Welcome to episode 3 of my "Learning to fly" series. In this episode, I take control of the Piper Cherokee, conducting my very first takeoff & also using the radios for the first time - I was super nervous but it was one of the best feelings in the world! We did some general handling & spent time getting a feel for how the Aircraft handles.
I am learning to fly in at Merseyflight who are located at Liverpool Airport (EGGP/LPL).

You most certainly got my respect Matt, having lost that much weight and now flying a real plane. I've been fighting my own overweight to and lost 11 Kilos (24 lbs) got a ppl since 2017 and now finishing my ATPL theory. Greetings from a fellow simmer and real life aviator from Germany.

Neil was my instructor, I passed a few months ago. You're in good hands there buddy. Remember, though... Climbing = Power, Attitude, Trim. Descending = Attitude, Power, Trim. I always used to reach for the trim wheel before I'd set either power or attitude, while it didn't always end badly I was almost constantly adjusting the trim. As soon as I got into the habit of trimming to my selected power and attitude things became a lot easier to manage.

Funny you should say this - that was the hardest thing to master for me. Now I use the trim probably 80% less.

Many congratulations to you on your progress. I have my PPL in real life. The only thing that annoys me about the sim community is the sense that just because people can fly a computer screen they automatically believe they can fly in real life. I've watched a few people flying aircraft in P3D and Xplane on RU-vid and Twitch and things like checklists almost become an inconvenience to them yet they claim to be flying "realistically". As RW pilots things like checklists are what are going to save your life! I wish you luck on your progress to becoming a RW pilot, it is a very steep learning curve even at PPL level.

Now I have my PPL and I’m currently working on instrument. It feels insane that someone I looked up is going through training just like I did

WELL DONE! Great to see, I fly with my dad in light aircraft and he allows me to do the takeoff! It’s amazing, harder than it looks but when you’re in the air it’s ace! Keep up the hard work!

Matt, I do always enjoy your video. I am also happy that you are doing what you always wanted to do! Well done. I do have a question for you. I am also overweight about 360lbs and trying to lose some. - I was wondering if you passed the Medical Class 1 or 2 for the PPL? - Are you thinking to pass your CPL > ME > NR > ATPL later on? - How's the difference in the radio communication between real life and sim with IVAO or VATSIM?

Nice job man! I find it challenging to maintain an altitude in fsx or xplane(no autopilot) so practicing that in the sim actually made it easier irl. Especially during instrument flying.

How do you record intercom audio? I'm looking for a GoPro-type camera that has some audio input, I guess, and an audio out adapter that lets me fork audio to both the camera and my headset.

@@gustafpeyron I can assure you it's better than what most of the world can't do and it was a first flight, with 500 hours of recorded flight simming (yeah it's not the same ik), part of 8 VA's, an Staff on one (Westjet), A COO Co owner on Flydubai, and a CEO of Flybe... This is a mobile sim btw so it's probably not one you know of, but has over 1.5M people with the game, and ofer 10,000 different people flying PER day.

@@ecoops123 As a CFI myself, I can still assure you that you didn't do a landing by yourself. Of course your instructor buttered you up to make sure it would be memorable for you. Why bother boasting about flight sim time? It means nothing. Hell, I've probably got thousands of hours in flight sim. Who cares.

@@gustafpeyron I don't know why myself but he did let me land since he was confident during my time flying at 2,00ft. It really wasn't helpful first time since the left spark plug had blown, which in that aircraft (PA28) is what ais used to start the engine, the right one keeps it running. That was the first recorded incident of the aircraft in around 40 years after coming from Florida before moving up to Sweden and finally to Southern England. I will not reply after this since it is wasting my time.

We might end up in the same airline lol Last time we talked, I told you I was flying the almighty DR400. Well, I finaly made it to my first solo flight 👍 I'm looking forward to see you at that stage :D Oh and I got a question : why do you yell "Clear prop !"? I never did that whenever I flew (some kind of procedure ?) I thought it was a joke from airforceproud95 but apparently not X) PS: congrats for these last events (flying and losing weight). Not a requirement, just making sure nobody is nearby before he fires the prop, if he gets a reply from anybody outside he won't start the engine

Holy heck you did forced approaches and stuff that early, damn :O, did you do your first solo yet? I was wondering because I soloed the other day we practiced a 180 EP I'm doing short and soft rn but my forced approaches are after that. Really impressive that you guys are practicing that now. Also really impressive shit to go into the real cockpit with such a smooth transition man good shit keep it up :D

I don’t know the plane well but it seems like the primer should come further out, also if you have trouble getting started in future, after a failed start, pump the throttle about 2 times and then start again. It should start straight up!

I wish airports that have commercial and private traffic where the controllers know full well there will be students in the aircraft would speak a little slower on clearances and taxy instructions. If you weren’t as confident as Matt... any new student would be stumped by it. I learnt to fly out to gamston but now out of Doncaster and they just throw everything out without even a breath! Annoys me when people are learning to fly as it makes them nervous! I guess they don’t like flying schools there! Well the ATC anyway. Sorry for the rant. Great video Matt! Keep it up
