When Paul Giamatti screams "A WOOL MERCHANT" you can sense the anger and frustration in his voice. You can feel his anger of being questioned by a simple merchant when he is the divine ruler. Superb acting.
He probably practiced a lot for this scene. If I was a ruler in this period that obtained his position through blood I would’ve been genuinely insulted that a wool merchant questions my faith
FUN FACT: Paul was VERY upset because they actually wore very itchy wool period outfits. Hence is angry venomous and deleterious retort to a WOOOOooll Merchant!😡
+Templarspartan yeah I can't think of Purefoy not being like his role of Marc Antony-coming into the room and greeting Marcus with "Brutus my old cock!" :))))))
He is not the only reason, but a great reason to. It has solid action scenes, thankfully lacking in CGI overload. The rest of the cast is good too, with Brian Cox among them. Paul rocks the house, but without him, it would still be a decent flick considering the small budget. The script is decent too. I liked how they used the pigs to blast the tunnels. No movie ever gets history 100% right, but there is some interesting info in here.
His performance is great, but overall it's still a good medieval action movie. The only weak part is Kate Mara's character, who spends the whole film wistfully wondering when she'll get the dick. She was wasted in that role because she's a great actress and her character served no actual purpose in the plot.
Then you are a total fool, movie had some of the best British, some of them classically trained actors in the world thank you very much. Charles Dance, Derek Jacobi, Mackenzie Crook, James Purefoy, Brian Cox, Jason Flemyng, Jamie Foreman
Whilst the film it self was a mish mash of random historical misconceptions and weird ideas Paul’s depiction of John was hands down one of the best representations of an English medieval king in cinema in my humble opinion.
That same speech at the end could be any sociopath justifying their crimes. "I had to, to preserve my sense of order!" But somehow, their judgement is always perfect...it's the world and people around them that's broken.
The story at the end of this scene is amazingly harrowing and understandable at the same time . So much so it stuck with John all his life as a lesson to be learned and remembered
louthegiantcookie That has more to do with the fact that, because he lost all English territories in France, he was the first king of House Plantagenet forced to live in England full time.
@@abeboy5433 all English kings after the Norman Conquest led by William the Conqueror were either of Norman or of French decent, so they spoke French up until Henry IV, I think. So for 3,5 centuries French was the language of the higher nobility.
PsychoticSpartan especially your distant cousins you elevated a generation or so back to the rank of duke decide to revolt (sigh) family loyalty is non existent back then lol
I loved all the practical gore and on-location filming in this. Great performance from Paul as usual. Overall, a solid little gem that’s equal parts historical drama/B-Movie
I really don't understand why RottenTomatoes gave this movie a low rating... I watched this movie, and enjoyed it really much. Acting done great, and the kings rant set the bar so high in the movie. I was impressed. I like this movie.
I AM THE BLOOD!!! I AAAAM GOD'S... RRRRIIIGGGHHT HAND!!! And you will NEVER! DICTATE TO ME HOW I AM TO BE A KING!!! That was fucking unbelievable. It's like Giamatti was channeling Napoleon Bonnaparte as interpreted by Looney Tunes.
@@samhamsord7942 Through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and using them as deterrent threats- and originally, as an actual weapon to almost-instantly wipe away over 100 thousand innocent lives. Sure thing, buddy.
@@Vistresian1941 Soo? Actually your 100 thousand sounds pathetically underrated, Although I don't believe there to be enough nuclear weapons to wipe out whole planet or even countries(as some claim), but there still more than enough to wipe out all major cities, and that would mean more than 50% of population in any country. I do agree though that nuclear weapons are fucking absurd, but still, USA was first to make it and bomb cities with elders and children, I think none should ever forget that. But then again, we don't see shit like WW1 and WW2 this day so gotta be grateful for world being less absurd this days, still crazy AF though((
If one is launched, all other countries will respond in tandem. That would create a chain reaction that would destroy every major city that contributes to that prosperity you mentioned, so yeah- they could very well end the planet in terms of civilization. And the 100k comment was in reference to nuclear weaponry used on Japan.
Very true. I might point out that the English monarchy has had numerous Henry's,Edwards, Georges and Williams. Yet the name John was never used by the English monarchy again.
Well, King John didn't earn all of his bad reputation. Yes, he was ruthless in collecting money but it was all to finance his brother wars and then his ransom.
@@grzegorzswist everyone loves to shit on John when Richard should have some of the blame too but obviously becuase he was serving God Christian scholars have made him look like a hero he was a great warrior king but that's about it
Paul has the ability to not only be king John, but also as him gaslight to shame that a thing like the magna carta ever existed to inconvenience him. Thats acting.
Austin Ng he definitely would, although the one portrayed on Bran's flashbacks delievered his lines so fucking well, I wonder how his overall acting would be
I would love it if Paul Giamatti were to suddenly pop up on Game of Thrones as Mad King Targaryen. He would be absolutely perfect. I know it will never happen, but I can dream.
Ironclad rocks. The best siege film ever made. Every aspect, the frustration, the disease, the starving people dwindling in numbers trying their best in a hopeless situation. Oh and the action! My god this film is brilliant.
it is just a fucking great movie!! the scene when king john get really mad at the baron and explane him that he is the right hand of god is just a awsome scene! he plays that very well!
The irony is that Brian Cox played King Henry II (John's father) in a tv series in the 70s. Hearing him coursing at John sounds almost like a "charming" father-son moment XD
