This Irish soda bread recipe couldn't be easier really. Mix it up, shape it, forget that the British ruling classes let millions of Irish people starve in the 19th century, bake it. Done. No kneading, no proving, no yeast, no accountability!
Irish soda bread full recipe
500g all purpose flour
1.5 teaspoons of salt
2 teaspoons of brown sugar (or normal sugar if you like)
1 scant level teaspoon of baking soda
350ml buttermilk
Bake in a preheated oven at 180C fan or around 360F for about 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Top tip - you don't need to go searching for buttermilk at the shops. Add 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar/white vinegar or lemon juice to ordinary milk and let it sit for 20 minutes. Does the job perfectly and cheap. I just made some the other night

I'm loving the commentary. As an Jrish woman it's refreshing to hear our history not being dumbed down or even denied. I make a lot of soda bread, white, brown and currant. I have a sister in law living in Teeside and have been to visit a lot. Lovely part of the world and the people are just as lovely. 😊

I think I'm right in saying that Middlesbrough had the 2nd largest Irish born population after Liverpool at the end of the 19th century

This might be the time that I actually try to make soda bread instead of putting it off to make more labor intensive yeasted bread like I somehow always end up doing. Also, let me state again how much I like your combination of contextual humor and the insightful, yet poignant lessons that go with the recipes. All the best, and may the coming year be better than the one before!

Inspired to bake some Irish soda bread now! Agree with you about our history curriculum in schools, colonialism was either completely omitted or just glossed over. Keep up with the baking and educating😀

Well said! Shame on the UK's education policy. My husband's soviet education was of a far higher standard. It seems that soviet Union actually wanted their people to be able to be as good at things as they could be. Especially maths and sciences and even folk medicine. They seemed to have wanted people to excell in things like science, music and art. My hubby is shocked at my lack of science/physics education. I learned more from him in this aspect during my 7 years of life with him than at anytime in my education in the UK. We fail to apply a whole approach toeducation. At least this video is a multi layered and dimentional educational experience compared to UK secondary education. Parents need to educate their children themselves it seems.

Easy peasy, yummy bread especially when we are all a bit strapped for cash, there is so much injustice in the world squirming with shame just listening to it not that I'm from the ruling classes far from it. we don't treat each other very well do we us humans. strange how nearing the end of 2021 we still view others as undeserving if not from our tribe xx Anyway thanks as ever for your recipes and company , wishing you peace happiness and good health see you next year xxx Best wishes everyone !

Well said regarding education in the UK regards our real history....we truly have been let down by the government's national curriculum which I feel was invented to make it look like we were being educated but actually were not. A little like a Jedi mind trick of an education. Happy New year to you and keep the tasty classics coming on your channel. Thanks for making this video and the nice recipe.

Thanks for the recipe and the Irish history lesson. Born in England to Irish parents I moved to Canada when Thatcher was in power. The present Tory government makes Maggie look like a lightweight. Anyway, enough politics. I made your cheese scone recipe today and the results were magnificent. Thanks again Marra.

As an Irish person I found your comments hilarious (and obviously sad etc.), but thanks for having the cahoonas to say what you said. I know it was a long time ago but it's good to see some recognition of the facts. No hard feelings though :) and that beautiful soda bread you made could be the makings of world peace in the right hands I reckon! Great job and thanks for the entertainment.

As British we have to recognise we were all a slave colony of the 1st German Reich in England from 900 years or so ago. Today our queen is German. We are very mixed up genetically but that is what makes the UK "working class" a very nice regionally diverse people. We also just need to understand what our overlords have done under the cloak of the flag they gave us and told us to unite and sacrifice our forefathers lives for. I am personally ashamed of the ruling class of the UK and the horrors they conscripted our ancestors into. I am only lucky to have known a world where my country is now full of diverse culture and so many good and interesting people with back grounds from all our our worldly realm. I am glad to have friends of all skin tone and accent and background. And that as a modern British person is the only good I can take from the years of horror unleashed on all of our ancestors from the parasitic Lifeforms who call themselves the landed gentry who are responsible for their behaviour in the past.

@@Anon.5216 awww Ditzy, I think you probably mis-read my comment or more likely took it out of context. Of course I don't think any atrocities committed against the Irish are hilarious. That would make me a very, very silly person and I can assure you that I'm not :)

Thank you for the recipe. I _did_ learn about the Irish Potato Famine etc at school, but that doesn't make it a whit better that it happened. We need to remember. And we also need critical thinking. Good bread.

Love the history lesson, none of their genocides were successful. Neither did they manage to bend the original inhabitants to their will, including here in Australia. Great looking bread, I'll give it a try.

Can i use full fat milk instead of buttermilk? Or replace the buttermilk with greek yogurt?My kind of bread this 🍞🍞🍞 x
@TheTeessideChef
@TheTeessideChef 2 года назад
You need the acid from the buttermilk to react with the baking soda to get the rise. If you want to use full fat milk you can, but you will need to add an acid. Lemon juice would work well for this. Try adding around 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in along with 350ml milk. Your results might not be exactly the same as mine here but I have made soda bread this way before and it works well. You could also go half yoghurt and half milk.
