Stop listening to the haters dude, real pilots don't hand fly a 737 the entire journey anyways. The auto pilot is there for a reason. If you want to use it, use it. It's your channel, not theirs.. Haterz gonna hate regardless of what you do...
In real life if you are hand flying a plane to fl100 your co-pilot is going to look at you as you don't know what your doing. Pilots only fly the plane by hand for 3 minutes roughly, 1.5 minutes after takeoff and 1.5 minutes before landing.
Just think, with the amount of automation being poured into the Dreamliner and the A350 and whatever is to come in the furure, one day we will hear over the intercom "Ugh ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking.. Does anyone know which one is the any key???"
In response to someone complaining about the AP use...in reality when pilots hand fly, they have a first officer handling the radios, MCP modes, flaps, etc etc. In the sim he's doing all this by himself, so it makes sense to make more use of the automation.
I admire your honesty about being nervous when on pilots edge. You certainly dont show it when you fly, a true professional. Being an actor we all get nervous before show time its how confident you feel at the time which clearly you are. A brilliant channel dont change the way you fly for the haters. Well done.
Simon Skyfall Well said. That said, Matt has very little to be nervous about when flying IFR. He knows enough to get safely from A to B in the US national airspace system under IFR. Now he just has to have fun while doing it!
Thanks again Matt. Great video. For me, it is professional to use an autopilot in a 737. It is not shocking flying nor a shocking landing, nor are you an idiot. My flying is not perfect in a 737 solo and it is helpful to see someone as accomplished as yourself not do everything perfectly every time. I learn from your actions whatever they be. I imagine a SWA pilot would have difficulty if he/she had to use a mouse in the dark flying solo with stuttering scenery LOL
I have a pilot friend who flys 777's. I asked him about auto pilot and his answer was "soon as the gear is up, the auto pilot gets turned on and then soon as gear is down the auto pilot gets turned off". Excellent videos Matt
Southwest gates at KSAN are at Terminal 1 East: gates 1A and 1-10. If you went left from B8 after you landed it would have been the last set of gates. The gate you parked in, gate 20, is for international flights. At 58:58, the airport on the left is Montgomery Field (KMYF), and the right is MCAS Miramar (KNKX). - A friendly San Diegan and new sim pilot that learned from your videos
Great video. That "leetest readback" was a tec-route, which are specialized routes for trips between airports in the Southern California area, with specialized routes and altitudes based on aircraft type. Been learning all about them while getting my GND certification with ZLA in VATSIM. They make for some incredibly awesome clearances/readbacks, but man are they a massive pain in the ass to give out. Awesome stuff, was fun to hear one given on PilotEdge.
Just a quick tip for when you need to start the clock. There's a button to the left and right of the master caution/warning light for each pilot which makes takeoff a lot easier.
Great vid Matt, and kudos to you for flying with real ATC in US - it sounds quite nervewracking! You did a great job. Also ignore the criticism about switching on the autopilot - pilots frequently make good use of the AP, and in FS it's just you doing all the flying and the comms, so it makes total sense to let the autopilot share the workload.
I agree with your comment that nothing compares to the lighting in X-Plane. Love flying into San Diego at night. In fact if it's day when I'm approaching I soon find my fingers on SHIFT K or L! Sunsets/sunrises are amazing! I remember your FJS 737 KLAX-KSAN video and how impressed you were with the lighting. If you're at KLAX in FSX at night and slew up, you can see cities up and down the coast! Wish that were the case with X-Plane. Lights pop in and out in blocks depending on how far away you are. It's like there is a 10 mile radius around the a/c and lights come on and off as they enter/exit that radius. Still think it's amazing. Each sim has its strengths and weaknesses. Keep up the entertaining videos! Your injected comments like 'that was a shocking landing' and ' five million things at once' keep me smiling throughout all your videos!
