I'm Danish, but I lived in Ireland (in Galway) for a couple of years, though it's a long time ago now. But I still think that maybe I understand what you mean. The Irish have no reason whatsoever not to be what they are or to try to adjust to foreign norms, to be more 'continental' or whatever. I was a postgrad student when I lived there, but the one I learnt most from was none of my professors or lecturers - 'twas a fisherman from Bantry in co. Cork. He could entertain you hours on end with his stories, I swear - like having a few pints with Brendan Behan, I imagine, ha, ha... Old Ireland, eh?
