The X Factor was the first Iron Maiden album I ever bought. I remember thinking 'Wow this is so dark' and really loving Blaze's vocals. It's only when I went through the rest of the band's catalogue that I realized how different it sounded to 'typical Maiden'. To this day, it's one of my favorite Maiden albums, and ,in my opinion, one of the most underrated ones.

The first Maiden song I ever listened to was “Sign Of The Cross” way back in 1995 when the X-Factor album came out. I saw them live in -98 for the first time. To me, Blaze isn’t “the guy who wasn’t Bruce“ but a significant part of the Maiden history and an important part of my own teenage years in the 90s when Maiden wasn’t particularly popular. I liked Blaze’s baritone voice from the start, and enjoyed the darker side of the X-factor album too.

I’ve always wished Blaze the best in his career since he left Maiden. I don’t think he was a very good fit for the band, but he is NOT a bad singer. Far from it, actually. When he’s at the helm of material written to his strengths, the man can absolutely rock the house. Just because he’s completely different from Bruce in vocal style doesn’t make him a bad singer. And to his credit, just about ANYBODY would have come under criticism for being the frontman that had to follow Bruce, whether they sounded similar or not, so it’s hardly fair to hold that against Blaze. I think he gave it his best, and he should be commended for keeping the band going until they could pick up momentum again.

Blaze is such a humble, genuine guy. Personally, I really like the albums he made with Maiden and having listened to a lot of his material post maiden I personally think he's a great singer. His voice seems to have improved over the years. There's a richness to it now that wasn't there in his time with iron maiden. A mate of mine met Blaze in Liverpool a few years ago. He could not speak highly enough of him. Said he was friendly, very down to earth, good sense of humour and had time for each and every person who wanted to speak to him. I wish him only the very best.
@hakancarlsson2881
@hakancarlsson2881 3 года назад
His voice wasn't a fit for Maidens material. I think Harris wanted to do a different take on their music from Bruce when hiring Blaze but he didn't take advantage of Blazes strengths at all.. The songs where still basically made for Bruces voice. Blaze proved that when he released Silicon Messiah after leaving Maiden. Such a great record! And his voice is powerful and a perfect fit!

I think Blaze got an raw deal with Maiden, not only filling Bruce's shoes, but the fact that he had a totally different vocal register, yet the band took him on knowing that and didn't change the key of the songs to accommodate him. If they'd drop things to E flat or D, he'd have probably coped better!

Bruce is the greatest ever metal vocalist IMO but Blaze is insanely talented and really understates his time with Maiden and his craft as a whole, the fact that he was chosen to fill such huge shoes in the first place speaks of his talent, Maiden has the distinction of having three world class vocalists, I love his Albums with them.

I'm coming around to those 2 records he done. I admit I'm bias to bruce because he was my childhood I was into paul but bruce made more of that epic tone vocally. Blaze came in at a bad time after fear of the dark he really imo didn't stand a chance. But now as of Yesturday I've listened to more of his 2 maiden albums more than the classics so there u go

Wonderful person, wonderful artist, I really liked the Blaze Bailey era in Iron Maiden, they seemed to have more fun as a band, although the sales were not gigantic. It was not Blaze Baileys fault of course because the whole music industry was undergoing a crisis. During this era they made legendary songs like Sign of the Cross, Virus, Doctor Doctor, Man on the Edge etc. I am sure it was not the decision of his bandmates to sacrifice him, they had a very good connection as a band....the record company and the managers wanted this reunion. Its sad because during Virtual XI they were still a band, after the reunion they became a product and as a product they stopped producing quality music... After 1999 there is not even ONE Maiden song I can remember.....

Blaze is a phenominal Vocalist and a class act, the only problem for him was that he was filling the shoes of that greatest that ever lived, otherwise it would be a very different story, i think similar about Di'anno, he was also REALLY fucking good, any other vocalist but Bruce and i think Maiden as a Band (probably not the guys individually) would of faded into obscurity.

I stopped really listening to maiden when fear of the dark came out (irony I really like it now) because that was the end of the classic 80s period. This guy in Maiden was Harris ' idea during a very hard time. He went through a deep crisis and calling Blaze for vocals was a result of Steve wanting to become a kind of father figure for someone. Then Steve dropped him like a hot potatoe. But he had to. Blaze's vocals perfectly fit the beautiful X-Factor Album, but nothing else. I like Blaze for being this humble and thankful but Harris betrayed him and used him in my opinion. It would be better for Blaze if Harris had chosen a mature voice after Bruce. Maybe then Bruce had never come back at all.

I’m gonna go ahead and say it, X Factor is a good album. Not one of my absolute favorite releases from Iron Maiden mind you but a good album nonetheless. Blaze has received way too much crap for his vocals during his time in the band when in fact he actually did a pretty commendable job. No he’s nowhere near Bruce Dickinson but the thing is very few are. Blaze did a good job in Iron Maiden, the problem was the shoes he had to fill were simply too big.

Blaze Bayley in my opinion is a tragic hero in this story and in general in heavy metal history. He was chosen by IM who knew his limitations. And still instead of giving him better material for example from Di Anno era, they were torturing him with Hallowed Be Thy Name and others.. And they guy is not a bad singer. They just wish him to keep up with Bruce, which is recipe for frustration and ultimately failure. I love Maiden but I see the only fault on their side there. Also it's not elegant to bent the truth in official Mick Wall biography about Blaze being fired. The truth is that they knew Bruce is coming back whole '98 tour was still in its final stage
