@@markwoollon lol what a way to over simply what he was saying. Yes any SoundCloud asshat can come up with a story to their song. But Iron Maiden comes up with a *good* story that is told *well* as it transitions with beautiful instrument playing. Cmon man.
Bruce Dickinson...vocalist of Iron Maiden...PhD in music... Director of marketing...DJ...Commercial pilot...Screenwriter...Fencer...Writer...Professor of History...Businessman...and survive to cancer! That guy should really be kinghted by the Queen or something...
You guys are great. I don’t listen to metal, and this middle-aged white mother of two has never heard of half the music in the other genres you review, but damn if I didn’t just listen to Iron Maiden and say, “wow, that IS beautifully written!” Thanks for changing this mind. Looking forward to going through your other stuff.
Bruce, Adrian, Janick, and Dave have all written great songs for Iron Maiden, but Steve is definitely the best songwriter . Steve is the only band member that cannot be replaced because he created the band. Iron Maiden has always been his creation. He has a great eye and ear for great talent and got some of the greatest musicians to join his band. I even love the Paul and Blaze years.
Dudes! That was a beautiful deconstruction of the poetry of this song! It's wonderful to see open minded people willingly exposing themselves to a style they don't normally listen to such as metal and take the time to analyse it thoroughly! Love your vids! Keep up the good work!
I thought this was going to be 2 stoners who listen to rap judging metal. Quite the opposite. 2 intelligent guys listening to different types of music. I can appreciate this. Well done lads. Greetings from a maiden fan. 🇬🇧
They got that bang on. I remember seeing Maiden in concert 10 years ago and they turned the stage into a set for almost every song it was incredible. War scene for the trooper, Egypt for powerslave, dark and scary setting for fear of the dark.. etc
LOL!!! Maiden is extremely good at it, but if you can listen to metal from the 80's-90's and not notice it, you are not doing metal any justice. Metal is the counter-culture to the "barbie world, greed is good" illusion of the 80's-90's. Many see metal as a scene of hopelessness and despair, but it is exactly what slayer once said, "we put it in your face so you notice it and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT". Here is your problem, fix it!! Metal has more hope and desire for the world to be better than most other forms of music, and that's it's real power, to make you THINK.
Anyone else think that after this video finished being made, they went out and hugged a loved one, or called a relative they ain't talked to in a while?
Diana Watson only because they're not yet born again in the spirit of the risen living Christ Jesus. They have doubts hence the crisis some of us have no doubts we have a confident assurance of things hoped for ;-)
I really dig the comment, "Consciousness is the ultimate gift and the ultimate curse." Makes perfect sense yet I've never thought of it in those terms. Fantastic way of putting it.
Zulamun 100% true... Even many of their own fans miss this fact no matter how many times the members of the band say it, spell it out and Execute the plan.
@@alexg1517 I was lucky enough to see the show that opened their 2012 tour in North Carolina -- and Cooper was the opening act. It practically felt like being at a high-tech opera
Steve Harris, bass player, founder of Iron Maiden, primary songwriter, is a fan of old English Literature....."Hallowed Be Thy Name" is old English poem.
I'm absolutely loving watching you guys watch these songs I've banged my head to for decades. Your honest, nuanced reactions take me back to when I first heard these songs. As someone else said in a comment on another video, it's like we're vicariously hearing these songs for the first time all over again through you. Thank you for that.
I came back to rewatch this video months later after seeing a couple of the commentators say they think this was a negative reaction. This was anything but a negative reaction - certainly, it brought out the philosophical side in George and Ryan, and they definitely seemed to appreciate the poetry, skill, musicianship, songwriting, and artistry that went into the song, and found the whole to be beautiful, with the worst they could say about it being that it might be a bit dated, the subject matter not being not being to their taste at the time, and the song being something that might have to grow on them. I didn't realize it until I saw the reaction the first time, but Harris' lyrics, whether the song was contrived that way or not (I suspect not), actually do an excellent job of conveying the false courage and then all of the stages of grief the story's character would go through in the hours before death - you see elements of shock and panic, denial, anger, bargaining/reasoning, and depression in the way the character's words contradict what was said before, before settling on acceptance, before the character's life flashes before his eyes during the solos leading up to the death at the End.... Obviously, this reaction was early in their metal reactions career, and they'd basically reacted to only a limited selection of thrash before this, so I wonder if George and Ryan would be willing to come back and react to this song again some day, now that they've seen a wider range of metal, and have had the new perspective of some time and distance to re-review the song with?
