It was mainly down to IÉ's attitude towards loco hauled trains Eoin. To them, railcars were (and still very much are) the future as regards passenger services. It was still a crime though, these coaches would have made an excellent backup to the Enterprise service.

Most definitely the best coaches to travel on in Ireland. I often wonder why the push pulls (the ones built in Ireland) were the ones to get the scrap line first. I hope 6105 will be preserved. Great Video!
@TheIrishMainline
@TheIrishMainline 10 лет назад
Thanks DB! They only ever ran on a Sunday down here so I rarely got a chance to travel in them sadly :( They were probably first to go because the Mk4 sets used all the available Push/Pull enabled 201s (whilst the other 201s headed to death row at Inchicore). I'd hope at least one set will be spared but I wouldn't hold my breath!
@TheIrishMainline

Cheers Matthew! True indeed, especially when you think of coaches like the Cravens that were deemed to have a lifespan of no more than 15-20 years, they lasted over 40 and then the Mk3s which were estimated initially to last over 30 and never got near this :(

Its sad that they got rid of such nice, interesting trains. Now they only have those boring, no character DEMU's for Inter City routes (apart from Dublin-Belfast/Cork). I wonder why most children nowadays have no interest in trains. They probably would if Irish Rail was still loco hauled, and still in the Orange livery.

The Irish Mainline Final withdrawal[edit]At the end of February 1984, five months before the inauguration of DART, only four sets remained.[50] Most vehicles were withdrawn soon after electric services began; by 1985, there were only two sets of three cars each, one set used to provide a shuttle service between Bray and Greystones and the other as a spare.[51] One of these sets was withdrawn in 1986, the other surviving to pass into Iarnród Éireann ownership in 1987 and managing to outlast its normal motive power; the remaining 201 class locomotives were withdrawn in 1986, and 121 Class locomotives were used thereafter. (Locomotive 121, then numbered B121, had undergone trials with push-pull stock as early as 1973.)[52] During Hurricane Charley in August 1986, the shuttle train was even used to stand in for electric trains on the partially flooded main Dublin-Bray line. However, the shuttle was withdrawn in mid-September 1987, due to the poor condition of the rolling stock (the service was resumed at the end of October, using an 80 Class train hired fromNorthern Ireland Railways).[53][54]

supafuckinmingster Ah, there was 2 2600 classes, the ones you're referring to were the AEC railcars from the pre-DART days, the modern 2600 units are Tokyu built and came into service in 1993: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IE_2600_Class
