@@LucanVaris +3 net is a legendary item! I don't see that breaking the game anytime soon. I'd sooner give out a Vorpal Sword, 29 strength belt of giant strength, armour of invulnerability of a invisibility cloak 1st. I read the Iron flask 1st time as random loot chart suggestion & said out loud ''there is no way I'm giving this to any table''. So gave a Moon blade out instead which made the elf happy & gave the underpowered barbarian 29st belt of strength was not as hard to deal with as you think for he did a lot of suboptimal choices. Party truly believed I gave them the better deal of loot as I gave extra items, the innocence.

@@arnijulian6241 To be fair, there _are_ exceptions to the rule, much like how Weapon of Warning proves that not all Uncommons are weak. Comparing the general selection of Legendary items to the general selection of, let's say, Uncommon and below, however, kinda tells you what the general rule of thumb happens to be. As an example, let's compare that Moonblade of yours to a Moon-Touched Sword. A Moonblade can be the Macguffin for an entire campaign, as one could be seeking out the heir to the Elven King, in order to deliver a custom version of the blade to its rightful owner. The players are then whisked away into an all-out battle between light and darkness, with that sword tipping the scales near the very end, once the Elven Prince is reunited with the blade of his people, passed down through generations immemorable. In comparison, a Moon-Touched Sword... can be an Artificer's plaything by level 2, and doubles as a glowstick.

My players got two of these as a souvenir from a non cannon dream adventure. The ones they got works slightly differently. It can only catch beasts or monstrosities but the plane of origin doesn't matter, to catch something they need to role higher than the creature's current HP with a d100 (using the higher of two rolles if the creature has a condition) and it's friendly towards the whole party but doesn't follow commands when it's distracted by something. In one of the Pokéballs they have a dinosaur, the other is still empty because they always forget to use it before killing all the enemy monsters.

I like the idea of an iron flask being used to capture what would normally be a creature of pure enmity, like a Tarrasque, Demilich, or any elder elemental, or a sapient creature like a regular lich or something like a Solar. These are creatures, ones you're even likely to encounter at legendary tiers of play, and are even possible to find in the flask upon discovery (legit a 1% of finding a Solar and a 2% chance of finding any elemental). Because each time you resummon them they remain friendly, you just have something that used to be hellbent on spreading ruination or something that despises you as their warden but is compelled by you to do menial labor.

The creature in the Flask has food and aging covered but they still have to sleep. So you can rotate for a bit but at a certain point the creature has to sleep. You can use spells to help with this (dm allowing) but eventually they will see combat effectiveness drop to the point that having them fight may be an issue. The other issue is that upper plane creatures if released may immediately call to it’s friends not to eve attack you but just to call home. And if a Solar says hey I was stuck in an iron flask that may or may not cause a real issue what with good being all - power of friendship and then you try to put them back in again. So make sure you immediately tell them to not call anyone else if you let them out

I put a Flask into a game I ran, which had a Death Slaad in it, the players released it to help them fight a Death Tyrant and after a few rounds the Arcane Trickster/Divination Wizard realized he could use the flask and the 2 he rolled that day to just capture the Tyrant instead. (In retrospect, I should have given it Legendary Resistance but they had just acquired the Flask and had no must save effects up until that point.) They told the Slaad to piss off and, much later, ended up having to fight the Slaad, in Limbo, to stop it from ascending to a White Slaad and coming to exact it's revenge on the city, and more specifically the cities' Archmage, an old High Elf wizard, that had imprisoned it many decades prior. Sometimes Iron Flask can ruin a game and sometimes it can shape a really cool story.

As a slight bonus tip/suggestion, if your target has the ability to cast Polymorph (or Wildshape) on itself, you can turn them into a creature with Wisdom low enough for the Iron Flask to be much more of a guaranteed recapture. For example Triceratops (CR5) only has 10 Wisdom. While T-Rex(CR8) has 12 Wisdom. BOTH have only 2 Intelligence (Given too low for something like Suggestion, but still. Think about it).

I once planned a way to capture another PC (The Monk) after the campaign was over because the grand prize of the campaign is immortality, and the Monk is probably going to betray my PC at some point. So I looked at the Iron Flask and decided that the best course of action was using (probably several) Hypnotic Patterns until she was dozed and then put her in a bag of holding, using Rope Trick to carry her to an extradimensional space and then use the flask. Once inside the flask, throw her in a demiplane using a spell scroll and voilà, she's essentially dead. She's honestly a loner so nobody would miss her. TL;DR I couldn't kill the Monk, but an eternity trapped in another dimension with nobody to rescue you is basically the same.

