Iron Age Celtic Roundhouse: Building the Timber Frame Foundation | Bushcraft Project (PART 2)

We start work building the iron age celtic roundhouse shelter. Merchandise: taofficial.com/ In part 2 of this bushcraft project we dig foundation holes for the vertical posts that we collected in part 1. We bury the posts primitive style and compact them down with a stick and using the clay that we dug up to make the hole. The posts are buried about 15-18 inches into the ground. We burnt the ends of the logs to make them more rot-resistant.
We cooked up a duck stew over the fire in a cast iron dutch oven. Whilst the food was cooking over the fire we sourced some wood for beams. We took the bark off the logs using the drawknife and then notched them using the axe. Originally we had planned to put a hole in each vertical post with the auger, and then peg the beams in. However, we soon realised this would make our roof rafters uneven. So instead we made notches with an axe and angled the logs so that they would sit flush on the posts. In episode 3 we will peg these in with wood pegs and then finish the rest of the foundation frame of the bushcraft shelter.

So here's a question, what happens in a year or so time when the logs start to rot? Y'all put in so much hard work, so do the shelters and building stick around or do you break them down and build something new? If so, dont you have to worry about running out of trees??

You can pack gravel or small rocks around base of posts instead of dirt and it will further reduce heave in the winter. That will also keep moisture off the posts, further reducing rot.

Just watching y'all putting those posts in the ground reminds me of the time when I had to extend pasture fence lines. It involved wooden posts, a manual post-hole digger, & a stick to pack the dirt down. It was a lot of hard work but in the end, the pride I felt when I'd finished, it was an amazing feeling. I can just imagine how y'all will feel when this house is finished. I wish I could lend a hand :)

Easy fix, mortise and tenon joints. Mortise on left of every crossbeam and then a tenon on the right... bore through on the mortise, the slightly offset the tenon, then when you drive the peg, the mortise and tenon joints will be nice and tight. :) Just peg the wholes with a square pin so they will be nice and tight.. they'll never give and as time goes on, they will only become tighter. Same as the old timers did on cabins and timber frames. Not sure if yellow locust is available there, but they make the best pegs for such an endeavor.

The difference in height of the perimeter beam would be sorted by cutting each end as a crossed half - 50% of one beam, sits over 50% of the other. You could also notch the lower most beam if you wanted it to locate. Otherwise you would just auger through both cross halved beams and peg into the upright. The concern about loss in strength should be fine, since the roof rafters will sit on the joints in compression, forcing the structural elements together. Just an idea.

Just reading the "Living in the Past" book today, watching this in the evening, and realized that it's really the same sort of structure as they built a couple of, though theirs were much larger. Unfortunately from what I understand, the actual documentary/ other media associated with the project (apart from used copies of the book) is effectively impossible to find nowadays, or was the last time I looked, especially outside the UK. First learned about it from the interview Lindybeige did back in the day. Anyway cheers, love what you're doing; at the rate you're going though, you may as well start to coppice a few trees to harvest poles for future work instead of using quite so much heavy wood.

The original plan could have worked with a half lap joint on each end over the post, one notch up, one notch down, so that the horizontal pieces had no more than one log's thickness over each post, then pin down through each half-lap end into the post top. No need to have the 'wavy' effect, which only happens if your half-lap notches aren't deep enough.

Hiya, just want to say great series, I was on a weeks holiday in Cardiganshire, and on the road between the town of Cardigan and Newport, on the A487 on the right hand side down a small lane there is an Iron Age village called Castell Henllys. It's an actual iron age village and they have rebuilt the round houses where the original ones stood fascinating place, and it has the ability to move a person well it did me. The large round house has a fire pit in the middle and I noticed that the fire is in a square shallow pit, obviously the round house is a lot larger than the one you are building, but I think the fire is in a pit to allow it to be a larger fire. I was lucky as it was November and not very busy and because I'm disabled and use a crutch, one of the staff I think maybe the manager offered to take me up to the village in the sites car what with the village being up on a hill, this very kind lady then walked with me as I walked around and into the 3 roundhouse, which gave me the opportunity to ask questions, one being on how when I was at school (long time ago now) I remembered being taught about the Saxons and round houses, and I remember being told or reading that there would have been a hole left in the roof above the fire to let out the smoke..............wrong, the roundhouse's on this site have no such hole, I knew that what I'd been taught was now thought to be wrong but I'd never really asked why, well as this kind lady told me, wish I could remember her name (I'm terrible at remembering names) the reason is had there been a hole above the fire the chances were they would have set the roof on fire, because of the embers being pulled upwards, well who knew, I in my own way had thought it was because as it's a thatched roof there would be possible little bugs and things and that with no opening the smoke passes through the thatch killing any little nasty thing like fleas 😄😄😄 well it might do that but that wasn't the reason she told me. Now at this point in this comment, or should I say book, it occurred to me I'm probably teaching my nan how to suck eggs, sorry if that's the case, but even if that's not the case I'm sure you will be doing your own research. If you've never been to Castell Henllys I highly recommend it. Well just to add really enjoying the videos, cant wait for the next guys. 👍👍👍👍👍

Also, that's not braising. Braising is when you sear the meat just until its brown and then half submerge it in the liquid, not just set it on top. Couldn't tell how slowly it was "braised" but it ideally should be very slow. Just a slight simmer.

I can never get that time back. I can only describe the experience as droll.

"...everything stops for tea!' I notice your problem (sigh.) I wouldn't object if, while I wasn't looking, you and Dustin used iron spikes instead of wooden pegs to fasted those first rails down!

I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face. Talking about cooking using the Dutch oven. It's an impressive Dutch oven indeed if you can cook food with the heat produced. Cooking with the Dutch oven doesn't seem to have negatively effected the flavour of the food either, which is fortunate 😖😅

Btw, the clay would work well on the sides of the building like cob. You probably already thought if that. At least you won't have to bring it in from your Dad's garden.

Do you think the clay helps with support of the beams any better than regular dirt?

Please don't think I'm taking anything away from Mike because what a fantastic channel and his attention to detail, especially with the camera work and filmogrophy is amazing - especially with the content he produces! HOWEVER! There's not enough of you watching these videos without giving Dustin a try at Bushcraft Tools! I actually got into TA Outdoors first and only know Dustin because of the viking series on here but these two are as wonderfully as entertaining as each other so if you want double the entertainment check out Dustin's channel :)

Loving this build. I wonder what's tougher to dig, clay or those roots. Still haven't forgotten that lamb copter or the spider mead. Looking forward to the next episode..... And please make sure that Dustin doesn't forget about the corned beef. 😊
