The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the third battle of Ypres, was fought between July and November of 1917. The Battle of Passchendaele is one of the deadliest battles in history. The British Expeditionary Force lost 310,000 soldiers. General Haig was criticized for his persistence in spite of the fatigue of his men. The Germans lost about 260,000 soldiers for a total of more than 570,000 lives in one battle. The new sabaton album, Great war is due out in the next month or so, all 13 tracks are to be new music about WW1, I recommend the price of a mile and Galipoli from Sabaton in the mean time.

Entire towns were destroyed in that battle as well, including my greatgrandparents', who had to move elsewhere - first as refugees to Dieppe then up north to Ostend and Bruges.

Those numbers are total casualties; wounded, missing, desertions, captured, killed. You could get hit in this battle, be considered a casualty but still come back and fight again later. I would put the death toll at 100,000 British and about 70,000 German. Still staggering....

Fun fact: That awful cover art went into production by mistake. - It was just a mock-up that the artist did in 3D, he sent it to the company asking "this the sort of thing you're going for?" but they slapped it on the album immediately!! - The artist fully intended to FINISH THE DAMN ARTWORK but never got a chance. That's why he withdrew being credited for it!

Tickle the wikipedia on Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer. He's the kind of guy that makes you sit back and think "What am I doing with my life?" "Paul Bruce Dickinson (born 7 August 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, airline pilot, entrepreneur, author, and broadcaster. He is the lead singer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden and is renowned for his wide-ranging operatic vocal style and energetic stage presence." Airline. Pilot. Dude's certified for the 747-400, at minimum...

Yeah, on tours Bruce pilots Maiden's plane and takes them where they need to go. They've even made a documentary about that: Flight 666. BTW. Bruce has beaten throat cancer a few years ago. Not even cancer can stop this fuckin' dude.

There's a great recent documentary dealing with this subject (WWI) and the British involvement in it. It's called They Shall Not Grow Old, directed by Peter Jackson, and told by the men who fought it, as well as using film footage from over 100 years ago. Worth a look.

I had a relative who died in WWI at age 21. Paschendale was horiific. Many Brits and Canadians died there. My relative was a sapper. They dug trenches and dug under enemy trenches to lay explosives. They didn't last long. He died in a different battle than this, but it was all the same. It was muddy and bloody and horrible.

To British people of a certain generation, the Great war was learnt at school or from old family members, so the Somme and Paschendale are raw. Throwing soldiers into the jaws of death, but don't worry.. there are always more soldiers.. fighting 20 century warfare with 18th century tactics... I love this song man im 48 been lovn maiden since i 15 ... the guitar solo after the lyric words of "nervous wait for the whistle to blow rush of blood over we go" is just amazing its as if ... you can hear the screech of a "falling" shell as the young soldiers would of scrambled out of there trenchs ... then the guitar hits in as if "its the run for your lives towards the enemy trenches"

Billy, I didn't see anyone mentioned about Passchendaele, actual spelling - Battle Of Passchendaele occurred during WWI on the Western Front in Belgium from July to November 1917. Allies battling Germans. Both sides of the battle lost over 400,000 soldiers. I read that Steve Harris, bassist & founder is a history fanatic. Most of Iron Maiden's songs are about history in some form.

Got back into Iron Maiden this year. Haven't heard them since No Prayer For The Dying. Paschendale is a thoughtful and considerate song! The cover art is conceptually perfect but I wish they'd update it as a painting so it looks less Sims Chippendale. They still have time, I haven't gotten around to buying it yet. I dig your new intro B!! If you haven't already, please consider reacting to my favorite Iron Maiden song: 'Caught Somewhere In Time' {album version]. Peace out!

A lot of thoughts on this one. I think this is certainly the best maiden song post bruce dickinsons rejoining the band. I think if one believes that history is our collective soul, we must embrace the tragedy of what we are capable of, process it. And then of course, move forward with said knowledge. I think this is exemplary maiden. More poetic than anything from their older stuff. And at the end of the day, i think it begs for human reflection upon which of what we are capable. Its a nietszchean call to confront the abyss and knowing that it stares back at us.

Nice one Billy! If you want to do more war songs, then Magnum did a good WW1 song called Les Morts Dansant, and a less specific war song called Soldier Of The Line. Also, check out Under The Gun by Deep Purple. I wish I could say Iron Maiden were going a bit OTT in this song, but sadly, no. Passchendaele was an absolute horror show, with getting on for half a million casualties and made worse by rain that turned the battlefield into a sea of mud and water: there were cases of wounded men literally drowning where they fell.

Seeing your close friends being shot into pieces, with limbs flying all over the place.. Ugh. War is hell, and it's not even a cliche to be anti-war. No peace signs and hippie outfits or whatevs. Being anti-war should be the default position of all citizens, of all countries. Because it is brutal, evil, ugh. I am alive today because my grandparents somehow survived WW2, on two fronts even. And whenever anyone of us kids, or grandchildren and grand-grand as it is now brought up war-themed videogames and my gran heard that... Yeah, the immediate response was "you know nothing of the horrors of actual war, so just shush" yeh...

Your mind was just blown by these Genius Deep lyrics huh?? Now u know whenever some ignorant idiot that says metal is dumb and doesn't make sense or is Only Evil and Satanic.. now you'll know how wrong they are and how much they actually know of this beautiful and misjudged genre that is Metal and or Rock. Hey man you want another song about the Atrocity of War Try Voices from the War by Another LEGENDARY Band in the metal genre that basically was the key to the creation of Thrash and Speed metal MOTÖRHEAD them along with Maiden, Priest and Sabbath are the top most influential bands from the 70s during the new Wave of British heavy Metal towards the early 80s that influenced the next big 4 in the next metal subgenre to be born Thrash metal like Metallica Slayer Anthrax Megadeth Exodus Testament Overkill Sodom Venom Destruction Kreator Tankard etc. Plus Motörhead is my favorite band of all time I'm sure you'll dig the lyrics but I also hope you'll like the style If you're ready for a more Speed Raw n Dirty sound then Motörhead is your band to start with. Voices from the War try it ;)

According to Bruce Dickinson's book that is not the case. Bruce said the artist presented that as a rough draft, Steve Harris loved it so much that he wanted to use it as is. The artist was not happy with it and demanded his name be taken off the cover at. Bruce agreed with the artist that it wasn't good. Steve is the boss though.

Yeah unfortunately that is the cover "art". Why they didn't get the master Derek Riggs to paint them a great album cover for this album I'll never know. He was the artist behind all of the other albums, and many people got into Maiden through just looking at the album cover. This cover is an atrocity. It makes Iron Maiden seem like a nickel band. Hell even I can create a more substantial album cover, give me a day or two.
