“If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.” Love that line, especially knowing that Stark himself had no Iron Man suit in his first movie and had to rely on what he already knew in order to survive. He’s speaking from real experiences in not having it.

Nobody is talking about how Peter proved Tony's "If you're nothing without the suit, than you shouldn't have it" line. Peter was storming up to Tony ready to pick a fight when he thought it was just the suit. The moment he realized Tony was there in person? All that fight just vanished. Peter proved Tony's point; yes, the Iron Man suit is an intimidating sight to behold, but he wasn't scared until he realized it was Tony inside of it.

@amandap.1494
@amandap.1494 3 года назад
@@vetarlittorf1807 I don't think he doesn't understand I honestly feel like Tony is like Marvel's replacement for Uncle Ben. I think they played it this way because there is already multiple Spider-Man movies and wanted this one to be different plus it ties into the whole marvel cinematic universe better this way. That might make it worse in your eyes but I think they do understand the importance they just gave that role to Tony, he even dies and leaves Peter similarly.
@vetarlittorf1807
@vetarlittorf1807 3 года назад
@@amandap.1494 But that's the problem. You simply cannot replace Uncle Ben with Tony Stark. Because Stark never gives Peter a valuable lesson about responsibility. In fact, the MCU version of Spider-Man isn't even motivated by responsibility because he only wants to be a superhero for the thrills it brings him when in the comics he viewed his powers as a burden that forced him to fight for the helpless. "plus it ties into the whole marvel cinematic universe better this way." That's just another way of saying it's quantity over quality. Edit: Yes, I'm aware that No Way Home did respond to the criticism by having Aunt May teach Peter the same lesson, but aside from the fact that it's too little too late, it doesn't take away the fact that he should have learned the meaning of responsibility before he became a superhero. What MCU did to Spidey is the equivalent of having Tony Stark become Iron Man years before he witnessed the chaos his creations caused
@amandap.1494
@amandap.1494 3 года назад
@@vetarlittorf1807 Ok I see your point. I'm just pretty sure that it was a conscience decision to do it this way. (not saying a good decision) Like this Peter was definitely more light and idk mass viewer friendly but I do think they try to keep what's important. Like the second movie was right after Tony died and it basically all centered around Peter not wanting the responsibility Tony left him (Which is why he gave the glasses E.D.I.T.H. away.) Like I'm sure they understand what makes Spider-man, I just feel they're changing/substituting main plot points to try to get the same results.
@noahgonzalez1562
@noahgonzalez1562 3 года назад
@@vetarlittorf1807 You also need to understand that we’ve seen Spider-Man’s origin story twice already with Andrew and Tobey. And in the MCU Tony Stark is the supposed father figure that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has. In this scene you can tell that Peter looks up to Tony, he believed in him and gave him the chance to be something “better”. But like all Spider-Men he’s in way over his head. He doesn’t fully understand the responsibility given to him, he shouldn’t be like Uncle Ben or Tony Stark, he needs to be himself, keep his feet on the ground and his head out of the clouds.

One of my favorite parts in this scene is when Tony says “No, this is where you zip it! The adult is talking!”.. You can genuinely feel the emotion Tony puts out. We watched Tony Stark grow from billionaire/playboy/philanthropist into a responsible hero and team leader. Up until this point he’s never had children, and you can tell here he serves as a father figure to Peter. He genuinely cares about him, and the fact that he’s upset at how Peter handled the situation (probably because years before he would’ve done the same) shows how much he’s grown! It’s truly a great scene and some really great acting from RDJ. Hell, when he said that I even sat up straight like I was being yelled at lol.

Correct. The suit is just tools and support, not basic strength. Peter is only 15 and hasn't fully understood yet. If Peter doesn't know how to use his powers and how to fight through adversity, then the suit won't help anything. After all, he has superhuman strength, the ability to walk on walls, and spider sense. He must use his brain and use the environment to his advantage. He must also know his weakness. The fact that everything that Tony says to him from "I listened" and "I believed in you" to "I don't need your death on my conscience" was actually a genuine explanation like mature people discuss with each other, and involved constructive criticism like "If you're nothing without it you should not have it", really shows how good of a father figure he is. He could have told him to shut up and just give him the suit directly, but instead he didn't just assert his authority over him without letting him know he genuinely messed up.

He’s mad at Peter (and really scared for his safety, too) but in that moment, he sounds almost reassuring. Regardless of how scared and angry he is, he’s still the caring parent (or parental figure, anyway) figuring out the logistics of providing for the kid he’s committed to mentor. Even while he’s in the middle of scolding Peter and confiscating things from him, he’s still willing to put that on hold to make sure Peter’s needs are met.