These guys fresh perspective really underscore why Iron Maiden are the kings of heavy metal. Theatrical, Epic, super dope, excellent writing, killer guitar riffs, these guys can see this with their fresh eyes. And even though they wouldn't add this to their playlist, they appreciate it. My husband is not a Metalhead, but even he appreciates Iron Maiden. They really are the best at what they do, and have been for over 30 years.
Im not sure you can compare them like that. Metallica is much more about raw energy and basicly pushing you in to your seat with their music. Maiden is about creating an atmosphere with big epic lyrics, riffs etc. At least for me.! My opinion. :)
Love the reaction to the first hearing of a song I've heard a thousand times, trust me lads, listen a few times and it becomes epic. It's not a song in the usual format of verse, chorus/verse, chorus etc, maybe that's what puzzed them at the end as to whether they 'liked' it.
I already love Iron Maiden, and have since the 80s, but watching someone experience it for the first time reminds me of why I got into Maiden in the first place. Glad I clicked on this.
That's why I always enjoyed the Fine Bros channel, despite their scummy ways. They give you a wide group of amazing reactions. Kids listening to Maiden for the first time is the coolest thing I've seen.
Nathan Fleet I know lots of people hate reaction channels but I love seeing them experience music/movies/games for the first time. It's really interesting and gives you a fresh perspective.
@@laurie5925 I saw them in the 80s on Powerslave and Somewhere in time. Then 5 or 6 more times. Jones Beach, and I also saw them in Brooklyn, Newark, and most recently in Hartford this past summer. Saw them in Holmdel on the Somewhere Back in time tour. That was a very memorable show! Rare no pit show and I had 4th row center. In the fan club too. Totally worth it for the presales alone!
Daniel Guidry I saw them live in Phoenix in 85' outdoor show, 42000 people. it was awesome!!! the recorded live after death a few weeks later in long beach. so our set list was the same as that album. great show!
You guys basically described an Iron Maiden show without ever having been to one! Haha! Very theatrical, very epic performances. Love your vids, glad you picked this legendary band, keep 'em coming. - Up the Irons!
Okay, I've never understood the need for these 'reaction' videos, but as a lifelong Maiden fan, I had to watch. Damn, you guys nailed it. Thank you! You need to do Caught Somewhere in Time, paying close attention to the guitar solos by Dave Murray and then Adrian Smith. It's unbelievably powerful. And then you should REALLY do Number of the Beast. I'd love to see your reaction to that masterpiece.
pyromaniacmatt that's how I was until I saw the Walk video they did and now I'm kind of hooked it's great seeing the reactions and thoughts. It's great to see they are into music in general that's what makes them so good.
I was thinking the same, I thought maybe they'd have a bad reaction to this (most people that I know do coz they just have a different music taste) but damn they hit the nail on the head
Bruce Dickinson the vocalist of Iron Maiden it's really awesome for him to be in his sixties he still has his voice together not like others...Rawk!On Iron Maiden
Man you guys picked up on it right away! Maiden is about theater, opera, literature, poetry, story telling, and the big show! Nicely done. I love that Maiden inspires such discussion, and it does. When you guys get the chance, watch the live Fight 666 version of this. My request, Iron Maiden The Ryme of the Ancient Mariner. It might help to read the original poem from the 1700's first for context and to see how well you think they interpreted it.
I Was Just Gonna Say Much Of Both Harris & Dickenson Love Appreciate A Lot Of Old English British & Contemporary Poets & Literature & They've Always Both Incorporated Their Inspirational Songwriting As Well As Into All Of Their Highly Theatrical Stage Performance Since They Were 1ST. Formed As A Band.... Their Shows Are Much Loved & Appreciated For This.... Just Like In Reference To "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" By The Poet Samuel Coleridge...
