IRON MOUNTAIN VIA NORTH RIDGE | SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS | ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST

On August 27th, 2024, I took a hike up the North Ridge of Iron Mountain via the infamous East Fork San Gabriel River in Southern California's Angeles National Forest.
The hike starts at the Heaton Flat trailhead, and follows the creek 4.5 miles to the Bridge to Nowhere. At this point, any sort of trail becomes washed away by annual floods, overgrown poison oak, and a lack of any visitors besides miners and the occasional backpacker. Iron Mountain's North ridge reaches the canyon floor about an 1/8th of a mile past the Fish Fork confluence, where one essentially just picks a gully and ascends since there is no defined route.
The route was more difficult than I remembered. Then again, neither of the previous efforts were in 90+ degree heat. In my trip report (February 2018), I mentioned about 500 feet of dense brush and this time, I tracked more than 1000 feet sticking to (roughly) the same route.
From the base of fish fork, the route includes 2000 vertical feet of dense brush (over the course of about a mile), class 3 boulder scrambling over degraded granite, and over 4,000 feet of vertical gain in 2.5 miles.
It is the epitome of a true San Gabriel Mountain adventure and should be considered the ACTUAL most difficult single peak day hike in the San Gabriel Mountains.
Total distance: 18.5 miles
Total vert: 7,600 feet (roughly)
Device: Coros Vertix 2

Thank you so much for posting this! My heart has been broken since I watched Iron Mountain burning (from Ganesha Hills, 09/10/2024).. As soon as the winter rains come, the East Fork will fill with burnt mountain run-off, and likely the surviving canyon bottom ecosystem will be buried. I’m glad to got up there when you did.

Thank you for mentioning this. It's definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions. I was actually supposed to head to the Sierra when I did this trek. The weather wasn't even good, and I still gravitated toward this route. I'm glad I did. One last goodbye.

Great video! You totally nailed the point, especially when you mentioned how frustrating minors can be. Honestly, I couldn't agree more. They're always out here causing chaos, thinking they're invincible, like they own the world! I mean, what’s with their constant need for snacks? And don’t even get me started on their obsession with memes... it’s like they’re a different species! We should ban them from WiFi after 6 p.m. or something. Anyway, awesome content, keep it up!

No one is going to be able to hike this for a while. The whole area is currently nuking in the Bridge Fire. Glad you got it in before it was destroyed.

One good thing the fire will kill most of the rattlesnakes! You can extend the hike by going east up the ridge to Mt. Baldy.

@trvrsoutdoors
@trvrsoutdoors 18 дней назад
A lot of the reason I completed this hike during this heat wave was because I had left a cache on Allison saddle earlier in the year. It had some expensive crampons and water, which I planted for a spring accent on the San Antonio Ridge Traverse. When the Fork Fire happened, I thought I would lose my gear and decided to retrieve it before the next fire. There were two smart water bottles stashed with the winter gear. I would have made it without the bottles since I only ended up drinking half one, but it being there helped me feel secure about the entire ascent. If that wasn't there I might have turned back. I'm so glad I made thr decision to retrieve the gear since my hunch was right, and now this entire area will be under closure for the next two to three years.

Holy smokes! Iron Mtn. North Ridge. In the heat? Super impressive man.
@trvrsoutdoors
@trvrsoutdoors 20 дней назад
Thanks for recognizing that. I definitely pushed myself here with the heat. There were a couple of times I tried to take a break to cool down, only to find that I would just sweat more. I had no choice but to keep moving to reduce water loss. Insane.

Yeah, so I realize now that the thumbnail is a little clickbaity. I'm going to change it. This is definitely the hardest single peak day hike in the san Gabriel mountains, and up there with the hardest in SoCal, but it doesn't compare to Snow Creek or folly ridge.

Great video! BITD, I hiked Iron via Gold Dollar and Eagle Mine to San Antonio Ridge. Chossy 3rd class over to Iron - very scenic but a loss less difficult than the route you took. I have a suggested route for you - Islip Saddle, Hawkins, Copter Ridge, Iron Fork, Ross , Baden Powell and then back to the start. Thank you for posting these!
@trvrsoutdoors
@trvrsoutdoors 20 дней назад
So I've ascended Ross vis the east fork (up its sw ridge) and descended via Ross gulch and iron fork. I wanted to do that again. I'll look at the map and see what I can put together. I appreciate the recommendation. Hopefully, the closure doesn't affect these areas. That route sounds solid.