This was always such a beautiful "father/son" moment to me. For many reasons. In my life, I can remember having been Peter looking at Tony as if he was a dictator. And I have been Tony, coming to the realization that I became what I never said I would become; my father. What’s amazing is Tony undergoes his own character development, from the time him and Cap are trading blows in the original Avengers. Tony, throughout the entire Infinity Saga, has to prove he’s not just a man under a suit. He relays this same lesson to his mentee. And when his time comes, he sacrifices everything to save the universe. Peter witnesses Tony fully prove that he is just as much of a hero on the inside as he is on the outside. Long after Tony is gone, Peter still struggles with his role as Spider-Man and still has things to learn, and before long, his world starts to crumble once everyone learns who he is. When everything reaches the point of no return, Peter, after witnessing his mentor sacrifice himself to save the universe, follows in his mentor’s footsteps and sacrifices everything, fully proving he’s as much of a hero inside as out, and finally becoming the Spider-Man he was meant to be, just like Tony taught him. It’s just too perfect, and absolutely amazing. This trilogy has been an amazing ride and the ending is the perfect bittersweet goodbye.

This whole scene was SO PERFECT at nailing the Dad/Kid relationship forever between these two AND the set up of Tony being essentially an absentee father who makes his kid feel like he doesn't take him seriously by not bothering to show up in person and only sending a remotely piloted Iron Man suit while distracted by a cushy lavish party earlier in the movie, combined with the clever audio distortion that makes his voice sound like he's talking on speaker phone, AND the brilliant flinch by Tom Holland that sells it like he thinks his dad is going to hit him, made Tony stepping out of this suit one of the biggest gasp moments of the entire MCU in the theater, as people in the crowd reacted like dad just stood up and got loud in a way that scared them.

@@konstellashon1364 While I do love the subtle nods to the fact that Tony was listening to all of Peter’s calls, both Tony and Happy could have handled it better. Happy let a lot of calls go to voice mail and didn’t respond to any of his messages. Yes, he passed on all of that to Tony, but he never made it clear that he was doing that, just one message could have solved the issue. Tony could have also let Peter know that he called the FBI. Just call him up and say “Hey, we got your messages about these powerful weapons, thanks for telling us, I let the FBI know and there on the way to intercept.” Peter was being reckless and acting like a child trying to prove himself, but Tony and Happy could have done better as well.

If you listen to that conversation again, Peter never clarified that the weapons were alien tech, and then stops trying to explain because he gets sidetracked by Moving Day. ▪Same as with the Feds, Peter's not following through, and has a kid view that no one else but a super can handle this. He's literally surprised that the FBI found out about the weapon deal, too, without him.

@@konstellashon1364 I agree that Peter is at fault with a lot of the situations, but do you deny the fact that if Tony was listening to Peter and called the FBI, the least he could have done is tell him? Even though Tony told him to stay out of it (which he should have), I can understand why Peter was feeling like he wasn’t being taken seriously considering after he was saved, Tony wasn’t even actually there, the reason given to why he should stay out of it was just because he said so, and to top it off he probably thought Tony considered the conversation so unimportant he just got in his car and hung up on him. Also, I disagree that they didn’t know that the tech being used was advanced considering when Tony saved him the first time he acknowledged that Peter went up against the “Flying Vulture Guy.” All I am saying is that both parties are at fault and both parties could have handled the situations better.

@@PrometheusD12 watch the playground scene again. After Tony said the Avengers wouldn't be involved, PETER changes the subject. So Tony thinks nothing more needs to be said, and gives his help the little people advice. Later on, when we see Happy call Peter, yes it did happen, Peter lied about what he's doing. "It's just a school trip." His secret investigation was selfishly motivated. His hope was to impress Stark, not just for the sake of the neighborhood.

The second Tony said "And I wanted you to be better." was when I finally realized how much he developed and matured over the course of the MCU. That in turn made it even more painful for me when he died in Endgame😭😭

@@Blueberry40 Exactly, at this point the only actual parental figure and blood relative that Peter had was Aunt May, but Tony takes on a more paternal role while also being fully aware of Peter's identity as Spidey, so Tony can mentor Peter both as a Hero and as more of a "father". I wouldn't be at all surprised for Peter and Morgan to end up developing a sort of brother-sister relationship as a result where an older & wiser Peter acts as a mentor for Morgan.