Thank you for posting this. This video is what got me interested into P3D and just aviation in general. Your videos are my favorite sim videos to watch:)
Just FYI, about 95% of SWA aircraft have the HUD system, and a good percentage of the fleet do have the A/T system activated. I work for them and have ridden in the cockpit on many flights. Just observing flight crews, some will hands fly for a bit while others switch to A/P after 1500ft. I'm sure it depends on their mood and current conditions. Great Vids BTW. Its fun to see how other people handle flight sims.
Awesome video . Nice to see a sort of challenging approach. That traffic and night lightning was amazing. BTW I don't know why people seem to complain about you not flying manually. Well, they probably haven't watched the Boston-Washington Regional video. The departure was pretty much handlown (If I remember) and the approach, was basically a visual approach. So IMHO there's no problem in pure AP flying.
Flap 1 takeoff is the most popular flap setting to takeoff with in a B738, I just took a lesson at Flight Deck, and an Ex AAL Captain told me what I have just said and it especially applies with longer runways on these shorter flights because you aren't fully loaded :)
No matter what the landing is like I still really enjoy the entire video. The ATC and flight was really entertaining. The haters can do one... *shows middle finger*
Matt as far as i know from the flows, i think you're supposed to fully set the fmc, then configure the MCP before getting the ATC clearance, and then make any necessary changes. This is to minimize the time beetween clearance and pushback, at least in europe, there are some airports that state that time! Nice video as always!
Matt, perhaps the people who don't think you can hand fly the NGX should watch your Queenstown approach video. I think that would clear things up right away. Nice work as usual.
Matt, your videos are the best on the web. I really enjoy the commentary and the jokes. The occasional, "What the HELL is that!!" has me laughing every time. Keep up the quality stuff!!!!
Great video Matt! I greatly appreciate the effort you put into your videos, and you are definitely my favorite Flight Sim related RU-vidr. Keep doing good work!
Great video as usual, by the way, I was flying on vatsim a couple weeks ago in the states and I didn't realize you were the ATC that I was talking to until like halfway through the flight. Vatsim callsign JGM45.
To Matt, people fail to realize it's only one person(you) flying and doing atc, believe me sometimes it's hard to hand fly and talk to ATC especially if theirs alot of people flying, gotta stay focus on them and the aircraft and A/P helps ease the airspace tension, multiplayer now and you can hand fly while the other handles ATC, so to you all that judge the guy, think before you speak!
If you're still after ideas for flights, a flight in the Duke from San Carlos to Lake Tahoe (both Orbx) would be pretty cool, nice contrast of scenery. Great video btw :)
Matt good work on this video as always man :) If I recommend a future flight for a video maybe BAW73N EGLL-KSAN 777-200 would like to see what you can do with that triple seven for the landing in San Diego and just a fun fact BA park the triple seven at gate 20 at terminal 2 at KSAN
The haters have a point tho. I have no problem with you using the auto pilot as long as you know how to hand fly Matt. A lot of pilots have no idea how to find their own are in the dark without autopilot. Air France 447 is a good example. Just good to know what to do without technology.
Hi Matt, did you ever do any vids with the CaptainSim TriStar L-1011? It is such a great flying challenge. No GPS, its old school INS, a bare-bones flight computer that can only store 9 waypoints (!) you have to update, and with a 2nd Officer engineering station as well. The systems all seem to be quite deeply modeled on the CS version and all the instruments are so very 70's / 80's James Bond. Sure the 3D modeling has many betters, and you need to go digging for manuals and checklists, but wow what an aircraft. Would be great to see you flying it!
I was looking for a good pilotedge video and even though I saw this video last year when you posted it I enjoyed it again. I didnt remember that people were criticizing you. All I have to say to them is watch real world footage of any mid size aircraft I've seen autopilot engagement in a TBM at 1500 ft so to say that you arent hand flying enough is utter nonsense.