You can capture any creature, regardless of what their home plane! If you use polymorph on the creature to turn it into a space eel, that is a beast that is native to the Astral Sea, not the material plane. You can then use the flask since they have been turned into a space eel! The polymorphed creature will return after an hour, so it will revert to its base form from within the flask. Iron Flesh 2nd Level Spell Spell School: Transmutation Components: S, M (a lead bead) Cast Time: 1 Action Duration: 1 Min You magically harden your body into metal, granting you increased durability against damage. While Iron Flesh is active, the following effects apply: 1. You gain resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing Damage. You also gain vulnerability to Lightning damage. 2. Your body weight is quadrupled, your movement speed is halved, and you can't fly.
@elliotbryant3459
@elliotbryant3459 Год назад
I think that this might be more appropriate as a level 3 spell, 2nd level slots become a cheap commodity. Even at 3rd it should probably have concentration. The lighting vulnerability is pretty easily avoidable. Alternatively, in place of resistance you could instead have the spell give you a large bonus to your AC [+5?] with the bonus only applying to attacks that deal the B/P/S damage types. This makes it so it's harder for attacks to even effect you while in effect. I could see that maybe being a level 3 range-self, [no conc?] spell, or a level 3 range- [touch? or 30'?] w/ concentration spell. . Might want to add "You can't be forcefully moved by effects like forceful winds or creatures 1 or fewer size categories larger than you" given the weight increase. This text would answers the likely question about cheesing the movement penalty by using a regular mount or being grappled by a rogue/monk/tabaxi ally. Notes of nitpicking: 1.) It might be simpler mathematically to go the petrified route and have weight increased by a factor of 10. It would kind of be closer in accuracy too [iron has density of 7.8g to the body's 1.01g per cubic centimeter]. 2.) Coal or an iron bead/ore might be more thematic for the material component given the name [lead is a very soft metal]. 3.) "Range: " is missing from the description. But I figured it would be "self" given the description. text.
@chrismanuel9768
@chrismanuel9768 Год назад
@@elliotbryant3459 Lead is a soft metal, sure, but it's still harder to cut than flesh, and it's got a ton of mass density. Makes sense for making a person really heavy and difficult to move, plus resistant (but not immune) to physical damage channels. I'd remove the lightning penalty altogether. It's not like metal is "more vulnerable" to being electrocuted than meat. If anything, metal is less effected. I'd probably also just make this an expensive magical potion you can craft that takes rare components with a built in material cost and prep time (like a week). Spell slots of any level become pretty disposable at higher level, especially when you can get in frequent rests.

They can only get into the Material Plane when someone travels to the NEP and it trades places with them, trapping them there until the Nightwalker is lured back into the NEP. I wanted to see what they'd do with this: Try to defeat the Nightwalker so they'd have a usable Iron Flask? Try to send it back to the NEP and rescue whoever was trapped there? It says the creature is friendly to you for an hour, and doesn't say "unless you or your allies attack it". However, it still defends itself if attacked, so trying to put it back in the flask could cause it to attack the user, even though going in the flask itself isn't likely to cause it's death.
@delta3244
@delta3244 Год назад
If you command it to do something which is not likely to cause its death, it follows your command. It only defaults to defending itself in the absence of valid commands.
@bskec2177
@bskec2177 Год назад
@@delta3244 Well, in that case, couldn't you just command it to go back in the flask? it would obey, and auto-fail it's saving throw. Also, it could be argued that going back into the flask over and over would eventually result in the creature being put in a fatal situation, and so going back in would likely result in the creatures death, so obeying the "stay still: command no longer becomes a valid command, this allows the creature to defend itself from repeated attempts to make it go back in the flask. The "likely to result" phrase is kind of open to interpretation here - and any command that looks like you are trying to force it back in the flask becomes invalid once it's obvious that's what you are trying to do.
@delta3244
@delta3244 Год назад
@@bskec2177 Yes, you could just command it to go back in the flask. One could argue that getting into fights over and over again would eventually result in death, but you can command the creature to help you in fights. More to the point, an action with a 10% chance of death is not likely to result in death, but doing 10 of that action is. In spite of this, you could command an attempt of such an action once every six minutes, since each command is not likely to result in death. "any command that looks like you are trying to force it back in the flask becomes invalid once it's obvious that's what you are trying to do." Where in the rules is that said?
@bskec2177
@bskec2177 Год назад
@@delta3244 because if you using the creature to fight, going back in the flask is likely to result in death. Therefore any command to go back in the flask become invalid. If you are just bringing the creature out to ask for advice, or help in a non-vombat situation, then going back in the flask isn't dangerous, and maybe it would obey that.

Wait, but RAW, it says that you target a creature. Not that you target a creature native to a different plane. So if you're on the material plane, you can point this at an orc and the orc just goes in the bottle without making a save. But if you point it at a blinkdog native to the feywild, then the creature gets to make a WIS save.
@johnkneeshaw8008

I don't think that you can use Rope Trick or so like that. The spell description says that the target must be on a different plane of existence and an extradimensional space isn't a plane of existence. In fact, if you are at a place that is not a plane of existence, you cannot trap any creature at all with an iron flask. By the way, I don't think that a demiplane is a plane of existence as well. Iron flasks given by me as a DM will certainly have the restriction that once a creature succeeds its saving throw against being trapped, it cannot be affected again for one hour. So thanks for this video, I wouldn't have thought of that.