Maiden has been considered as the "thinking man's band". Not as intricate as a Megadeth, not as heavy as Slayer, Not as flashy as Judas Priest... but if you know history, and/or read some of the classics, Maiden will resonate with you.
To be honest, that sounds more like a band that requires a highly specific chunk of knowledge to be able to appreciate (similar to how some rappers require a highly specific chunk of knowledge to be able to appreciate). You can lack a highly specific chunk of knowledge and still qualify as a "thinking man", just saying. I'm sure you didn't mean your comment that way, but I just wanted to say this for the benefit of some of the readers who might be misunderstanding.
Yup. I had my ex who was an English teacher who hated heavy metal actually consider playing Maiden in a few of her English classes because of the historical lyrics.
I believe that by stating that a knowledge of history and reading the classics actually qualifies as a "specific chunk of knowledge". Maiden isn't incident specific, or tied to a certain location. History, movies, books television- all things that will, to get the full experience, require you to delve deeper into than just a quick google search, or a dust jacket review. So, I say, bring on the misunderstandings! Bring them on, but be prepared to do the research.
Iron Maiden's live shows are among the best theatrical productions ever performed. They're one of the few bands that is even better live than in the studio.
It's so funny that you guys stopped the video to talk about how you were picturing him yelling to the Heavens right before the part in the song where he yells to the heavens. Keep up the good work. These videos make my day because of how genuine the reactions are.
Exactly, we need to drop this elitism in metal, it is a symptom of close minded stereotypes and severely inflated egos. There is soo much other amazing shit that will enrich your lives, please give genres outside of your comfort zone a chance, you won't regret it.
Hunnit Round Heath Yes, fuck metal elitists. Jazz is fucking amazing, Funk is fucking amazing, Blues is fucking amazing, Rock is fucking amazing, Rap is fucking amazing, even pop is fucking amazing. You just gotta find the best stuff.
Yup. It's why the Blaze Bayley years were still legendary. Clansman is one of their most epic pieces and Futureal is one of their best riffs imo \m/ maiden for life
"Yeah, he gettin' busy!" "That's hot!" -- I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that while listening to Iron Maiden, haha. I love these reaction videos and the fact you're so open-minded about types of music you would never usually listen to.
You guys are the best reaction page I’ve seen. You take the time to actually feel the music. You dissect it well. And you express your sentiments about the music quite well. Subbed.
I love Bruce but this rut that metal heads get stuck in with this elitist view of metal being the only worthy genre is quite frankly tragic, there is sooo much other shit out there that is incredible and the fact that you can't appreciate it is really sad. Take jazz for example, there is such intense skill involved and in a lot of ways you can draw comparisons to certain metal genres. Please don't be so close minded, you are missing out on a whole other universe of enjoyment and appreciation and your life will be so much better for stepping out of your comfort zone, just like anything else in life.
+Hunnit Round Heath....... You are correct. My two favorite "bands" are Iron Maiden and Tchaikovsky! Talent and artistry spans ALL genres of music.............
Keep it up guys. I wish every reaction channel was like you guys. The way you delve into the lyrics and go on tangents about them in really intelligent ways is amazing. You should do indians by anthrax
Great reaction guys. Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands. The vocals and lyrics have always been a reason I put them towards the top of my list of favorite metal bands.
Being a bass player, this is one of my favorite rock bands! Steve Harris, the bassist, had a hand in writing, composing, most of this bands hits! Us bassist are always overlooked. But in this band, the bassist was a major cog!
Damn! That's a huge blast from the past, I NEED to go listen to it now... I might as well fire up the live recording of Catch the Rainbow as well. There's my next half hour sorted. :-)
I've been thinking that for days, awesome that someone else did too! Although Hallowed and Stargazer are kinda similar in structure, so they probably won't do Stargazer.
1982...production is going to sound a little dated but what else had that power in 1982. And I'm surprised that neither of you made a comment about the lungs on that singer. You paused in the middle of Bruce singing "Lowww" always a highlight in this song for me. Song is very dynamic too starting melancholy and ending up balls out.
