Very nice video. Love the way the top of the Engine has caught the branch of a tree between Athlone and Moate. Just shows how over-grown it was at the time....

Yes it caught a few branches or two during its journey through the jungle!

Stunning footage there Ciaran, that must have been the last time the weed sprayer visited that line, just looked at your photos of Moate Station and it has really gotten very since the weed sprayer was there in 1997.

Glad you enjoyed it Stephen. The sprayer believe it or not ran up to around 2003/4 on that line, it's featured on one of the Markle DVDs. Yes Moate looks terrible but the track has recently been tidied up for the new walkway!www.advertiser.ie/athlone/article/74485/greenway-project-on-track-for-summer-opening

That's actually a great idea for the old line, is the track being kept?

irish rail trains They are keeping the track but trains may not return for many years. The route was formerly the mainline to Galway and the west until those trains were diverted to Heuston via Portarlington, but the old line remained an extremely useful for GAA specials and PWD trains up to the mid 1990s and early 2000s, so it could have a future if lines get busy again but that's no likely for now :(

I believe they should re open all closed railway lines throughout Ireland sooner then later.

bannis27 Thanks Dave for your message, yes that is no problem using the footage as long as you credit it to Colm O'Callaghan, the person who originally recorded the video. Good luck with the video, like to see it when complete.
