A bit late, but he uses strings to pull the equipment off and plays the footage in reverse to create the effect of objects flying toward him.

It's done with stop motion. He's simply taking a picture of the shoe, moving the lace slightly, then taking another picture and repeating the process multiple times to create the illusion of motion.
