Video footage taken late in the evening of August 2nd 1995 when the up and down Sligo liners crossed in Mullingar. The up liner was double headed by 121 class locos 124 and 134. The down liner was headed by 071 class loco no 077. The up liner shunted into the siding to take on additional bagged cement and molasses wagons on its way to Dublin. After a crew change, both trains head off on their respective journeys. Apologies for the poor audio quality on this ideo - there's a strong hiss and a regular 'popping' sound. I had a problem with the camcorder at the time and I have not had a chance since to 'clean' the audio on the tape. Hope it does not spoil your enjoyment of it. Enjoy. E

It's amazing how much this line has changed in 16 years - from having crossing full looking freight trains, to not carrying an ounce of freight, and almost never even seeing a locomotive!

I re-roofed the Signal Box, empty, about 10 years ago. Sad to see.

Nice to hear Gareth. At least someone in Irish Rail had the foresight to do this; the continuing destruction of parts of Portarlington station, on the other hand, is a disgrace!!

Great footage, thanks for uploading it. I love the oweld fellah wandering around on the track in the suit jacket with no hi-viz vest on! A staple of the era, health and safety would never allow it today!

Great to hear from the Irish abroad particularly seeing that's its St Patrick's Day tomorrow! Yes that was Guinness on board. Have some more footage of Mullingar Station which I will root out and post. Thanks for the kind comments!

Thanks Eamonn. As one of the viewers commented - not an ounce of freight now.

The Irish People get their priorities right every time by the cargo those trains carry!

Lets look forward to a Government that doesn't charge peppercorn rates to truckers as encouraged by the EU and stop taxing motorists to pay for truckers. Then trains like these will return.

Have a look at the following upload from midlandcompound1000 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RhdP7GXF7iA.html My good friend Dan and I were out that same evening together and his excellent video compliments the 121's and 071 movements that evening in Mullingar. Great to finally see it!!
