The lyrics are blatantly obvious; Brad always asks 'what is this song about' and can't take his eyes off the lyrics and needs to understand a song in every minute bit of detail. And yet when this obvious story is laid out word for word, he still doesn't get it. Words like 'Cree' 'Indians' 'Redskins' and 'Plains' are pretty huge clues, maybe Brad just isn't interested in US history! Not sure what was more frustrating/annoying, Brad's reaction or these bloody awful lyric videos he keeps finding. Wrong words in places and needing to tell us when it's a guitar solo, or writing 'Yeahhhh-Yeahhhh' and 'Ahhh Ahhhh' etc. They are like lyric videos for 5 year olds, and I wish I could kick all the dumb idiots who make them!

Great reaction as usual. It's about colonial America essentially stealing the land from the Indians and driving them into the hills. Not sure what inspired them to write it though. It was credited to their bassist Steve Harris, who obviously had a solid understanding of European and American colonization. I always liked the composition of it. First verse from the perspective of the Indians, second verse an American cavalry soldier and the 3rd an outside narrative.

1:00 Brad seems to struggle with the idea that an artist would sing from another person's perspective. Actually I think it may be a carryover from rap/hip-hop, where the artist always assumes their own perspective. I've noticed that rap fans generally struggle to grasp bands like Tool (who frequently assume the perspective of someone else, even someone they hate). Rap has always been about self-representation first and foremost.

Also in most rock songs. Most stuff is typically "Here's what happened to me, here's my POV." Maiden and others are like, "I just read this interesting thing." @Gavin Kisebach Well you said it. That has been on my thought like forever , ever since I saw first hip hop fan reacting to metal song. Also another note, them pausing the song also giving me hip hop vibes, because of the habbit ( assume) hip hop fans leaning more on lyrics then on music. The is the most direct difference between two genres ...Metal focusing on music while hip hop on lyrics. My thesis is that because of it (listening song without pausing), good portion of experience of listening to metal song is lost to the listener.

This is basically a song about Native Americans in the 19th century and what they went through. When they sing the chorus "Run to the Hills" and you hear Bruce singing high and low at the same time it is very pleasing because the notes are harmonics. In elementary school in the '70s, I was fed this idea that the Europeans landed in a "New World" filled with savages and wilderness. According to those history books, they did the continent a favor by taming the savages and bringing them civilization. This was further reinforced by the Cowboy-Indian conflicts that were so prominent in the westerns that were frequently airing on the weekends. Hearing this song for the first time in middle school made me realize that there is a completely different side to this story that had been completely neglected by our schoolbooks. I remember a schoolmate bringing this up in social studies class and my school teacher (who was one of the nicest ladies I've ever met) awkwardly acknowledging that there was, in fact more to this story than what our schoolbook was presenting.

Or "Uprising", "Ghost Division", "Bismarck"... Sabaton is basically five overenthusiastic Swedish history teachers that got together and said "hey, let's form a metal band so we can reach a wider audience!"

This is my favorite Iron Maiden song , I'm half First Nation Native Indian in British Columbia. This song hits home. We are going through alot right now here in Canada and our secret history. Of Residential schools they are up to over 6000 un marked Graves of native children that have been found and there will be lots more. Both my Grandparents were in these schools where they were beatin and raped and tortured. They lived but so many didn't.

It really makes me cry to hear that. It is a tragedy that people of today believe the lies that are taught in schools and fed to them by the media. I find it disheartening when I read comments that actually try to defend or justify white settlers. The common theme in their thinking is that it's just the way humans are, and that's the way it will always be. So so sad.

From the third Iron Maiden album The Number of the Beast. First album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals replacing Paul DiAnno and the last with Clive Burr on drums. Burr earlier played in Samson with Dickinson and later in Gogmagog with DiAnno, Jannick Gers who later joined Iron Maiden plus a couple of guys from Whitesnake and Motorhead. Burr was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He died in 2013. RIP.

Iron Maiden are the best of British heavy metal. I've been a fan since 1980. They are very melodic and Bruce has a very theatrical voice, inspired by many including Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillian. It's time you watched them live. Scream for me Lex! Scream for me Lex!! Up the Irons!!!

@Penderyn Lewsyn No offence meant, but it was known as The New Wave of BRITISH Heavy Metal and Iron Maiden are the best example of this in my opinion, hence my comment. I am directly descended from an ancient King of Ireland and I have relatives in Scotland and Wales, so I respect all UK nationalities, my friend

You guys are correct. This song, like most of Iron Maiden, are telling stories. Stories of a battle, or genocide(such as this one of the Native Americans), or a struggle or perseverance. I've seen almost every metal band since the 80's that's been worth seeing, and yes, Lex, you would love seeing them live. Their stage show props help tell the stories, also. Greatest live band I've ever seen...

I believe this song is about European settlers and colonists coming to the "New World" and massacring the natives. Iron Maiden are definitely deep into historical themes. They are very well educated and incredibly well read. Not to mention superb musicians.

The 1st verse of the song tells the story from the perspective of the Native American “Indians” then it switches to the perspective of the “white man” and doesn’t paint a very pretty picture. This story of man conquering man to take their land and resources, while not pretty is one that repeats throughout the history of men. When the thirst and greed becomes more than just about survival. We don’t wish just to survive, but to thrive. Often meaning taking from others to gain. War is hell, but it makes for great story telling, especially in the context of hard rock and heavy metal. As others have mentioned Steve Harris the bassist is the primary song writer for Maiden and the lyrical ideas come from books as an avid reader of historical fact and fiction as well as sci fi and fantasy. We’ll continue to try to learn from our past otherwise we’re doomed to repeat it, which unfortunately more often than not seems to the case. Ugly history or not, as a “white man”:of then US, I am a benefactor of it and can think of many worse places to have been born. Interesting when you stop to think about how for many just the place you are born into the world, your environment, can dictate much of your life and shaping your experience and who you are.

I was in San Antonio in 2009 or so during Thanksgiving walking around downtown. There was a street festival going on and I heard a live band playing the Trooper. I walked over and it was sone 10-11 year old kids playing. Then they broke into Run To The Hills after that. I videoed most of it. Very cool to see people still discovering this music. I saw the original Iron Maiden open up for Judas Priest at Sam Houston Coliseum in 1980 on the British Steel Tour. Iron Maiden had just released the Killers album

@@jmhaces Not my country, not Maiden's country. I said 'political' because current american climate. I say political because of Americas current success in making such historical events 'political' in current day. The Trooper doesn't really annoy the Crimeans, and Aces High doesn't really upset the Germans, but Americans are a bit sensitive about 'raping the women and wasting the men', historically speaking, wouldn't u say?

This song is fitting today. It is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The uncovering of the bodies of indigenous children buried at residential schools have been forefront in our news all year. The children were forced into these schools to try to assimilate them and they fell prey to horrific abuses by both the government and churches of the day. People on both sides of the political spectrum disagree about the best way to move forward. But anyone without some empathy for those children and the families they were ripped away from, doesn't have a heart.