With the gates you need to put a L (left) or R ( Right) because of example in the netherlands we have mutiple sides of the D concourse so you tell the FMC you are at the right or left side of that concourse
At 21:28 I think the controller was imitating one of the controllers at JFK who stars on many Liveatc clips on youtube. One of said controllers is notorious for saying "See ya!" like that
If you do choose to make your next video a long haul, might I suggest UPS238. This is the almost daily flight from EGSS to KSDF. Equipment used is a 767-300.
Hey Matt, i just want to mention that if you have a 737 you always leave the electrical pumps on ( at least that is what Lufthansa and Air Berlin are doing ) Maybe other airlines do it differently, it would be nice if you would tell me. Happy Landings! :)
did an amazing flight but im mad at the atc who was doing local and i think i heard him give you taxi instructions but great flight i would love to be tower at fll in that game
Nice one Matt, very professional as always- you got no prob talking to atc, but the nerves still happen don't they ;) great video, looking forward to the next one,
Real airline pilots use autopilot 90% of the time and that's with two pilots. It would be unrealistic to hand fly the majority of a flight. Let the haters hate! Great video
Excellent. A typical, good flight on PE. I like flying with that controller. He's very cool, calm and collected - but they are all so good. It's so like RW, but much cheaper :-)
Taped over auto throttles? Matt I'm dying! "So they have to work for their money." Haha. I have heard that they pay their pilots minimum like 42k or something. So for starting out in the right seat, that's not too shabby.
Ha... shouldn't worry about people criticising you for your use of autopilot, it's there for a reason, to be used. Each person has individual preferences for flying, management of an aircraft after take-off is pretty challenging, if something exists to ease pressure then why not. After all, faults do happen when pilots are under additional stress
Thanks for the vid. The lack of other AC at the airports does take a lot away from the immersion. Have you ever tried running Pilot Edge with your AI Traffic turned up?? I realize that the AI traffic won't be interacting with PE but at least it would help with the visual immersion.
Why does PFPX always give you a Flaps 1 takeoff? I've talked to 2 real NG pilots, one Southwest, and they said they have never seen this used. They say Flaps 5 or 15 (Depending on weight, conditions) are the flap configurations usually used. Edit: I think you just answered my question as I wrote this!!
you should do a flight from Hobby airport in Houston to Las Vegas SW with a connected flight to Los Angeles. Ive personally been on the this flight, it would be cool to fly it
Hi Matt I was just on flight sim and found a nice coastal 1 hour and 30 min flight from Dubai to karchi In a 737-800 really nice flight would be nice to see you do.
Southwest has Huds, in the NG's, not sure about the -300's and -500's. The pilots still get paid for nothing so autothrottle is functional. Also, in the recent 737's, they have rockwell collins MCPs. Great video, love the ATC
Am I going crazy......or is the font in your pressurization panel (specifically the lcd display for cruise altitude/landing altitude) different than in the fsx variant of pmdg's ngx?
Hello Matt, great channel! Any chance to see you performing a vfr Flight across the Channel, and visit us in France? Francevfr has some great photorealistic sceneries with autogen for the North of France. A Flight to Lille via Le Touquet would be a lot of fun to do!
Really enjoyed the video Matt, nice to hear Pilot edge atc, it would make me really nervous too. After watching your videos I really want to give flying online a go but it looks so scary. (Dkentflyer)
DarranKent I thought the same but watched some videos of people flying on Vatsim and wrote down the main sections of voice, then jumped in. It's been going well. If you stay out of events at first as they can get very busy and build yourself you might find that easier to start it
Great video Matt. Sorry if you've addressed this before, but on your longer flights do you do the whole thing in one sitting? Obviously this flight is short so it wouldn't be that bad all in one go, but how about that 777 flight from Hong Kong to Heathrow you did a while back?
I don't see why people bitch about you turning autopilot on. My dad is a pilot on the A319 and A320 for United and he says that a bit after take off they let autopilot take hold. So through the eyes of a real airline pilot you do fly by the book. PS Great video Matt love to sit and binge watch these for a while.
