Ron Metchis is a regular on our "Knowledge Bolide" weekly Hangouts. This video took him a long time to make since he takes us thru the time intensive work that goes into saving (stabilizing) and acid etching slices of an Iron meteorite that is rusty and in a state of active corrosion. These are slices of NWA 13855. I am listed as a main mass holder of this official Iron, IAB-MG meteorite from Algeria. Big thanks to Juan Aviles of Jurassic Dreams.
He provides details of his electrolysis setup for you to try yourself. The meteorite slice stays in the bath for multiple days in this case. Ron's tutorial takes us thru the acid etching prosses and how to ensure a stable and product. Care must be given. The finished product is well worth the efforts. Ron was able to reveal its remarkable Widmanstatten pattern thru chemical etching.
Meteorites are 4.5 billion years old. We may be the current curator of any given piece. It is your responsibility to maintain your collections. Join us weekly to learn more. Thanks Ron for your continued contributions.
