*HELP!* _All internet sources are saying conflicting information._ *If steel is just iron with less carbon...* Then why is iron more ductile then steel? Then why is high carbon steel less ductile then low carbon steel? *If steel is iron with carbon added...* Then why does cast iron have higher carbon then cast steel? Then why does cast steel exist, shouldn't it just be a different grade of cast iron?
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon where carbon is less than 2.1 percent by weight. Pure iron is quite soft, impurities can make it brittle. Steel cannot have less carbon than pure iron but can have less carbon than raw iron and pig iron, which is an intermediate product in the basic oxygen steelmaking process. Source: Wikipedia.