I was mixing my concepts of power as in power to move me emotionally and production. I should talk about those separately. Guitars by any band in this era will sound dated today. Power to move me, yes, those other bands listed do deliver heavyness that defines metal. I always say, if it's not heavy, it's not metal.
Yeah it's really strange to me that they essentially said *nothing* whatsoever about the singing, especially since at this point they've not heard anyone even sing close to how his singing is. Not any props about his power or how you can understand him, the melody or his range. Odd to me.
Iron Maiden have been around since 1975. They have 16 studio albums and performed something like 2200 Live shows. and have one of the most loyal fan bases you will ever see. The singer Bruce Dickinson is a Man of many talents and even flies the band around the world in their Iron Maiden branded plane. The bands lyrics vary. older songs are about history and war to name some lyrics.
When I see someone have a brand new reaction to something that I've known and loved for years, it somehow makes me feel like a proud papa. I think it's the good ol' "I know, right?" feeling boiling up. Hope I'm not the only one that thinks that way.
Maiden was my teenage years. Even since Paul Dianno...but Bruce -Number of the Beast -I was hooked - and to watch these hip hop guys analyze the very lyrics I did when I was young -...been feeling like laughing and crying at the same time -...Farmer G -you're not the only one
My first exposure to Maiden was when I borrowed my brother's Somewhere In Time tape, then I went out and bought Seventh Son... I must have played that tape a thousand times. First thing I got hooked to was the lyrics, so I love the analysis. I hope you guys are listening and hope you do more songs. With exception to a few misses, most of the Maiden song lyrics are gold.
this is what happens when a history proffessor writes lyrics.take notice of every historical based track maiden recorded, every song is not only historically accurate, but also written in era correct speach and dialect.impressive
I can't believe I just found you guys. Hallowed is my favorite song on Earth. Iron Maiden is my favorite band. In fact, my name, TheTrooper97, is after their song The Trooper. I live in Vegas too! I was impressed by the commentary, and that's not easy for me. Def subscribing!
True story here. I was onstage in Elkhart Ind with my old band Structural Damage that night. We were taking a set break when someone came up and told me that Dimebag had been murdered. We got back onstage and announced that he had been killed and we covered “Cemetery Gates” in his honor, having only practiced it once previously. That night was the ONLY time we ever performed that song perfectly, with zero errors. G-d rest the dead.
you guy's absolutely get it! That is what the song is about. So great to see two black guy's giving a honest opinion on heavy metal music! I have black friends, and they would never even try to listen to this..lol..I really like your Rock reviews..
I shit you not I got a chill watching this.... somebody send these guys some metal t-shirts! I am in Vegas Veterans Day weekend I will buy these two brothers a drink if they are up for it
Act Of Arson you're a very opinionated person. No one should care who is better they are all good bands no matter what, one maybe heavier than the other and therefore these bands cater towards somewhat different audiences. No need to talk shit on one because whether it be Metallica, Megadeth, or Slayer, they have all wrote som killer songs. If I could give you some advice it would be to be more like these guys from Lost in Vegas. Open Minded individuals.
Still remember all the lyrics 33 years later, like when i was in front of my dads turntable listening and singing it all day, throughout all year. Every single word. Iconic song of classics
This is classic Iron Maiden. What I love about them is exactly what you guys pointed out, their lyrics & music really drag you into the song like you're there living it. You also nailed the theatrical nature of the band, watch some live videos (or better yet, see them live) and you'll be blown away, I guarantee it.
Did not see this coming but I'm literally less than 48 hours off of one the the hardest deaths I've experienced. What you guys were speaking about in this episode I needed badly to hear. I just thought I was clicking on a metal critique but goddamn thank you
Great reaction/review as always... Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the fact you two aren't afraid to analyse the lyricism and engage in some philosophical discussion -- it's a rarity and a treat to stumble across people that have genuine depth. I look forward to your reaction/review of 'Wretch 32 - Fire In The Booth, Part 3', lol :P
